Great time in London with lite regal

As a student at Wellesley College in the U.S., I’m always looking for opportunities that are not only meaningful but also academically valuable. I was recommended Lite Regal Education’s Gap Year Medical Internship Programme, and I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

I joined the 4-week medical internship course in London, and from the very first day, everything was incredibly well organised. What really stood out to me was how this programme was structured to support students like me who are on the pre-med track. Knowing that the experience could count toward my U.S. medical pathway credits made it even more worthwhile — but beyond the credits, the learning itself was exceptional.

The clinical exposure was eye-opening. We had the chance to observe real healthcare environments, learn directly from medical professionals, and understand how the UK healthcare system compares to the U.S. system. This global perspective is something you simply can’t get from a classroom. I developed a deeper understanding of patient care, medical ethics, teamwork in hospitals, and the day-to-day realities of being a doctor. It confirmed for me that medicine is absolutely the right path.

Lite Regal also balanced the academic side with personal development and cultural experience. Choosing to take a gap-style study experience in London was the best decision I could have made. Living in one of the most exciting cities in the world while gaining medical experience made the entire journey unforgettable. After sessions, we explored historic areas, museums, and landmarks — it was the perfect mix of study and life experience. London is such a global city, and being there helped me grow in independence and confidence.

The support from the Lite Regal team was outstanding. They were always available, approachable, and genuinely cared about every student’s goals. They helped us reflect on what we were learning, guided us professionally, and made sure we were comfortable both academically and personally. I never felt like “just another student” — the experience felt personalised and thoughtfully designed.

Another huge benefit was meeting like-minded students from around the world. We shared the same ambitions, and the friendships and professional connections I made are ones I know I’ll keep throughout my medical career.

If you are a pre-med student considering a gap experience that combines real medical insight, international exposure, academic value, and personal growth, I cannot recommend Lite Regal Education highly enough. This programme strengthened my medical school journey, expanded my worldview, and gave me memories I’ll carry for life.

An absolutely 5-star experience in every way.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?

My Medical Internship Experience in London with Lite Regal Education

As a third-year medical student from the U.S., joining the 3-week Medical Internship in London with Lite Regal Education was an incredible experience that gave me a real taste of what it’s like to work in healthcare abroad. The program mixed lectures, hands-on workshops, and hospital shadowing, giving me both theoretical and practical insight into medicine within the UK’s National Health Service (NHS).

The highlight of the internship was my clinical placement at The London Clinic, one of the country’s leading private hospitals. I shadowed doctors in both internal medicine and surgery, joining ward rounds, patient consultations, and even observing minor surgical procedures. The doctors were welcoming and happy to explain their decision-making processes, which really helped me connect the dots between what I’ve studied and how medicine works in real life. It was fascinating to compare how the UK and U.S. healthcare systems operate.

Outside the hospital, we attended interactive lectures and workshops that covered anatomy, diagnostics, medical ethics, and clinical communication. There were also practical sessions where we learned suturing, CPR, and other essential clinical skills. One particularly interesting workshop focused on how artificial intelligence is transforming modern medicine — something that really sparked my interest.

I stayed in Hayloft Point, a modern student residence near Aldgate East. My single ensuite room was small but comfy, with everything I needed — a private bathroom, desk, and Wi-Fi. The location was perfect for exploring London, and the student lounge made it easy to connect with others on the course.

By the end of the internship, I had gained new clinical confidence, international experience, and a deeper appreciation for medicine as a global profession.

What was your funniest moment?
A funny moment? One morning on the Tube, I politely asked a Londoner if the “subway” went to Baker Street. He smiled and said, “Mate, this is the Tube the subway sells sandwiches.” I’ll never mix that up again whilst in UK. Londoners made me feel welcome and kept laughing at my US accent :) Good Fun and London is a great place.
Pros
  • 1. Real Clinical Exposure Shadowing doctors at The London Clinic provided a genuine look into how medicine is practiced in the UK. Observing patient consultations, ward rounds, and minor surgeries gave me practical insight beyond textbooks.
  • 2. International Perspective Experiencing the NHS and London’s multicultural healthcare environment broadened my understanding of global medicine. Seeing how different systems handle patient care was eye-opening and inspiring.
  • 3. Central London Location & Accommodation Staying at Hayloft Point was convenient — close to hospitals, cafés, and the Tube. The single ensuite room was small but cozy, and being surrounded by other medical students made the experience social and support
Cons
  • 1. Long Days & Tight Schedule Between hospital shadowing, lectures, and workshops, the days were packed. It was rewarding but definitely tiring — especially adjusting to London’s fast-paced mornings.
  • 2. Limited Hands-On Practice As an international student, most of the work was observational, direct patient interaction was understandably limited due to not being qualified.
  • 3. Cost of Living in London London is amazing, but also expensive — especially eating out or taking transport daily. Budgeting ahead for meals, travel, and sightseeing is definitely a must.

Lite Regal Education Medical Internship Program London

My Medical Internship was extremely well organized. I choose the 2 week internship option residential and to be honest i wish I interned for another week. After 5pm I had free time to explore London and make new friends. Accommodation was centrally located in University accommodation. I will definitely recommend this as it has given me the opportunity to achieve what i needed and has expand my views to learning many things. its friendly atmosphere is very helpful for me and I really loved the internship.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
There are a lot of surprising things that happened to me while Interning abroad, I was with 2 other Intern and Shadowing Students from Portugal and Spain who were my age very friendly. We Explored London together. I would really recommend hiring the Santander bicycles which cost 2£ and a easy way to get around London. I also recommend a visit to borough market. Interning abroad with this program was extremely worthwhile and gave me a global out look on UK healthcare which is unlike US healthcare - in the UK they have national free healthcare.
