Experience of a lifetime!

My daughter participated in the 12-day scuba and sailing trip in the summer of 2022. She had never been away from us for longer than a few days so this was a new challenge for her. This trip provided her with an experience she will never forget and she is excited to be able to participate in another trip this summer. As first timers, we had a lot of questions that were quickly answered by the Broadreach team. The team was helpful from start to finish and we were very impressed with how well they communicated with us. Our daughter not only learned to sail and got her scuba certification- she also learned invaluable lessons from traveling on her own, living aboard a sailboat, cooking her own meals, and forming relationships with her crew mates. She got to see parts of the world not visible from land and even pushed herself to complete- and then fall in love with- night diving! We are so thankful we came across Broadreach and can’t recommend the program enough!

Pros
  • Excellent communication from Broadreach leading up to, during, and after the trip
  • Amazing and knowledgeable counselors on the boat
  • Opportunity for our teenager to grow independently and to experience the beauty of the ocean

Life changing experience!!

My time with Broadreach was such a unique opportunity to not only learn how to scuba dive and how to sail, but also to learn and grow as an individual. I was pushed to develop leadership skills and life skills that I have been able to apply in other aspects of my life. It was such a unique experience making friendships with people that I lived so closely and learned along side with. We still send snail mail to each other to this day! While living on a boat, we were fully immersed with ocean ecosystems, which inspired me to live more consciously and pursue a degree in sustainability.

Pros
  • Hands on learning
  • Leadership Development
  • Unique Experience

Response from Broadreach Summer Adventures

Thank you for your review. I appreciate you taking the time to write out and submit your concerns about your Caribbean 12-day sailing and scuba experience this summer.

I am sorry and disappointed to hear that your trip fell so far short of your expectations. You raise a number of very serious concerns about your program experience; I appreciate your patience while I look into your concerns and try to get a better idea of what happened on this program and how we can do better in the future.

While I am not there right now, I have spent 20 years in the Caribbean with our programs and understand many of the issues that can come up.

Things on boats sometimes break, marine toilets can (will) get clogged if toilet paper or feminine products are flushed down there, and students occasionally run low on air during dives. I don't intend this to be dismissive at all, but these things do come up on program and need to be addressed and debriefed with the students so you can have the proper context to understand them. Based on your reports, it doesn't seem like this happened appropriately on this program and that is a problem.

I am particularly troubled by your reports that you did not feel your personal convictions and religious beliefs were respected. As you note, Broadreach is a secular organization that welcomes students of all backgrounds. It is very important to me that everyone feels comfortable and not demeaned within the group. We spend a lot of our time and energy during our staff training focusing on creating and maintaining a positive social environment among our students. This includes not feeling bullied, demeaned or disrespected for your beliefs. The staff have a responsibility to all members of the group to not allow this sort of behavior and based on your reports, it sounds like they came up short in this case and I apologize for that.

I am also troubled by your reports that there was not adequate food for the group. Each group is different and it can be challenging to plan menus and quantities that work across the board, but as you note, it's important for active students to have enough calories every day. Sometimes a group eats more than expected and supplies run low, but we are set up to re-supply along the way and my expectation is that there should always be enough to eat. I am looking into the particular circumstances on your program to see where or why this didn't happen in this case.

It is my goal that every Broadreach student has an amazing experience on our trips. While it sounds like you had some positive experiences too, unfortunately, it seems they were tainted with some of the challenges you noted below.

I appreciate you raising your concerns and sharing your specific feedback with me. I am going to be undertaking a thorough review of your concerns, this program, the staff and the reports from other students to try to get to the bottom of where we fell short on this program and what lessons we can apply to improve our systems going forward.

We have reached out to you and will be happy to circle back with you once I have had the chance to explore this a little deeper.

In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to us directly if you have questions.

Caribbean underwater discovery

This was my first trip out of the country, which was especially scary for me because I was going to meet up with a group of people who I didn't know and live with them for three weeks on a sailboat. Deciding to go on this trip with broadreach was easily one of the greatest decisions I have ever made. I learned so much about myself and became way more confident than I was at the beginning of the trip. I learned great leadership and life skills all while having the most fun of my entire life with friends that I will stay in touch with forever. I learned to scuba dive on this trip which is now one of my greatest passions. The people at broadreach have been nothing but helpful and nice. This trip has given me more life experience and fun than I could have ever imagined possible in such a short amount of time and I would highly recommend it to everyone!

Best Learning Experience Possible

My trip could not have been better. It was the most amazing way to learn immersed in the environment. I could not have asked for a better summer. My summer of Broadreach I made friends I will never lose and memories I will never forget. From breathing in this new underwater world to skippering our catamaran. The bond you form with the instructors and your friends is like no other. The instructors we had were amazing, some of the best teachers I have ever had. We eventually became a family. This program opened up a world of new possibility and new knowledge for me. If you have the opportunity to take this trip- do it. I promise you won't regret it.

Once in a Lifetime Experience

Incredible! A group of very different teens coming together in paradise on gorgeous boats learning to accept each other's differences and work together! Every activity is well thought out, executed perfectly, and so fun and memorable, from diving at night with sharks to building trails atop Mount Scenery in Saba! The staff are all well educated, fun, and understanding. They cultivate the perfect balance of leadership - allowing the crew to find our own way but stepping in when we need support. The close, shared living quarters allow you to become so close with the other students and create friendships that last way beyond the trip! Everyone accepts each other for who they are and encourage one another to be themselves. You come away from the trip with so many new skills, experiences, and a more understanding outlook on life.

What would you improve about this program?
The only way they could improve this program is to offer a longer one with more time to visit the different islands and dive!
