About Program

Fuze Ecoteer runs three marine conservation projects on the paradise Perhentian Islands in Peninsular Malaysia.

Perhentian Eco Education Project
This project is the KEY for all our projects. Here you lead weekly school clubs and annual camps for the children aged 6 to 12 years old. You job is to teach and inspire the future generations. We run kayak patrols, coral watch and precious plastic recycling sessions with the students as we believe in class without walls. You will also get involve with our villager run recycling programme, its still very small and humble but we hope we can do more.

Perhentian Turtle Project
We are based at two locations. Tiga our turtles nesting beach and the village where we do photo ID of foraging turtles. This project is different with other turtle projects as you will get involved with the villagers.

Perhentian Marine Research Project
Learn to scuba dive and survey the seagrass and coral reefs of Perhentian. You will learn so much!

Video and Photos

Impact

Ethical Impact

We have seen an increasing number of sea turtle nests at the beaches in Perhentian from 2008 when just 254 nests to 554 in 2023. We have trained over 20 villagers in scuba and conservation skills and they now join us on a daily rate wage to help remove ghost nets and other conservation actions. We have raised in just 2023 over RM100,000 for the local community at Lembah Subang Low Cost housing area.

Program Highlights

  • Dive on coral reefs collecting vital data
  • Enjoy afternoon snorkel surveys while taking photo ID of sea turtles
  • Teach the local kids and help with recycling programmes.
  • Night patrols under the stars and moon to protect mother turtles who come to lay their eggs
  • Spend your day off lounging on Malaysia’s most beautiful beaches

Popular Programs

Program Perhentian Island Turtle Project

Volunteer for sea turtles on Malaysia’s Perhentian islands. Help us protect Green sea turtle nesting sites, as well as tracking their movements with snorkel surveys whilst soaking up the beautiful scenery and culture the Perhentians have to offer.

Perhentian Marine Research Station

The Perhentian Marine Research Station is a small scale research station which focuses on the practical aspects of marine research and conservation. This means that PMRS can accommodate a wide range of volunteers who undergo training in marine life identification and underwater survey techniques, before the acquisition of survey data.

Perhentian Eco Education Project

The Perhentian Eco-Education Project is a unique project based on Perhentian islands. The aim of the project is to spread environmental awareness among the village children and locals while also improving their English and also to tourists.

Turtle conservation Perhentian Islands

We volunteered on the Perhentian Islands through Ecoteer at Bubbles Dive Centre for 2 weeks. We had a fantastic time and learnt so a lot about the turtles and threats they face. Our day would consist of working in the hatchery and we would work rotating night shift to patrol the beaches. We also assisted with some high school groups from the UK to teach them and involve them in activities.

We got to experience turtles laying eggs, watching for poachers and assisting with tourists who were also on the island who wished to see turtles lay eggs. Releasing the baby turtles was a real highlight. The team on the island are very passionate about their work and what they are trying to achieve.

The accommodation was good and we were comfortable. There were opportunities to go snorkeling and diving as work permitted and we felt part of the team on the island.

Would recommend it to anyone interested in turtle conservation.

What would you improve about this program?
I felt the project was great. Perhaps the only thing that could be changed/improved would the facilities for down time. Maybe a lounge type area/communal area, place to read etc. That would be my only suggestion.

Perhentian

We had a great time at the perhentian islands! And where very sad to leave after two weeks. The people from the island are amazing, so friendly and the children are so engaged in learning from the volunteers. The programme is so diverse from mural painting to snorkel trips, teaching Eco tourism and gardening. As well as educating the village people and sharing your skills to improve lives, and also educate yourself in various fun lessons such as making donuts (an eating them) with the PiLA ladies and becoming involved in there lives. The island is beautiful; so after teaching children who almost become friends, everybody can go together to the jetty to make the famous 'jetty jump'. Volunteering at the perhentian islands really was a special experience. To bond with the local people, having dinner in family homes and to share education about cultures and the environment. You become enriched. As well as the island people we made very good friends with the staff and other volunteers and enjoyed havin BBQs at the beach on an evening. The perhentian village really was a wonderful experience and we hope to return !

Good dives, good people & good moments

I joined this project for one week and this was a great experience for me!!

