About Program

Encounter Local has established relationships with existing social and community projects, in facilitating teaching and child care to both the fortunate as well less fortunate in the community. At this time our program is situated at Mukuru slums and its surroundings in Nairobi, Kenya. We work with relatively small pre school and primary schools, with children ranging from 3 years to 12 years. As a volunteer, you will find that most of the schools have insufficient, ill-equiped facilities and under staffed. However you will notice an abundance of joy / happiness in these children, and hence for the volunteer as much there is a great need to contribute and make a meaningful impact of which is highly appreciated, you as well learn and gain from the experience.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.

Teaching and Vulnerable Children Project

The experience was definitely worth. EL organisers went to a far extent to made us feel welcome and secure. Also the accommodation in the local family was a very pleasant experience.

I honestly never had so much contradicting feelings in my entire life in such a small amount of time. I felt joy to be able to bring some happiness to the children just by sharing my culture or some sweets. I felt sadness for the conditions in which most of them live. I felt anger in seeing people throwing trash everywhere and not respect their own environment. I felt hope in being told and seeing how things are evolving and progressing with respect to some years ago. I think these programs are very important to raise awareness for both sides, locals and volunteers.

Might be trivial to say but I really understood how privileged I was growing up with my education and school system as well as my health system. Never taking for granted what we have!

Strongly recommended to anyone who wants to make such an experience. A bit of adaption skills and open minded are needed.

What would you improve about this program?
Our travel was perfectly organized, in my opinion. However, we were mixing volunteering program with vacations/relax. For a full volunteering program, I feel a better use of time and resources might be needed.
