About Program

This semester provides access to some of the US' most beautiful and remote landscapes ranging from the jagged peaks of the Grand Tetons to the depths of Utah’s most spectacular canyons. Hiking through Grand Teton National Park, we explore some of the most pristine wilderness of the West. Partnering with local conservationists in Yellowstone National Park, we understand the current threats to native wolf and grizzly bear populations. Soaring atop the rapids of the Colorado River, we retrace history as we address water rights issues while sleeping under brilliant starry skies. Building a toolkit of medical skills, we earn a Wilderness First Aid certification in Moab. Getting our hands dirty being a part of building sustainable homes, we see first-hand the power and potential of renewable energy sources. Meeting with migrants along Arizona’s borderlands, we get an inside glimpse into one of the US' most poignant challenges.

Diversity & Inclusion 💙

ARCC Programs believes that social responsibility is an essential aspect of our programming and business operations. We strongly believe that cultural immersion, cross-cultural conversations, and reflection on these experiences can increase self-awareness, promote empathy, and foster growth. We recognize that our staff, student, and participant body is not as diverse as we would hope. We also recognize that there are inherent imbalances in access, particularly when it comes to international travel and outdoor experiences. Recognizing the current imbalances and accessibility issues within the world and more specifically within experiential/outdoor education/gap year programs, we are able to move towards a more just and inclusive world.

ARCC is committed to increasing accessibility for our programs and supporting socioeconomic diversity within our community. ARCC’s Voyagers Scholarship provides up to five scholarship opportunities per semester to students who identify within the BIPOC community. These scholarships can range anywhere from $5,000-$8,000, and also include gear lending and mentorship support throughout the gap year experience. The Voyagers Scholarship can also be combined with ARCC Financial Aid.

Our Essential Eligibility Criteria outlines the requirements for participation in our programs to determine if our programs are a good fit for each student. While ARCC Gap is not a therapeutic program, we do provide an inclusive environment for students with neurodivergence. We have had students with various diagnosed neuro-differences (such as dyslexia, ADHD, ASD, TS, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, etc) find success on our gap semester programs.

During our interview process, we have open communication with students and families about the support ARCC instructors are able to provide students while on program. For students needing some additional support, we ask them to complete a “Plan of Action” with their at home support system. These plans may include additional information about communication/support preferences, coping strategies, and/or specific requirements to encourage the student to engage with the program effectively. Once on the program, our instructors will periodically check in individually with each student, help the student stay accountable to their Plan of Action, and provide general support to all participants.
ARCC Gap Travels to locations around the world that have varying levels of accommodations for students needing accessibility support. For this reason, please see our Essential Eligibility Criteria to see if our gap programs are a good fit for you.

Whenever possible (determined by specific location and program - ie. infrastructure, access to specific health care facilities, dietary options available, etc), we have successfully assisted students with anaphylactic allergies, chronic medical conditions, and other accommodations on programs. We recommend that you reach out with specific concerns to your Gap Director to find the right fit for you.

Impact 🌎

At ARCC Programs we recognize that all human action impacts our physical environment and the living beings on the planet. Everything on Earth plays a role in supporting life and we believe that it is our responsibility to have a net positive impact with our actions. We strive to balance the impacts of our programming by partnering with communities and organizations with similar goals toward bettering our planet for future generations.
ARCC believes that we (as an industry) need to shift the way we think about international service. We (as a society) have now come to realize that international volunteers often benefit from their service experience, while the impact on the community can be short-lived or even harmful. We at ARCC are taking the years of experience that we have in the international service learning realm, have reflected on previous mistakes, learned from our in-country partners, and have made changes. Our goal is to live, work, and learn alongside community members while also making a positive impact. We are committed to partnering with local community-driven organizations to focus on reciprocity while contributing to established long-term projects. It is our responsibility to engage in mutually beneficial community-driven projects and teach fair trade learning principles to our students.

An amazing experience!

My son just finished the program and we can’t say enough how amazing it was for him. He loved the adventures, the learning, the instructors, and the friends he made. It was seriously the experience of a lifetime!

The program was both relaxed enough that the kids had a great deal of independence, but structured enough that they were busy every day learning, exploring m, and laughing. My son’s stories are so incredible and the pictures that they took tell the tale of a tightknit group who came together and learned so much. I highly recommend this trip in this program.

