My Costa Rica Adventure

My experience on my GLA program was completely life-changing. I traveled to Costa Rica alone, so I went into it very nervous about being away from home and whether the people would be inviting or not, but all of my nervousness went away when I started my program. I made lasting connections with many of my companions on this trip, and I made so many memories that will last a lifetime! The nighttime turtle walks were such an amazing experience, because on our third night walk, our group found a leatherback sea turtle. I was completely in awe when we discovered it, and it is something I may never would have experienced if not for this program. Also, as someone who is going into the environmental field, the experience that I had on this trip has inspired me more than any other experience in my life to pursue what I am passionate about.
The only downside to my experience is that my group and I were not prepared for their being no airconditioning in the house we stayed at, no WiFi, and only around two hours of electricity each day. I feel like it is not highlighted enough in the program description, for my group and I would have packed our attire differently if we had known. But overall, I would highly recommend this program to everyone!

What was your funniest moment?
Although I have many funny memories from my program, the one that first came to mind was when a few of my friends and I tricked our friend that he had slept all the way until the end of the trip, and he believed it!
Pros
  • The staff was very inviting and positive.
  • All of the kids in my program were very nice, which made it a fun atmosphere.
  • We found a sea turtle on one of our night walks!
Cons
  • Our group was robbed, and many people had cash and airpods stolen.
  • It was very difficult to be without airconditioning and electricity, which nobody in the program was prepared for.
  • There was a very strict dress code in the packing list, but it was completely irrelevant at camp. This was frustrating because it limited the clothes that I packed.

First time away from home alone

My son attended the Sea Turtle Initiative. It was the first time he had been away completely on his own and it was a wonderful, valuable experience. He learned he can travel on his own, cope in a country where he does not speak the first language, make new friends and his self confidence soared. It's a really nice combination of volunteer work which is great for resume/university application and fun activities. Everything is so well organized, truly felt comfortable with GLA as an organizer. Even called to Costa Rica once and spoke to his team leader as we noticed he had forgotten his cellphone charger and he was flying home by himself.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
He actually ate live crickets! (totally optional)
Pros
  • Self-confidence building
  • New friends
  • Totally unique experience
Cons
  • Bit homesick by the end
  • No internet access (also a pro)
  • Saying goodbye to new friends

We are beyond happy with our child's experience!

Our son spent his 16th birthday with GLA! I was nervous to send him out of the country on his own, but confident that it would be a great experience. He returned and it was better than we even expected!

We received a blog about every other day with lots of photos and an update - the coolest photo was of our son with a homemade birthday cake they had made for him, we never even mentioned his birthday! It was nice to see the photos and what they were up to.

When he returned he was smelly, dirty and happy, just as a 16 year old boy should be! He gained SO MUCH confidence during his stay in Costa Rica. He made lots of new friends and they still have a group text chat going 6 months later. He loved where they stayed at the Eco Lodge with Jason, who he still talks about all the time, and hopes to go back for a family vacation to see Jason again, and learn more about the community.

I look forward to sending him on another trip this coming summer, and his younger sister will follow in his footsteps at GLA.

I am VERY happy with the support from GLA!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
the large cayman that lived in the lake and ate chicken was super surprising!
Pros
  • well trained staff
  • great food for the kids
  • "roughing it" vibe while still being in a safe environment
Cons
  • can be pricey for some families
  • mosquitos but nothing anyone can do about that

My review

In this whole experience that I had, it was full of highs and lows. The majority of the lows was due to my own fault do to not bringing enough water, snacks, hygiene products, money, and entertainment sources. But even with those problems I had an amazing time with all my peers and the staff. The views of the nature and towns were also amazing and would sometimes remind me of home. The night life was also lots of fun whenever we went to a restaurant or the supermarket. The staff was also always there to help whenever we needed help.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be sure to bring back ups to your back ups, you will run out of something eventually.
Pros
  • New people and experiences
  • Beautiful location
  • Always fun
Cons
  • Have to bring lots of money for food
  • A lot of down time with nothing to do

Sea Turtle Initiative is an Exciting and Valuable Opportunity!

Our son attended the Sea Turtle Initiative/Costa Rica during the summer of his sophomore year. We felt confident in our choice and the staff of GLA kept us informed. We felt good about sending our son overseas with this group. We had all the information we needed, and the staff posted pictures of the activities so we could enjoy peace of mind knowing our son was well cared for. He had a fabulous experience and grew in his knowledge of the environment, as well as enjoying a new culture and friends.

Pros
  • GLA Staff is very supportive and communicates all details
  • Pictures included activities and all students
  • Well rounded cultural experience and growth opportunity
Cons
  • There was a lot of detail in the preparation documents - but all was in order

Costa Rica Animal Rescue - Amazing Summer Trip!

This had to be one of my favorite trips overall. Not only did I get to embrace the culture in Costa Rica and practice a different language, but there were also so many animals, and that's always a plus! Not to mention Costa Rica has some bomb ice cream.

This trip also inspired me to keep working for what I want to do as a future career - help animals abroad in shelters but also on the streets. At first, I was a little unsure about going on one of these trips, because a trip I went on in 2022 was very different. However, I don't regret going on this trip and definitely recommend it to any animal lovers, or just anyone trying to get away from home!

I would highly recommend this trip for people trying to get out of their comfort zones but not sure how, animals have a way to get you out of your shell!

Pros
  • Animals
  • Music/culture lessons
Cons
  • Really hot
  • Bugs

Wonderful adventure

My 17 year old daughter went with a friend and loved it. The first night was a little difficult because it was a very rustic camp and took some getting used to, but by day two she was in the groove. Took her out of her comfort zone, met wonderful new friends, and explored. Our daughter is vegetarian and had lots of options for food & really enjoyed it. The night patrol got rained out a few times but they were able to see turtle eggs that were laid. I would highly recommend this company and they offer camps all over the globe.

Pros
  • Met students from other places
  • Got to see how others cultures live
  • Became more independent
Cons
  • Mosquitoes
  • Mosquitoes
  • Mosquitoes

Costa Rica Ocean Conservation and Surf Adventure

I recently had the incredible opportunity to volunteer in Costa Rica on an ocean conservation and surf adventure youth program, and it was an experience that surpassed all my expectations. Organized by GLA, this immersive journey not only allowed me to explore the pristine beaches of Costa Rica but also to actively contribute to marine conservation efforts. However, this program was not just about giving back; it was about personal growth. I developed a deeper appreciation for nature, gained new skills, and formed meaningful connections with fellow volunteers from around the world.

  • Food
  • Surf
