Why did you decide to intern abroad with Global Experiences in London?
Alexandra: I chose to intern abroad with Global Experiences for two reasons mainly. The first reason was driven by my interest in fashion and fashion business. During my undergraduate education, I studied and earned my BA degree in psychology and creative writing, however, I decided later that I wanted to work in the fashion industry. So realizing this, I knew that I had to gain experience in the field before I could start applying to different careers in fashion.
The second reason was because I studied abroad in Florence, Italy the previous semester and fell in love with Europe and traveling, and had a strong desire to return but live somewhere else and learn about another culture. Global Experience offered me a way to satisfy both of my desires – returning to Europe and living in another country while building my resume in my desired field, which in my case was Fashion Public Relations.
What made this experience unique and special?
Alexandra: What made Global Experiences internship differ from previous internships I have had was that there was a nice balance between independence and support. Even though, I felt as though I was independently working, commuting, and living on my own, there were times when I had questions or just simply needed support or advice.
The on location Global Experience advisors were extremely helpful and were always there if I needed advice on all sorts of situations - whether it be a transportation issue, deciding to take an offered position at the firm I was interning at, to where I could find peanut better in London. They were always happy to help with what they could, and they were also very approachable and supportive. Although, I love being independent, it was comforting to have a go-to person to help when I did have a question.
How has this experience impacted your future? (Personally, professionally, academically, etc.)
Alexandra: I do, in fact, believe that this opportunity has greatly impacted my future. Upon my return to the United States, I was offered a job within days of applying to different companies with many employers noticing and remarking on my resume and my international experiences. I accepted a position to work within a couture bridal store to work mainly with high-end evening dress designers.
I have also recently decided to apply to fashion Universities in New York City and London, England to study and hopefully receive a MA in Fashion Business which I will start this fall. I strongly believe that I have a fabulous future ahead of me in the field of fashion, and Global Experience helped give me the tools and experience to feel even more confident in my future endeavors professionally, academically, and personally.
What is one piece of advice you would offer someone considering interning abroad in London?
Alexandra: My one piece of advice I would give to those who are considering interning abroad is to make sure you are dedicated to your area of interest and that you are dedicated to the company you are interning with. It is a full time job being an intern and it is important to keep in mind that although you are learning and gaining experience from your employer, your employer is also relying on you and your dedication and commitment you are making to the company.
However, as long as you keep that in mind, it is completely worth it and you are sure to gain life long business and personal relationships if you work hard and stay positive. I would completely and fully recommend interning with Global Experiences. It was a fabulous experience, and I hope you chose to apply as well and experience it for yourself. Best of luck to you!
