Zoe’s review on Suwandi foundation

I spent two months in Bali with the Suwandi foundation, and can confidently say that those two months were absolutely magical. The program was very organized, the staff were so sweet and welcoming. The staff offered lots of support and advice.

Teaching was so much fun, and the students were so enthusiastic to learn which made teaching feel so much more rewarding. I wish I never had to leave! I will absolutely be doing this program again.

I absolutely recommend this program and have 0 complaints.

So fun!

Such a fun program! They really help immerse you in the culture and community. If you have never taught before there is a ton of support and resources for you to learn. The accommodation is beautiful and so is the town of Tulamben! You also have free time on weekends where you can explore other parts of Bali! The community is so welcoming and the kids want to talk and play with you. 100% I would recommend if you want to learn about a new culture, meet a new community, and see a different side to Bali besides the Australian party culture.

Amazing experience!

It is a super welcoming environment. I got to learn so much and experience so much from this program. I really enjoyed all the activities, all the people I met, all the food I got to try, and overall just an amazing opportunity! It is a super safe space that allows us to try new things and make mistakes. It was very educational and also made sure we understood and respected the community that lives there. I got to interact directly with the community and build strong connections with the people around me. I made life changing memories and I can’t wait to return again next year!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I think just the lifestyle there and all the different cultural and religious traditions.
Pros
  • Lots to learn
  • Lots of fun
  • Lots to explore

Yuji’s Review

As someone who wanted to try an experience abroad, especially a place I was unfamiliar of, I am satisfied and happy that I chose The Suwandi Foundation to intern. It had a good mix of job responsibility and cultural immersions. The staff and the people involved with Suwandi were positive, welcoming, and grateful! There were opportunities to practice leadership in the teaching setting and the number of interactions I’ve had with students, locals, staff, and fellow interns. I recommend it for people who are new to Indonesia or hungry travelers.

Amazing Team, Incredible Experience!

My time in Bali was nothing short of incredible. Our intern cohort was filled with very talented and caring people from diverse backgrounds. The program staff ensured we were both safe and having a great time every step of the way. I also appreciated how submersed we were with the Balinese culture: we went to local markets, visited a family home, and taught local children English. We also had our weekends to ourselves, which was a great way to explore the island further. Highly recommend to anyone looking to have a fulfilling experience overseas!

What was your funniest moment?
The program provided regular drivers for interns, so we got to know them well. Some of the funniest moments of the trip came from our daily rides and the conversations we had with them and the other interns.
Pros
  • Amazing staff
  • Great food
  • Impactful

Anna's Experience Volunteering with Suwandi Foundation

I interned with the Suwandi Foundation in summer 2024 for their Social Impact Internship. Before the trip the Suwandi Foundation leaders were very helpful in working with me to develop a tailored internship that utilized by skills and desires for career development, while also fulfilling a need within their organization. I studied accounting in college and had also previously had experience doing multiple marketing internships in the past, so my internship with Suwandi Foundation was a mix of both accounting and marketing. For the accounting side of things, I helped develop easy to use financial statements for the English teaching foundation we taught at. I also created marketing materials for the Suwandi Foundations for their future volunteers to see and utilize. In addition, I taught at Yayasan LMU, the English teaching foundation, for the youngest class of students Moonshine class. Both the internship and teaching were incredibly enlightening, eye opening, rewarding, and honestly life changing for me. Bali is such an incredible community with rich culture, religion, and beauty everywhere you look. I highly recommend this program if you are looking for an internship aboard.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I ate some really delicious octopus from Bali Dapur Mula!
Pros
  • Incredible cultural immersion
  • Creating long lasting bonds and new friends
  • Rewarding service
Cons
  • Way too beautiful of scenery
  • Lots of mosquitos
  • Hot hot (but we get AC yay)

Suwandi Foundation

This program is made by/attracts the most kind, selfless, willing-to-help people. The co-founders and everyone involved in running it are insanely passionate and sweet people who are there to support their participants. The volunteers that a program like this attracts are just as cool, amazing people who love to learn more about their mission and share this experience. I learned so much about myself, new food, Balinese culture, and the people I was interacting with on a daily basis. If you’re considering this program, do it. You will experience the kindest local people, other travelers, and of course the lovely people who run it. This was the coolest kick-off to my gap year and I have nothing but good things to share (obviously). The program itself is very well thought out and the outreach/impact is clear, it is insanely rewarding and special to be a part of. Bali is the most magical place and I feel so lucky to have experienced meeting the most magical people as well.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice for figure participants on this program is to truly take it all in and show up for every moment. I learned a lot about myself and how I interact with certain aspects of my environment and I think that this experience was the best first stepping stone into figuring out my life outside of high school. I would suggest that all future participants try to engage in as much conversation as possible with as many people as possible, it made the experience that much better.
Pros
  • Incredible food
  • Passionate, kind people
  • Once in a lifetime experience
Cons
  • Occasional cockroach/spider
