Creighton OTD in Belize with Therapy Volunteers

My experience in Belize with Therapy Volunteers as a Creighton OTD student was truly unforgettable. This trip was an incredible opportunity to learn what occupational therapy looks like in a different cultural and with limited resources in mixed settings, while also serving the local community. During the week, we spent time in a pediatric outpatient clinic and special education school where we were able to observe and facilitate therapy sessions, collaborate with teachers and caregivers, and build connections with the children we worked with. Level 1 OTD students typically do not get to run therapy sessions so this was an especially meaningful way to give back to a community in need of providers! It was inspiring to see how therapists creatively adapted activities and interventions with limited resources to help children participate in meaningful occupations.

Therapy Volunteers did a wonderful job organizing the excursion experiences and making sure everything ran smoothly. From transportation and meals to coordinating clinic days and cultural activities, the staff were supportive, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable about Belizean culture. There was even a cultural presentation that we attended to better understand the culture in Belize. In addition to the clinical learning opportunities, we also had the chance to explore the country through amazing excursions like cave tubing and ziplining through the jungle and spending a day at Caye Caulker snorkeling with SHARKS! These experiences allowed us to bond as a group while also gaining a deeper appreciation for the beauty and culture of Belize. Overall, this trip helped me get in touch with my passion for culture through occupational therapy practices and reminded me how meaningful it is to use our skills to support others across different communities.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My favorite moment from this trip was swimming with nurse sharks and sting rays while snorkeling. The tour guide said, "What are you waiting for? They won't stick around long, get in." I am terrified of sharks but decided to listen to a bit of encouragement I often extend to clients, "You are so brave." and I dove in! It was an unforgettable experience and I will cherish this memory for the entirety of my life.
Pros
  • Delicious food
  • Rich cultural experience
  • Unforgettable excursions

Therapy Volunteers Inc & Creighton OT to Belize!

When I was presented with the opportunity to provide occupational therapy services in another country, I immediately said yes! Therapy Volunteers provided a culturally-rich, holistic, and safe experience that was very beneficial to my learning and future career as an occupational therapist. We spent time at a local clinic and special education school to learn more about the needs of those with disabilities and how important our services are! Therapy Volunteers also provided two excursion days during our time in Belize - cave tubing/ziplining & an adventure to Caye Caulker! We were met with amazing and welcoming staff who allowed us to have an inside look on the culture of Belize.

What was your funniest moment?
The people of Belize love their puns! It was always a treat to see how they would incorporate Belize into jokes or conversations. My favorite was "You better BELIZE it!"
Pros
  • Reliable transportation
  • Amazing food
  • Culturally-rich experiences

Ideal First "Abroad" Experience for Students

With this experience, Therapy Volunteers International creates a structure to take you through so many pieces of an abroad learning trip. TVI coordinates cultural immersion experiences (like visits to the Belizean Zoo and going to local Belizean restaurants), touristy excursions that allow you to see the sights (cave tubing, ziplining, Caye days), and on-the-ground service-based experiences working in pediatric therapy settings. It's such a well-rounded experience, both from a travel perspective and from a student therapy fieldwork perspective. Highly rec as a level I FW experience!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be flexible, open, and inquisitive! Belize is such a beautiful country with a beautiful culture, and keeping yourself open to learning about and experiencing the culture when traveling anywhere is so important.

A Truly Meaningful and Blessed Experience in Belize

My experience in Belize was truly incredible, and I am so thankful and grateful for the opportunity to be part of it. This trip was such a meaningful learning experience, and I feel truly blessed to have had the chance to learn from the people and children of Belize. Their kindness, joy, and resilience made such a lasting impact on me.

Throughout the week, I had the opportunity to observe and participate in therapy sessions, collaborate with teachers and caregivers, and see how occupational therapy can be provided in a different cultural and resource setting. It was inspiring to watch the therapists use creativity and adaptability to support each child. Even with limited materials, they found thoughtful ways to meet each child where they were and help them succeed.

What stood out to me most was the heart behind the work being done. The care and dedication shown to the children and families was so evident in every interaction. I learned so much not only about occupational therapy, but also about compassion, patience, and the importance of simply being present with the people in front of you.

