About Program

Schools in Ghana are poorly equipped with Physical Education teachers due to budget cutbacks. Government-funded schools no longer offer this subject because they cannot afford to pay a sports teacher out of their own small budget. For this reason, volunteers are very necessary to these schools as they can provide Physical Education lessons without the extra costs.

As a volunteer, you don’t need previous coaching experience, but you will need a real passion for sports and the drive and initiative to lead a sports session with students in one of the most populated colleges in the country, without always having the backup of another teacher. Volunteers will often coach together and have the full support of the teaching staff, though both human and material resources are in short supply.
Don’t worry if you don’t have UEFA–grade soccer coaching skills or aren’t an Olympic athlete – simply organizing a game of soccer.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.
