Diversity & Inclusion

BIPOC Support

ARCC Programs believes that social responsibility is an essential aspect of our programming and business operations. We strongly believe that cultural immersion, cross-cultural conversations, and reflection on these experiences can increase self-awareness, promote empathy, and foster growth. We recognize that our staff, student, and participant body is not as diverse as we would hope. We also recognize that there are inherent imbalances in access, particularly when it comes to international travel and outdoor experiences. Recognizing the current imbalances and accessibility issues within the world and more specifically within experiential/outdoor education/gap year programs, we are able to move towards a more just and inclusive world.

ARCC is committed to increasing accessibility for our programs and supporting socioeconomic diversity within our community. ARCC’s Voyagers Scholarship provides up to five scholarship opportunities per semester to students who identify within the BIPOC community. These scholarships can range anywhere from $5,000-$8,000, and also includes gear lending and mentorship support throughout the gap year experience. The Voyagers Scholarship can also be combined with ARCC Financial Aid. If you are interested in applying, please reach out to gap@arccprograms.com.

Neurodivergent Support

Our Essential Eligibility Criteria outlines the requirements for participation in our programs to determine if our programs are a good fit for each student. While ARCC Gap is not a therapeutic program, we do provide an inclusive environment for students with neurodivergence. We have had students with various diagnosed neuro-differences (such as dyslexia, ADHD, ASD, TS, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, etc) find success on our gap semester programs.

During our interview process, we have open communication with students and families about the support ARCC instructors are able to provide students while on program. For students needing some additional support, we ask them to complete a “Plan of Action” with their at home support system. These plans may include additional information about communication/support preferences, coping strategies, and/or specific requirements to encourage the student to engage with the program effectively. Once on the program, our instructors will periodically check in individually with each student, help the student stay accountable to their Plan of Action, and provide general support to all participants.

Accessibility Support

ARCC Gap Travels to locations around the world that have varying levels of accommodations for students needing accessibility support. For this reason, please see our Essential Eligibility Criteria to see if our gap programs are a good fit for you.

Whenever possible (determined by specific location and program - ie. infrastructure, access to specific health care facilities, dietary options available, etc), we have successfully assisted students with anaphylactic allergies, chronic medical conditions, and other accommodations on programs. We recommend that you reach out with specific concerns to your Gap Director to find the right fit for you.

Impact

Sustainability

At ARCC Programs we recognize that all human action impacts our physical environment and the living beings on the planet. Everything on Earth plays a role in supporting life and we believe that it is our responsibility to have a net positive impact with our actions. We strive to balance the impacts of our programming by partnering with communities and organizations with similar goals toward bettering our planet for future generations.

Ethical Impact

ARCC believes that we (as an industry) need to shift the way we think about international service. We (as a society) have now come to realize that international volunteers often benefit from their service experience, while the impact on the community can be short-lived or even harmful. We at ARCC are taking the years of experience that we have in the international service learning realm, have reflected on previous mistakes, learned from our in-country partners, and have made changes. Our goal is to live, work, and learn alongside community members while also making a positive impact. We are committed to partnering with local community-driven organizations to focus on reciprocity while contributing to established long-term projects. It is our responsibility to engage in mutually beneficial community-driven projects and teach fair trade learning principles to our students.

ARCC HAWAII gap - amazing program

I am so happy i chose the ARCC Hawaii Gap Year Trip. I was not ready for college and needed to grow more as a person and wanted to have new experiences traveling. This trip was amazing for that. We did really cool things like scuba, manta ray snorkels, and hikes to volcanoes. Those were some highlights for me, but we also did a fair amount of service during the trip. It felt like a lot at times, but looking back it taught me to push myself in ways i hadn’t before. I have met the most amazing people on this program and had the best leaders i hope to always stay in contact with them.

ARCC Hawaii Gap Semester

I can easily say that going to Hawaii with ARCC was one of the best decisions of my life. I made such close friends and was constantly laughing with my group. The people that ARCC attracts for its program are simply awesome. I was nervous going into the program as I had never been camping before, but I grew to love it and impressed myself with how many tent-related obstacles I conquered. This program pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way possible, and I grew so much as a person as a result of that. I loved the limited technology aspect of this program, as it really helped the group bond on a deeper level and allowed us all to live in the present. It was so refreshing to be able to block out the outside world and appreciate everything that was right in front of me. I loved all of the partners that we worked with for service projects - ARCC did a great job of finding these awesome organizations and people. I can't express how much fun I had on this program, and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in experiential learning and is down for an adventure.

What was your funniest moment?
There are too many hilarious moments to choose from --- our group never failed to crack me up. Some highlights are when Sean spilled the whole pot of spaghetti during the wind storm, when Xander tried to clean his tent in the ocean with socks on, when we made up funny voices while chopping ginger at Volcanoes National Park, and anytime Kelsey sang along to a song in the van.

