Belize Fieldwork 2026

Going to Belize for my Level 1B fieldwork was such an amazing opportunity. The work experience was incredible, and I gained so much knowledge working with all of the kids. Amrita, Maya, and Naomi are awesome and were always willing to help and give additional information. We went on 3 excursions while we were there, all of which were so much fun. We had the best tour guides filling us in on Belize's history while keeping us entertained. I will always remember my experience here and will carry what I learned to future workplaces. I am so grateful for this experience!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Do not be afraid to jump right in! Everyone involved in our experience was very kind and always willing to help/ answer any questions. A few of us did have some bugs in our rooms, but I think that's to be expected when staying in the jungle. That being said, I would also suggest bringing lots of bug spray and itch cream!
Pros
  • Great learning experience
  • Supportive staff
  • Amazing excursions
Cons
  • Bugs
  • Limited wifi

Great experience

My Level I fieldwork experience in Belize was an incredibly meaningful and eye-opening opportunity that expanded both my clinical understanding and cultural awareness. Unlike many Level I placements where observation is the primary role, this experience allowed me to actively participate in therapy sessions rather than simply being a “fly on the wall.” Being involved in the therapeutic process helped me build confidence in my clinical reasoning skills and better understand how occupational therapy is applied in real-world settings.

Throughout the experience, I had the privilege of collaborating daily with an OTR/L as well as a speech-language pathologist (SLP). This interprofessional collaboration was one of the most valuable aspects of the fieldwork. Observing and contributing to treatment planning, as well as seeing how different disciplines work together to support client outcomes, gave me a deeper appreciation for a holistic, team-based approach to care. It reinforced the importance of communication, flexibility, and mutual respect among healthcare professionals.

Being in Belize provided a unique opportunity to engage with cultural diversity in a way that cannot be replicated in a classroom setting. I was able to observe how cultural values, resources, and community contexts influence both access to care and therapeutic interventions. This experience challenged me to think critically about adapting interventions to be culturally relevant and meaningful for each client. It also highlighted the importance of being culturally sensitive and open-minded as a future practitioner.

The hands-on nature of this placement, combined with the cultural immersion, made it a truly impactful learning experience. I developed a greater sense of independence, improved my communication skills, and gained a better understanding of client-centered care in diverse environments. Overall, my Level I fieldwork in Belize not only strengthened my foundational skills in occupational therapy but also deepened my commitment to providing inclusive, culturally competent care. I am grateful for the opportunity and will carry these lessons forward into my future practice.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
You can never have too much bug spray. And don't be afraid to jump and immerse yourself in the cultural experience. Feel silly, observe, participate and have fun.
Pros
  • Tourist friendly
  • all inclusive
  • felt safe all week

Missouri State University Occupational Therapy_Review

It was an incredibly rewarding experience to learn about and engage with Belizean culture firsthand. I especially valued the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with children in the clinic, which was both meaningful and enriching. The supervising therapists were highly knowledgeable and provided insightful, constructive feedback that greatly enhanced my learning. I would definitely participate in this experience again and am very interested in continuing my involvement with the organization.

Abroad in Belize

I had the most amazing experience with Therapy Volunteers International in Belize! The place we stayed was very comfortable and the food was phenomenal and authentic. I felt safe at all times and there were many resources to ask if I needed anything. It was amazing to be immersed in and exposed to the culture and learn more about the people and the area. The clinical experience was incredible and very beneficial for my learning. Bring lots of bug spray and sunscreen! Especially if you go on a snorkeling excursion! Made so many memories!

Definitely bring a lot of bug spray for mosquitos and sunscreen. The bugs did not take away from this amazing experience though!

Missouri State Occupational Therapy Review

My experience with Therapy Volunteers in Belize was unforgettable and played a huge role in shaping my growth as a future occupational therapist. I felt welcomed, supported, and inspired by the incredible team and the meaningful work being done within the community.

One of the most impactful aspects of the program was the opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in a real-world setting. Working directly with individuals in need of therapeutic services allowed me to deepen my understanding of occupational therapy beyond the classroom. I was able to observe and participate in a variety of interventions, adapt activities based on client needs, and develop a greater appreciation for culturally responsive care.

Amrita and Maya demonstrated passion, knowledge, and dedication throughout our time in Belize. They created a space where I felt comfortable asking questions, seeking guidance, and stepping outside of my comfort zone.

Immersing myself in a new culture, connecting with the local community, and gaining a broader perspective on global healthcare were all invaluable parts of this journey.

Overall, my time with Therapy Volunteers in Belize exceeded my expectations in every way. It is truly an experience I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Well-rounded International Experience

My experience in Belize with Therapy Volunteers was truly unforgettable! As an occupational therapy student, I gained valuable, hands-on, and culturally rich clinical experiences working with the people and children in Belize. The time we spent at a local clinic and special education school getting to know the children and learning more about their disabilities and how occupational therapy services can support them was very beneficial to my future career. I left feeling inspired by the creativity, resilience, and adaptability of the therapists who all demonstrated a deep level of respect and appreciation for the cultural differences.

In addition to gaining clinical hours, we went on a variety of excursions throughout the week including snorkeling, cave tubing, ziplining, and a visit to the Belize zoo. Snorkeling was the highlight, but all were unforgettable experiences! These excursions gave me an opportunity to explore and enjoy Belize, and definitely fulfilled my adventurous spirit. Therapy Volunteers ensures that your time in Belize is well spent, with the perfect balance of clinical opportunities and fun!

Definitely consider trying your profession somewhere new!

I loved my time in Belize. While it was a short week filled with clinic and school work, we were also able to see Belize through snorkeling and touring the Mayan ruins. The adventure days were so much fun, but I will forever remember all the kids from clinic and the school. The progress they made in such a short time was memorable. I would definitely recommend if you want a fun and new way to experience our profession of speech! Working at the school was such a neat experience because you were able to work with kids who were trying to work on different areas than most kids you see in the states also. It is also a great way to work on your personal quick thinking for sessions.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Do a little research on the culture before coming. Nothing extensive, just a little.
Pros
  • Learning experience
  • Group bonding
  • Sweet kids
Cons
  • Bugs
  • Not much night life
