About Program

Despite having a relatively strong primary health care system, Costa Rica still has many challenges to address. This is where we first started back in 2008 and since then, we have served thousands of people and animals.

We currently intervene through three main fields of work: Medical, Dental and Veterinary, which are designed to promote health, ensuring a long-lasting impact while students develop both intercultural & leadership skills in a real-world context.

Vida offers a unique positive learning environment that will completely change your perspective on the idea of serving others. Students will have a chance to work with local licensed professionals while providing services to the communities we have partnered with.

Vida Costa Rica 2020

This program, at first, didn’t seem credible. However, it was a safe, informative, extremely exciting trip that I wish could have gone on for a few more days. You become so close with the people you work with, and in the other fields. It feels as if they have become really close friends and we have known each other for years. The medical knowledge I gained will be essential in my future career. The doctors, from all fields, were very knowledgeable and helpful when it came to learning more. They always took time to answer questions and gave it a 100%.

What would you improve about this program?
On orientation day, I would focus more on taking vitals for medical students. It was a bit nerve wracking only practicing it for a few minutes.

Medical Program Review

This trip was a great experience. All of the doctors were so knowledgeable and willing to teach you whatever they could. The community was also so generous and willing to open their homes to us. The staff also made the trip just as wonderful by coordinating all the events and schedule and the translators did a fantastic job interpreting for us! The schedule was very flexible and we were able to see so much. The food was always very delicious! Also, I’m glad I was able to meet so many people from different places!

What would you improve about this program?
I feel like the trip could have been condensed a little more than it was to save money. I think the students should be required to read learn most of the information before they come and once they are here to refresh that information.

Thank you to vida staff!

The vida staff make the experience as amazing as it is. You will be challenged, tired and have a lot of questions, but Pablo, our team leader, and all of the veterinarians were always there for us and I would go back in a heartbeat. They helped showcase to us the beauty of Costa Rica. The first day did feel like it would be a little overwhelming during orientation, but they explained everything very well. I appreciated getting to watch the whole process from intake to recovery before we had to do it ourselves. There was always a staff member close by to answer any questions we had, and I really liked the ratio of vets to students.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
If you know a little Spanish, brush up on it so you can confidently talk to locals!

The Trip that Keeps on Giving

I went on this same trip last year and thought it could not be topped. The memories we made and the staff we worked with last year were amazing, but this year they were even better. All of the intake staff (Dra. Ericka, Dra. Carolina, and Dra. Alejandra) were so patient with us and made us feel like there was no dumb question to ask. Even if they were frustrated or stressed, we could not tell because they always wore and smile and a positive attitude. The doctors were very informative and walked us through surgery step by step and answered any questions we had gladly. Dra. Jealiany especially was a trooper throughout our last clinic day. She pushed through the heat, the flu, a spay with a pregnant dog, and two emergencies and still managed to smile afterwards. Vida continually amazes me with the organization of the clinic days and the clinic staff you guys send us with on these trips.

What would you improve about this program?
I wish I would have gotten the opportunity to work with each one of the doctors we had on this trip. I did not get to work with doctor Paula or Doctor Medrano at all throughout the trip and I would love to establish relationships with all of them. I know we work with whichever doctor is available but if we could request who our first doctor would be each day, that would be amazing. Also, I know that the surgery assistant is always assigned but I would love it if the anesthesiologist was assigned to each group as well so it wouldn’t leave people confused as to what their role is in placing catheters or ET tubes. That way we would have equal opportunity to place a catheter, ET tube, and monitor vitals.

Incredible, eyeopening experience

This program and this trip was absolutely amazing and I have nothing but positive things to say about it. I learned more than I even knew I could in such a short period of time. The staff is so patient, compassionate, understanding, enthusiastic, fun, and helpful and I love them all so much. The way that the clinic days were introduced, taught, and done were great. I really loved the recreation days also. I got more out of this trip than I could have imagined and I’ve never been more sure that this is the career I want.

What would you improve about this program?
The large animal day was a little slow and there was a lot of waiting around but that also means more time to bond so there’s still a positive side to that :)

Veterinary

This trip was a lot of fun. I made some great new friends that I had some fun times with and went on adventures with. I met a lot of people that I enjoyed my time with everyone in the group. The support was nice and the rooms were nice. The home stay was an amazing experience for me because it taught me to be thankful for everything I have back at my home and to not take anything for granted. This was definetly a great experience. They had very nice beaches and amazing weather to enjoy. We went banana boating and tubing and many other sorts of activities that I. Can’t think of right now but they were all a amazing and I would do them all again one hundred percent! I am also so happy I learned so much about veterinary medicine and all the experience I got with the animals.

What would you improve about this program?
I would like to have more supportive leaders because sometimes I felt like they were not helpful

Unforgettable Experience

Definitely a trip to remember. Going into this trip I didn’t really know wht to expect in terms of how much we were really able to do (in terms of hands-on in surgery) and homestays. All the vets were very helpful in explaining and being patient with us. Homestays were an amazing experience as well as we got a chance to experience the culture first hand. This allowed us to actually appreciate what we have back home and be more grateful for all that we have. Being in such a large group allowed for us all to experience all types of people with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Even if people did not have much experience in this field of work, everyone was patient and willing to help and teach. I am definitely very grateful to have had this experience and to be able to work along side such amazing vets and peers.

What would you improve about this program?
I would want this program to improve in its organization and scheduling.

Excellent learning experience

During this trip I have not only learned many new skills about veterinary medicine but I have also felt a great level of accomplishment and what it feels like to make a difference in local communities who need it. After clinic days, i went home feeling incredibly proud of what I had done that day. The staff members are incredibly nice and will go out of their way to help you always. I have also had the opportunity to learn spanish and make toms of new friends including my homestay family who were extremely welcoming. I loved the recreational days as they allowed us to see the beauty of the country (horseback riding, beaches, hot springs). I would definitely say that this trip has changed me for the better and i am going home feeling like i have made a small difference in the world.

What would you improve about this program?
I think that orientation day should have been more thorough as there are many things i did not know how to do on the first few days of clinic, however the vets were super helpful and answered questions politely when asked, so that is a bonus. However it would have made the first day of clinic much less hectic for both vets and students