ARCC Northwest Gap Semester

This experience was beyond incredible. I made lifelong friends and learned so much about the locations I traveled to. My leaders made sure everyone was happy and satisfied and getting the most out of this opportunity. I truly am a different person after this trip and I wouldn’t change one thing about it. I never thought I would hike 15 miles in a day, get my SCUBA open water diver certification, become a certified Wilderness First Responder, or hike through Glacier National Park and spit a bear and her cub next to the trail. I saw so many new things and places that I would never have been able to see without ARCC. EVERYONE should take a gap year and do a semester long program, it helped me understand exactly what I want to do for this coming fall and opened so many doors for me. Thank you ARCC for an incredible 2 1/2 months.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Manta ray night dive after our SCUBA certification.

Northwest Review

Amazing trip where you get to see incredible places. Grow like a family within your group and learn all types of new skills. Learn to love camping and everything about the outdoors. Highly recommend anyone to anyone taking a gap year. This trip taught me all about living and interacting with a group, how to be more flexible, and how to act with different people. The instructors are also great mentors who are there to lead, guide and support everyone within our group. Overall a life changing experience.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
When one of the other kids in my group was taken out my a rip tide in Hawaii. I had to go into the water and help him out. It was very nerve racking and life changing.

Arcc Nortwest

I never thought I would be doing a gap program and the decision to go on the northwest gap program and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I grew as a person exponentially and I made life-long friendships. I also saw beautiful places that I will probably not see in a very long time. The curriculum was awesome because it was more hands on learning instead of learning in a classroom. The events that were planned were all very interesting and engaging. I really did not have a bad or boring moment on this trip.

What was your funniest moment?
We made bagels and didn’t cook them and everyone was disappointed.

Northwest B review

I had an amazing trip. We went to incredible locations, met awesome people, created lasting bonds, and made unforgettable memories. It was organized really well! The people on the trip were amazing and our friendships were only strengthened through the places we went. Traveling as a group and camping in nature is a really unique and special experience, and even more special to do it in Northwest United States. Not often in your life will you be able to see a moose in your campsite at 9am, the beautiful teton mountains from your tent, and make such amazing friends.

What was your funniest moment?
Swimming in the Yellowstone River! It was soooo cold!

ARCC Northwest Fall Semester 2020

This program provides a unique opportunity to travel, learn, and develop all whilst in nature. Learning about different parts of the country and seeing first hand a variety of different ways of life truly broadens horizons while also providing an enjoyable travel experience. Through this you grow as a person and leader by working with different types of people and by participating in a variety of work. The opportunity to do all these things while living out of a tent is wonderful. It provides a family aspect and unbreakable bond to the members of the group and to the world itself. Living outside is an incredible experience and allows you to get to know yourself and appreciate more. I highly recommend this program for anyone looking to get out of their comfort zones, explore, learn, have fun, and meet amazing people who will become family.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Go in with an open mind, desire to learn, and willingness to be flexible. This is an extraordinary experience and if you go in with the right mindset the things you will takeaway will be life changing. Between people you meet, places you see, and adapting to different environments you will be mentally and physically challenged but it is 100% worth it. You will learn about yourself, how to work with others and grow to truly love the world around you.

ARCC Northwest Program

This program was amazing. I made lifelong friends and memories as well as going through many experiences that resulted in huge personal growth. I also came away from this trip with an amazing appreciation for the outdoors and for the incredible diversity of the natural world within the United States. I have never laughed as hard as I did on this program — I definitely had some of the happiest and most exciting moments of my life. However, if you go on this trip, you have to be ready for changes of plans and long car drives, but honestly, that craziness resulted in many of the most influential moments of the trip. If you want a crazy exciting American road trip, where you see some of the most beautiful nature on earth, go on this semester.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Go into this program with an open mind, ready to make friends with people who have crazily different lives and learn about everything from the geysers of Yellowstone to the San Juan Islands to cooking on a camp stove and everything in between.

Northwest B

I think this program is amazing for anyone who wishes to see things they’ve never seen before and explore places not many people have visited. We walked in the shadows of the Grand Tetons, through the rainforest in Olympic National Park, and on the sandy shores of Hawaii. This program has adventure had everything I was looking for in a Gap Semester program. I’ve grown into myself during this trip. And I know that anyone else who experiences ARCC Northwest Gap Semester program will be forever changed, just like I was.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
During the last week of the program we did out SCUBA certification. Going into the water for the first time was so nerve-racking and I almost chickened out but with the encouragement of my instructors and group mates I pushed through and had one of the most amazing and memorable experiences of my life.
