About Program

Join the pre- and primary school with inclusive education for children with special needs. This is a private school, which means that all the subjects are taught in English. Inclusive Education means that it includes children with special needs such as autism, ADHD, and others.

You will assist the teachers during class, especially for the children with special needs. If you prefer to assist at the preschool, you can prepare some handicraft lessons or play with the children. Sometimes the children with special needs need some extra time for a task, as it is not easy for them to follow the normal class, as it might be too fast or they can't concentrate for so long. Here is where you can assist them with what they need. Maybe a little break, maybe just someone to assist them with some things. Every Friday is a sports day.

Volunteering Stay in Arusha for 1 Month

I had a wonderful and very memorable time in arusha at the opengate volunteer hostel. The hosts welcomed me with open arms and they both made me feel at home immediately. Everything was organized perfectly and i could always contact the hosts whenever i had questions. I really enjoyed volunteering at Peace School, especially playing and doing craft projects with the younger students. The neighborhood of the opengate hostel was also very safe and the people so nice and kind. The trips were organized perfectly and especially the safari was an exceptional experience. I will never forget this amazing time in Arusha and i am so grateful.

Adventure in Tanzania

I spent 6 weeks volunteering in Arusha with this organization. On the first day, I got a tour of the city Arusha so I already had my first colorful impressions and could go there by myself from then on which was very nice. The Daladalas, the public transport there, are an experience but I always felt safe.

I did volunteering in the Peace Academy and the children there were the sweetest, I was always looking forward to seeing them again.

Michelle was extremely helpful with helping me plan stuff that I could do next to going to the school so I had the opportunity to go on a 4-day safari and do some day trips as well which I would 100% recommend!!

The Opengate Volunteering and Travel organization and all the people that are involved in it really made my trip one of a lifetime, I always felt supported.

Pros
  • Spend time with kids
  • Be independent
  • Go on adventures
Cons
  • Might be alone sometimes

An unforgettable experience

I stayed with Opengate for a month in Arusha. Everything was very well coordinated and Michelle was always there to support. It was an amazing experience to be a part from the school and to support the teacher in any way i could. Also next to the program there was always something to do, a day trip, discovering more from Arusha or learning more about the culture, Michelle had always a great idea. I recommend it to everyone, who truly wants to be a part of a great community, here you‘re not only a one of many, you‘ll get a part of a family.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
You don‘t have to change the world here. Advices and ideas that can be implemented in the culture here are important. Try to observe first a little bit and then you will see how the people are working and what could be done. Baby steps and not all in once. Something they can stick to in the future when you‘re not around anymore.
Pros
  • Hospitable people all around
  • Great Food
  • Made friends that lasted
