Best week in Lanzarote

My experience with WeWhale was great! The only thing that I would recommend is to spend (if possible) more than one week with them. I stayed for one week and learnt everything I could but I would have loved to stay more to experience the program in depth. Staying in Lanzarote was amazing for me and Gonzalo and Silvia were friendly, nice and helpful. The house provided by Wewhale was very big, I had my private room and also a swimming pool outside! The island is stunning and I had the time to explore it with the others volunteers. Learning about cetaceans was one of my dreams and WeWhale made it possible!

What was your funniest moment?
I really enjoyed going to SECAC to learn about cetaceans and help the researchers

Volunteering with WeWhale in Lanzarote

I had a great time in Lanzarote. Gonzalo and Juanito of the WeWhale catamaran were really helpful. Luckily, the weather was nice—not too windy—and we took lots of trips out on the water. I enjoyed spending time with the tourists and talking about my love for whales.

I learned a lot about the dolphins and whales and what is involved with working on the catamaran. I saw three types of dolphins, unfortunately, no whales. The house was close to the shops and the beach. Overall a great experience 😊🙏

Lots of practical and informative tips from Adriana.

Unforgettable experience!

I had a fantastic time with WeWhale in Lanzarote. Not only was I lucky enough to encounter different types of cetaceans and tell guests on the Santa Maria about them and how we can protect them. I also got to connect and build friendships with other participants and staff and learn so much about the ocean and the animals. Lanzarote is a beautiful place that has lots to offer for your free time: hiking, surfing, diving and different excursions. All in all a valuable experience I‘m super grateful for!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
All sorts of animals: different types of dolphins, beaked whales, a baleen whale, sea turtle and birds!
Pros
  • Beautiful wildlife encounters
  • Educating people
  • Lots to do in your free time
Cons
  • Similar routines and activities every day

A Rewarding and Eye-Opening Marine Conservation Experience

My experience with this program was truly unforgettable. From observing cetaceans up close to learning about marine ecosystems and conservation efforts, every moment was incredibly rewarding. The Santa Maria became my home on the water, swaying with the waves, and I cherished every opportunity to work in the stunning Lanzarote surroundings. The apartment was also well-located near Puerto del Carmen, making everything convenient.

The program is perfect for those passionate about marine life and conservation. I learned so much—not only about cetaceans and marine biology but also about sailing, teamwork, and the importance of sharing messages of sustainability with others.

The team members, Gonzalo and Silvia, were absolutely incredible—kind, helpful, and always willing to teach, explain, and share their knowledge. They made time for us and even engaged in activities outside of excursions, which made the experience even more special.

However, it’s important to emphasize that this program is not for people looking for a guided vacation or expecting to be coddled. The team members are there to guide, teach, and share their expertise, but they are not babysitters. You’re expected to be motivated, proactive, and willing to contribute.

If you’re genuinely interested in learning, helping out, and working toward the protection of marine ecosystems, this program will exceed your expectations. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will stay with you forever!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be prepared to actively participate and contribute during your time in the program. This is not a guided vacation but a hands-on experience where your involvement makes a real difference. Show initiative, be ready to help with tasks on and off the boat, and embrace the learning opportunities. Also, come with a genuine interest in marine conservation and respect for the animals and ecosystems—you’ll get the most out of the experience that way. And don’t forget practical essentials like sunscreen, a hat, and motion sickness pills if you’re prone to seasickness!
Pros
  • The closeness to the animals and the stunning ocean—it’s an incredible, unforgettable feeling.
  • Working with a motivated and amazing team like Gonzalo and Silvia, who are truly inspiring.
  • Engaging with tourists, having interesting conversations, and sharing knowledge.
Cons
  • Excursions can sometimes get canceled due to bad weather, leaving you with unexpected free time.
  • You will be stuck with Gonzalo’s jokes 😂 (don’t worry he can be funny from time to time)
  • Actually no more cons
