working in nature

The aim of the project is to preserve the local Kichwa culture and the local environment of a region close to the national park of Llanganates on the route Puyo-Tena. The project aims to preserve the latter by enlightening the local community about the environment and initiating projects on ecotourism, community, and adventure tourism. The project is also aiming to construct a site for educational courses.

volunteers on the farm

It has been operating as an off-grid intentional community and organic farm since 2008. We have been recognized across South America as a hub for permaculture practice and skill-building. It began with a vision of transforming a run-down farmhouse and 15 hectares (38-acres) of over-exploited farmland into a world apart from mainstream culture—a place where people could grow, heal, live sustainably, and regenerate the land while also living in the community.

sea turtle care in Puerto López

Research and conservation of sea turtles and marine ecosystems in Ecuador. The projects are based on research for conservation. We have been working with sea turtles since 2007. They also monitor the artisanal shark fisheries, identifying and measuring sharks and rays in order to monitor their status in the area.

volunteering with rescued animals

One of the strengths of the project is that the team is made of a mix of traditional knowledge from local people and new people from all over the world. Working in a botanical garden

When you want to volunteer and you are looking for an organization VASE is a great choice. During my voluntary service with VASE I felt supported and safe every time.
The experience in my project was overall very good. I really enjoyed working outside and taking care of the plants from the seed to the tree. My tasks changed from day to day, but mainly I worked in the maintenance of them park, help in the reforestation, give tours in the park and do administrative work in the seed bank.
The only thing that bothers me about my project is, that the volunteers were expacted to work overtime and my bosses were very picky about breaks during the day.

Pros
  • Learn a lot about the plants and the animals of the Amazon
  • Mostly working outside
  • Varied tasks
Cons
  • During the rainy season lack of variety

personal experience

Personally I can recommend the organization VASE. For all people that search for support during their stay in Ecuador, it’s a good choice. I’m happy with the work they are doing. I felt very safe and got good advice. Also the seminars were good, just sometimes not perfectly organized. But the preparation and the topic we talked about were really good for getting into a new environment and culture. They are trying to create a network, so volunteers in the whole country can get easily in contact with each other. Also when I had questions they answered me very fast.