I am incredibly grateful for this experience and for the opportunity to learn from such amazing clinicians, teachers, and families. This trip strengthened my passion for occupational therapy and reminded me how meaningful this profession truly is. I will carry what I learned in Belize with me for the rest of my career.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers would be to go into the experience with an open mind and be willing to learn from everyone around you. Things will likely look different than what you are used to in the U.S., especially when it comes to resources and how services are delivered, but that is part of what makes the experience so meaningful. Be ready to be flexible and creative, and just be present with the children and families you are serving. I would also encourage you to really take time to learn from the people there. The clinicians, teachers, and families have so much wisdom to share, and the children will teach you more than you expect! Some of the most meaningful moments come from simply being present, building relationships, and paying attention to the small things. Most importantly, soak it all in. The week goes by quickly, and it is such a special opportunity both personally and professionally. Go in with gratitude and a willingness to serve, and you will gain so much from the experience!
Pros
  • Meaningful hands-on experience working with children and families
  • Learning how to be creative and adaptable with limited resources
  • Building relationships and learning from the people and culture of Belize

Student Review

My time in Belize as an OTD student with Therapy Volunteers International was an incredible learning experience. The team was very welcoming and accommodating, creating a supportive environment that allowed me to grow both clinically and personally. As a student, I appreciated how they encouraged hands-on learning while also providing guidance and mentorship throughout the experience. It was a unique opportunity to apply my skills in a new cultural setting, and I am grateful for the support and flexibility they showed in helping students make the most of the trip.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising part of my trip to Belize with Therapy Volunteers International was how quickly we were able to connect with the local community and see the impact of occupational therapy firsthand. Despite working with limited resources, we were still able to create meaningful interventions and support our clients in ways that truly made a difference. It was inspiring to see how adaptable and creative therapy can be, and it reinforced how powerful compassionate, client-centered care can be in any setting.

Belize SLP

My week in Belize was an incredible and meaningful experience. Volunteering at Stella Maris Special Education School and the clinic allowed me to use my speech therapy skills, build real relationships, and learn so much from the students and staff. I only wish I had more time there. one week wasn’t enough.
I think the program could benefit from more donation opportunities, such as AAC devices, games, activities, and school supplies to support both clinicians and families including parent resources. More reliable WiFi at the Tropical Education Center would also help future volunteers.
Outside of work, snorkeling at Caye Caulker and cave tubing were unforgettable. Adding an extra day or even a night on one of the islands would make the experience even better. Overall, my time in Belize was genuinely rewarding, and I hope to go back for a longer stay.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
For future travelers, I’d recommend staying longer if possible because one week goes by quickly. Bring extra therapy materials or school supplies; anything from AAC tools to simple games can make a big impact and even resources on AAC/autism for parents. Be flexible, as resources are limited, and expect spotty WiFi at the Tropical Education Center. Prepare a few activities ahead of time, pack for heat and bugs, and take advantage of the chance to explore snorkeling, cave tubing. Overall, go in with an open mind and be ready to build meaningful relationships.
Pros
  • Meaningful hands-on experience working with kids in a school and clinic setting
  • Chance to grow professionally and personally in a resource-limited setting
  • Opportunity to use AAC devices, core boards, and real therapy skills
Cons
  • One week feels too short
  • Few structured options for donating needed supplies or devices

Occupational Therapy Student Level 1 Fieldwork

In Nov. of 2025, I had the opportunity to go to Belize for my level 1 fieldwork rotation. I can not express enough positivity about this experience. It was the most hands on experience I have had so far. Our fieldwork instructor was amazing, she provided great feedback during and after our session and was very supportive. Therapy volunteers also gave us the opportunity to experience things such as snorkeling, zip lining, and cave tubing. This was amazing and I would recommend this trip to anyone!

Learning, Serving, and Growing in Belize

Our group’s experience in Belize was nothing short of incredible. From the moment we arrived, the staff welcomed us with genuine warmth and hospitality, making us feel immediately at home. Their friendliness and support helped our group of students feel comfortable and confident as we engaged in a variety of meaningful learning and service opportunities.

We were grateful for the chance to immerse ourselves in the local culture and community. The cultural experiences provided deep insight into Belizean traditions, daily life, and values—offering our students a global perspective that will continue to shape their professional and personal growth.

During our time there, we worked with children through evaluations, individual sessions, and a mini camp. The enthusiasm and engagement of the children made every interaction incredibly rewarding. It was inspiring to witness the positive impact our students were able to make through occupational therapy–based activities and play.

The facilities and space available were ideal for our group’s needs, allowing us to carry out each component of our program with ease and creativity.

Each community contributed its own unique traditions, language, and perspectives, creating a vibrant and welcoming cultural mosaic. Witnessing how these diverse groups coexist and celebrate their heritage was both enlightening and inspiring, and it deepened my appreciation for the country’s inclusive and community-oriented spirit.