ARCC Hawaii

I had an amazing 2 months with ARCC in Hawaii. I was iffy about traveling due to covid, but everyone in the office was super helpful and easy to contact. I felt safe about covid the whole time as ARCC had a good plan set in place to help combat this uncertain time. I felt this program had the perfect balance of service and adventure as well as tent camping and cabins/hostels. I was able to foster some really great relationships between those in my group as well as my instructors and was able to learn a lot. The service we did was super exciting and meaningful, my favorite was doing aquaponics at UHMC :) the partners we worked with were all lovely and I was able to learn a lot from each and every one of them. I’d definitely recommend this program to anyone looking for a mix of service, adventure, and experiential learning!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I had never camped before this trip but I now LOVE it!! It took a little getting used to, but I grew to love my small tent and living out of a backpack. It taught me a lot about problem solving and was amazing being outside all the time. You’re able to connect with the group super fast when tenting!

ARCC Hawaii

this was the best trip ever ever. because of covid, we had a bunch of our service fall through but luckily ARCC is such a flexible company that they filled in the spots for service and we did so many amazing projects ! so many times we’d be in the van on the way back to our campsite and our group would be talking about how amazing that day of service was, no matter if it was scheduled 3 months ago or 1 week ago. i have so many everlasting memories and friends that i will take with me, and i’ve also learned so much information ! all my “goals” for this semester have been fulfilled and beyond: i made amazing friends, funny moments, moments of growth, and i’ve learned a lot about what i want to do with my future. thank you ARCC for an incredible 2 months :)

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
the scariest moment to me was when we were earning our SCUBA certification. being 60 feet underwater is super unfamiliar to me, as is for most people. luckily, i had great friends who knew i would be scared and had a whole set of games and things to do when they saw me freaking — my partner started dancing the macarena and playing rock paper scissors with me whenever i’d look nervous. this trip has brought me the best friends and amazing experiences where i was able to push myself and do things i’d never think of doing, because i had the right support.

Amazing experience!!

Even with the pandemic situation, I had the best time on this trip. One of the big focuses is student leadership so all the meals & many of the activities are student planned, and I feel like I gained a lot of experience. My group loved thrift shopping and beaches, so we did a lot of city days and surfing, but there were tons of opportunities for hikes, service work, whatever the group wants to do, really. The trip leaders and other students are so fun, there’s a perfect mix of exploring the cities and nature activities, and the curriculum is fascinating. We were camping probably 75% of the time because of COVID restrictions, so I can’t speak to the accommodations very accurately, but the campsites were pretty nice. The leaders facilitated a lot of personal growth experiences and I got to know myself a lot better over the 2 months, so if you like adventure-type stuff, learning about social activism/Indigenous history, and want to *find yourself*, I definitely recommend this trip. Also, feel free to email me if you have any questions or want to talk more about the trip!!! I’m doing another ARCC semester in Belize in the spring, which should be a good sign :) email: audreyxcobb@gmail.com

ARCC

I had a really great time on my trip even though it was during the COVID pandemic. I had really great instructors and made so many close friends. This trip helped me gain confidence in living away from home and I was able to learn through experience as opposed to being in a classroom, which was great for me. I enjoyed every main thing that we did and didn't really have any bad days at all. I feel really grateful to have gone on this trip and would recommend that people considering a gap year to go for it!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
We were scuba diving and saw a tiger shark, which was pretty nerve-racking in the moment but we discussed what we would do if we did see one beforehand which helped overcome it, and we were all calm and collected and didn't panic. Overall it was super cool, too.

ARCC Hawaii gap semester

I had the best semester in Hawaii with ARCC. My group was amazing, and we got along really well. Everyone came into this experience with an open mind, and we had so much fun exploring and learning together. ARCC managed to make this experience phenomenal despite the ongoing pandemic, and I always felt safe. Everyone that we interacted with outside our group was extremely kind and very willing to help us learn. I enjoyed getting my SCUBA certification and going on hikes and adventures around the Big Island. My instructors were caring, kind, and responsible. They helped us delve deeper into our passions and have meaningful experiences. The also helped us grow as leaders and individuals and were eager to teach, learn, and adventure alongside the group. I could not have asked for a better way to spend the first half of my gap year.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come into this trip with an open mind. Be ready to meet new people, have new experiences, try new things, and have fun!

ARCC Hawaii semester

I had a great time! It was a nice balance of adventure activities and bonding with the group. I loved my instructors and they were very well prepared for the job and supportive of us. They were also very passionate and knowledgeable about the things we were doing. I liked that we spent half the time in Hawaii and half on the mainland. This gave me two distinct experiences that I found very valuable yet different. I also liked how we moved around so much, I feel like I saw a very wide variety of places in just eight short weeks.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Bring an open mind! The program really is what you make of it.
