The Irish Arts and Culture Program is for students interested in a broad-exposure art program in Europe with tangible takeaways. This is a low-stress program designed to facilitate self-exploration using the arts as a vehicle for this journey.

Many of our past students have enjoyed taking part in a community-based program. This means that you will have your own home, neighbors and really get the chance to be part of our town. It also means that you will develop independence in an environment that resembles college life.

About Program

The Irish Arts & Culture Program offers students the chance to explore and develop their creative side, travel across Ireland, build independence and gain a deeper appreciation for Irish arts and culture.

Take part in daily workshops with professional Irish artists in photography, creative writing, charcoal, painting, sculpture and jewellery making. This program is centered around creativity, exploration and self-expression, and no previous artistic experience is required – just curiosity and enthusiasm! Most importantly, students grow in confidence and independence while living and creating alongside their peers in the beautiful seaside town of Bundoran, County Donegal.

This creative, relaxed and community-focused program is perfect for students who want to spend their time making art in a peaceful coastal village along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS SUMMARY

We welcome students from all walks of life and backrounds and have hosted many LGBTQIA+ students over the years. Irish Gap Year provides support to our LGBTQIA+ students to help them feel secure and safe during their time with us.

Impact 🌎

Irish Gap Year is a Carbon Negative Company, meaning we remove more C02 from the amosphere through our ecological volunteering than we create as an organization (including student flights to Europe).

Irish Gap Year Director, Ryan Allen is the Chair of the Gap Year Association's Sustainability Commitee and created the Association's Climate Action Plan in 2023.

IGY Arts and Culture 2021 experience

It was awesome! I was very nervous at the start, but everyone was incredibly supportive and helped me to overcome homesickness really quickly. The art classes themselves were great. The tutors are amazing and very easy to talk to, both for asking for tips and tricks on their specialized mediums but also just generally sharing about themselves. Charcoal was incredibly intimidating to start, but Michael (the tutor) made it very straightforward and demonstrated how easy it is to play with the medium and have fun with it! It was great to explore Ireland and develop my artistic skills while making new lifelong friends.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come with an open mind, waterproof clothes, and a passion for art! You definitely get what you put into every experience, so the more engaged you are the better of a time you'll have.

Irish gap year 2021 Fall

After my three month stay with IGY I find myself almost sad but excited to leave for IGY has help set me up for the upcoming years of my life and IGY takes you out of your world and puts you into another one. I loved all the art teachers and grew a connection with some of them outside the class room. They are wonderful talented artists. The trips were definitely my favorite part of the trip, place’s like, Sligo, Derry and Dublin were all amazing places with a great CRAIC! All in all my time here was well spent

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Enjoy it, don’t get lost on when you leave or anything of the sorts. Find your people here and enjoy the care free time of figuring your stuff out

IGY Arts and Culture 2021

Doing this program has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I was so nervous getting on the plane to come over here, I had no idea what to expect. But I immediately found a new home. All of the staff at IGY are very welcoming and helpful, and Ireland itself is absolutely stunning. I have made friends here that I am going to keep for life. We were able to go around Derry, Galway, Dublin, Belfast, and some other areas. Our art tutors were absolutely amazing as well, I really watched my art transform while I was here. I could not have had a more amazing time while I was here.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Go in with an open mind, and take advantage of every opportunity that they give you. It’s cliche but this program really is what you make of it. There are so many new things you could try and learn so don’t close yourself off to anything.

Irish gap year

I have made so many incredible friendships here during these last 3 months in Ireland. I tried so many new things- surfing, drawing in charcoal, watercolor etc.
I loved being able to show our art in the exhibition at the end of the three months here. It was the first time I had done anything like that and it was such an amazing feeling showing off all the art we made.
We also got to see so much of Ireland with all the trips we took. The land is truly beautiful- I especially liked the trip to Killarney national park.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Definitely learning to live with 14 other people. At first it was strange and then I got so close with everyone here.

Irish Gap Year - Arts and Culture Program

Despite the restrictions imposed by Covid, my IGY program in the fall of 2020 was a wonderful gap year experience. I loved being able to travel and see parts of northwest Ireland, especially our trip to Galway and the Aran Islands. We also took many hikes to explore Ireland's natural beauty. The best part of the art tutorials was having the opportunity to try different mediums I had not previously tried, such as woodworking, which I enjoyed so much that I bought my own set of chisels to continue developing my skills. I cannot say enough good things about the staff, who took such good care of me when I developed a medical issue and made sure that I got the medical care I needed. Kate, Sarah, Killian and Ryan are fun, knowledgeable, patient and kind. At a time when many programs were cancelling, they found a way to make our program safe, fun and successful.

IGY arts Bundoran

I really loved Irish gap year! The students and the faculty were all very kind, cooperative and supportive. We had a ton of craic despite covid being a thing (although there is not much covid in Ireland anyways). Our leaders, Fiona and Phil, made sure we had ample opportunities to see as much of Ireland as possible. We took a few trips up to Northern Ireland and visited Derry and Belfast (which I loved so much that I will actually be spending the week after the program in Belfast). We also took a trip to Galway which was super quaint and packed with a lot to do. Overall I would totally recommend Irish gap year to any student who needs a year off of college or a gap in between high school and college.

What was your funniest moment?
I honestly don’t think I could pick just one funniest moment but we had so much craic as a household. I know all of us will be going home with a whole slew of inside jokes.

Definitely would recommend

Doing this gap program was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. This experience was unforgettable I’ve discovered that I am a much better artist than I had initially thought and over the course of 3 months, i feel like I’ve improved on those skills. I also really got along with the tutors and feel like They’ve helped me bring out the artist in me. Our program leaders (Phil and Fiona) were amazing and I found that they’re easy to talk to and they made the program 10x better. I’ve also met some amazing people that were a part of this group that I will definitely be keeping in touch with after the program.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Exploring the mines was probably the most surprising thing we did because I never thought I’d end up going into an abandoned mineshaft and that was really cool.

IGY 2021

Attending IGY was one of the best decisions of my whole gap year experience. I learned so much about art—not only practical skills, but also the values of unjudged creativity and perseverance. Seeing the natural beauty of Ireland through hikes was wonderful, and though covid prevented us from visiting as many cities as I would like, I’ll remember the places we did visit forever. Anyone who enjoys nature, art, or is even just open to pushing themselves into something new (I wasn’t much of an artist myself before I came here) will love this program.
