About Program

Assist with helping endangered elephants and local communities live together in harmony. You will be working with an award winning charity whose local scientists and conservationists conduct research to help monitor these incredible creatures that you will have the privilege of observing in the wild.

Each day you will be out witnessing elephants in their natural habitats and helping to protect their livelihood for future generations to enjoy. You will monitor elephants, trek through jungle following grazing trails, identify and photograph, observe from tree top platforms and carry out mammal and bird surveys.

In additional to this you will help in schools to teach environmental awareness to the future guardians of the elephants. You will also help local people improve their personal conditions to live alongside the elephants.

Accommodation is in a stunning location in the central forests of Sri Lanka. Breathtaking views overlook mountains close to Wasgamuwa National Park.

Impact

Sustainability

Oyster Worldwide is passionate about the importance of responsible travel. We want our projects to fit in with the local way of life, without having a negative impact on the environment, culture or economy. This means that we will only send participants to places where there is a real need and where we have been asked to work. Once there, they should fit in with the community, respecting their way of life and supporting, rather than taking, local jobs.

Sun bears are the world’s smallest species of bear, and their cuteness is putting them under threat. As babies they are illegally taken from the wild to be sold as pets, forced to live in tiny unnatural enclosures. You can help to give these bears a life they deserve in the stunning Bornean jungle.

Baby Orangutan

Live in a small remnant of paradise, helping to protect and regenerate Borneo’s rainforest and its inhabitants. Spot orangutans in the trees as you monitor the area’s wildlife from a boat, and hear the pygmy elephants calling from the jungle at night.

Baby Namibian elephant

Help local communities make a difference, on an important mission to unite people and elephants living in southern Africa’s vast and beautiful Namib desert. Immerse yourself in desert life – cooking over camp fires and sleeping under the stars – and have the privilege of seeing desert elephants in the wild.

New Zealand lake landscape

Whether you are a student, professional or a retiree, anyone is welcome to make a genuine difference and contribute to protecting some of the most beautiful and remote islands in the world.