This project is managed by Neil & Sabina, a couple of diving instructors, in their early ies, very friendly, whole-hearted and fond of diving.

Neil managed to get some funds to start a research project on the diving sites of the Perhentian Islands. These sites are among the best ones in Malaysia where it is usual to watch sharks, turtles, baraccudas, morey eels etc etc.

With the help of Ecoteer, they could get a house in the beautiful muslim village of the small island. That's where I slept with the other diving volunteer.
The day time is shared between diving, eating (lunch at the restaurant, diner at the house or out), resting and doing some activities organised by Ecoteer staff.

Ecoteer is involved in another volunteering project which mainly aimts at teaching some English to the women & children of the village. Part of the activities are shared together wiht the volunteers of both projects: English lesson given to the woman & children, jetty jumping (yeahh), cooking lesson given by the woman of the village, traditional diner at the house of a local village, Malaysian BBQ diner, Malaysian language class etc etc ...

The local people know Ecoteer folks and are very friendly with all the volunteers. The house of Ecoteer are always surrounded with the local kids... very wild and very fun. I had such a great time that I was closed from cancelling the rest of my trip to stay a bit longer!!!

Great week on perhentian

I was very happy during my time on perhentian. The ecoteer staff was really friendly, supportive and believed in what they were doing. They try to give as much background information on the social situation of the locals, and helped us to get in touch with them so that afterwards we could understand their values and culture better. This is something that a normal tourist could not get. Other than that we were accommodated in an authentic malay wooden house, which I really enjoyed!

I can recommend this program to everybody who is looking for a volunteering activity with cultural elements and a picturesque setting.

Great diving fun for important marine research

The Perhentian Islands research project is great for those people who love diving/marine conservation and want to to do in a fun, relaxed environment. Fantastic place to learn to dive also (The lead resarchers/instructers are amazing!) Village life is easy going, the locals are friendly and you also have easy access to the resorts to party on days off or relax on the beach.

Come check it out!

The experience has given me some unforgettable memories and have made some great friends.

From the start of the adventure, everybody was very welcoming, the trip was laid out to us so we knew what to expect. The first few days were difficult adjusting to the heat and the time difference so it was nice to take it easy and there was just enough time for me to fully adjust to changes before starting the trek.

All activities eg. the flying fox, badminton etc were great fun and allowed us to gel into the group. Sri was excellent with translating and could answer all of our questions. Although sometimes tricky eating new food, the opportunities and variety of food we were given was amazing. My favourite part of the adventure was visiting the Orang Asli, as it was so interesting and great to experience a completely different way of life. Teaching the children was amazing but would have been nice to perhaps do it over two days as the children were slightly shy to begin with.

Overall, the experience has given me some unforgettable memories and have made some great friends. Would love to come back and visit again.

What would you improve about this program?
Timing was sometimes delayed which caused us to miss out on some activities.

Its a real life changer and really makes me appreciate everything a lot more

My experience volunteering was one of the most amazing experiences in my life. It's a real life changer and really makes me appreciate everything a lot more. The Orang Asli has really taught me that it's not always the nice things in life but family and friends and helping the community that can get you by in life and enjoying every moment.

The Ecoteer team were amazing and I have made so many more friends but the worse part was saying good bye.

The Mount Korbu Trek has really made me push myself and my limits which I would like to say a thank you .

What would you improve about this program?
Sometimes the timing is out, for example we took longer for some activities than expected so we couldn't do others.

Sri Is so enthusiastic you can't help get caught up in it with him

I've enjoyed every second of the last week and all the people I have met and been with, it has been like being part of a family. As well as enjoying it, I feel like I have learnt so much about the forest, the local community and Malaysia in general.

Sri is so enthusiastic about what he is dong you can't help but get caught up in it with him. The fact that you feel like you can see where your money has gone and that Ecoteer cares about having a positive impact on the local community and everyone who is involved in the project is another really important part for me. I fell like I have got so much out of doing this and would not hesitate for a second to recommend it to others.

What would you improve about this program?
Really enjoyed doing the lesson plan & the lesson also was fun to do but I guess it doesn’t seem like you are going to make much of a difference with just a few hours.
