Unforgettable Experiences

Being a part of Toucan Abroad was the best decision I ever made. I didn’t just grow professionally in the physical therapy clinics. I also improved my Spanish, gained a deeper understanding of other cultures, and learned so much about everyday life in Spain.

I got so close to everyone on the trip, and I truly believe those friendships are for life. The staff at Toucan Abroad were incredibly supportive and easy to reach, they answered every question and helped whenever we needed it, but also let us have independence so we could really experience exchange life.

I absolutely loved my time in Spain with Toucan Abroad and my whole group. If I ever had the chance to do it again, I definitely would.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My most nerve wracking moment was in the clinics on the second week, our PTs did not speak a lot of English, and I did not speak a lot of Spanish. When we walked into the clinic we introduced our selves to the mom of the patient instead of the PT which was embarrassing. We later met the PT and introduced our selves to her, however we were very nervous to speak with them since we had made the mistake of assuming the mom of the patient was the PT. We overcame this though by using our phones to translate, asking questions about the patients and what techniques they were using.
Pros
  • Getting to live abroad.
  • Meeting so many amazing people
  • Taking in the culture of Spain
Cons
  • Transport around for group trips to and from the train station from residence
  • More group activities would have been nice
  • More detail about the plans before the trip began

Toucan Abroad - Sevilla

Participating in this program was the best decision I’ve ever made. Being able to see how physical therapy is done in another country solidified my decision to peruse this career. All the staff at the clinics were eager to teach and share their knowledge in the field while wanted to learn from us. Outside of clinic there was plenty of time to explore the beauty of Sevilla and fully immerse yourself in the culture. I strongly recommend doing this program as it’s a once in a lifetime experience that you can’t pass up!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions in clinic. The therapists want to teach and give you the hands on experience with the different techniques. Your experience is truly up to you and how you interact with everyone!
Pros
  • Observing PT
  • Exploring a new country and learning its history
  • Making lifelong friends
Cons
  • Paying for most transportation yourself

Great experience

This program was amazing. Physical therapy has lots of differences overseas and it was an excellent experience to see how physical therapists in another country run their practice and it really offers a unique way to get your shadowing hours before PT school. It also will bring unique styles of therapy to the United States after people who have an experience like this graduate PT school and begin their practice. Additionally, the opportunity to see 3 different cities in Spain and learn so much about Spanish culture and history within just 2 weeks is amazing considering you also complete 40 hours of shadowing. The balance of all the experiences is amazing.

Love this trip

My experience in Seville for the PT program was something that was so different yet so fun and interesting to me! I loved every bit of it. I enjoyed observing how physical therapists worked closely with patients in a different healthcare setting. Being in Seville made the experience even more engaging, since I was away from home. The energy of the city, the people, and the daily routines added a unique perspective that made learning feel exciting and memorable. I would recommend this program and trip to anyone and everyone who is interested in pursuing a PT career!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve wrecking moment was probably being in a completely new environment that was thousands of miles away from home. Being in a housing room with a roommate who I never met until showing up the day of was so nerve wrecking but fun. I got to meet the people I waited so long to meet, and it was the best 2 weeks I could have possibly had!
Pros
  • New fun environment to explore
  • Historical and cultural history
  • PT experience
Cons
  • Far from home
  • Away from the people you love back home

Sevilla Summer 2025

Toucan Abroad in Sevilla was one of the best experiences I have ever had. It was a great way to learn more about physical therapy and emerge yourself in a new culture. The PTs were all great, very welcoming, and eager to teach us. Sevilla is also a great city for new travelers. This was my first trip out of the country and the city was easy to navigate, safe, and pretty welcoming to tourists. I had so much fun exploring the city and bonding with the group. I would definitely go again and recommend it to other aspiring PT students.

What was your funniest moment?
I think the River Cruise was one of my favorite memories. The whole group was there listening to fun music, dancing on the boat, and just having a good time. Our group spent so much time together and honestly just made it a good time whenever we were together, which was almost all the time.
Pros
  • Sevilla is a great city with so much to do and explore.
  • You have a good balance of clinic time and down time.
  • There are fun group activities planned and the weekend trips are fun change of pace to explore nearby cities.
Cons
  • Travel can get expensive if you have a far clinic.
  • Siesta can make traveling back from clinic difficult.
  • The city wakes up later so you will have to plan breakfast if you are morning.

Toucan Abroad - Seville Summer 2025

I really enjoyed my experience with Toucan Abroad! It was a great way to get a bunch of shadowing hours, learn new PT techniques, meet and establish connections with new PT’s, and a great way to travel (explore the great city of Seville!! Also Granada and Cadiz) and meet a bunch of new people and lifelong friends! Toucan Abroad is truly one of the best experiences I have ever been apart of, I would recommend this program for any pre-PT looking for some shadow hours or someone who is on the fence for a career field of PT or maybe OT. Super helpful in furthering my career choice and also LOTS OF FUN!!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
When I started the program I was really nervous about traveling overseas by myself and wondering if I knew enough Spanish to really get a good experience out of this program. After going through it now traveling overseas by myself wasn’t bad at all, you can easily communicate with your group and you’ll probably travel on some of the same flights even! Also in regards to not knowing enough spanish over there… all of the clinics I went to were very good at knowing english, and from hearing from some of my classmates if they didn’t know english they were happy to help translate to you using an app. They were also very happy and excited to speak spanish with you if you know it too!
Pros
  • Gaining 60 shadowing hours
  • Getting to travel and explore the awesome city of Seville
  • Meeting so many new friends!!
Cons
  • Spending more money then I had hoped to

Toucan Abroad in Sevilla, Spain

This experience in Sevilla, Spain was one of the most rewarding experiences as a pre-PT student that I have ever done. It was definitely a step out of my comfort zone to travel with completely new people who I’ve never met before and being in a country that I’ve never been in with a language that I can’t speak, but I think getting such an amazing experience out of it despite coming into the trip with all of these unfamiliarities was the best part of Toucan Abroad. I learned so much from the PT clinics in Spain, and not only learned a lot about their work style and culture, but also their social culture and lifestyles of people that live there. The people I traveled with were so fun and kind, and everyone was in the same boat of being out of their comfort zone so it was a great time!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Definitely the most nerve-racking moment was having to communicate with the people there since I didn’t know any Spanish, but I tried my best to communicate with Google Translate, body language, and context clues and people were very reciprocative!
Pros
  • Meeting new people with similar career aspirations
  • New experiences in a foreign country
  • Insight into how the same career works in other countries
Cons
  • Homesickness is a possibility

For anyone wanting to explore the physical therapy profession while also being immersed into a new culture abroad, I highly recommend embarking on this journey with Toucan Abroad. It truly makes a difference being with like-minded individuals who are pursuing the same career. Without question, this program solidified my focus and confirmed my decision to pursue physical therapy as a career.

It is one of the best investments you will ever make as a pre-pt student who is still gaining experience and exploring the profession! Doing this abroad is definitely a plus when it comes to being included and getting involved with hands-on experiences.
