10 weeks in A Coruña, Spain

I am so glad that I chose to participate in this program. Not only have I spent my summer at a beautiful place with absolutely perfect weather, but I can actually feel my progress in Spanish in this condensed period of time, especially on the car ride from and back to the airport. I changed from needing the driver to speak English to being able to understand almost every single word.

I also had the best Spanish teacher who tried to bring fun and experience to our small classes, like playing Spanish cards and having a picnic with traditional food from different cultures.

And Nicole, the program director, offered me a combination of two different internship placements (although both at the same place), which I had a hard time picking only one. And I really, really appreciate this flexibility as it helps me to narrow down my future career goal.

Finally, I also enjoyed the extra trips a lot, and everything feels just right.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would choose to stay with a local family instead of students as young people are pretty accustomed to speak English, which leaves me less time to practice when I am at home. But to be honest, the 3 hr Spanish classes are quite sufficient.
Pros
  • Improve the ability to speak and listen to Spanish A LOOT
  • The BEST weather (around 23 C by day)
  • awsome food (delicious and healthy)
Cons
  • could be a bit exhausting some times (especially that internships are 5 hrs everyday
  • cost is kind of high

Incredible Experience - 5 Week Stay in A Coruña

This summer, I participated in the 5 week A Coruña, Spain internship program which gave me the perfect opportunity to progress in my spanish-speaking abilities and overall grow as a person. I really wanted to find a program abroad that focused on immersion and also allowed me to get work experience, and this program more than offered both. I stayed in an apartment with other spanish speakers and interned with a local lawyer that gave me invaluable first-hand legal experience. I even went to a trial on my first day! The city is the perfect size (I was able to walk everywhere), and although it is not always the warmest, the proximity of the beaches to my apartment was amazing. The program leaders offered incredible support, both before and during the experience, and the organized trips were a nice addition to my weekly routine. Overall, I would definitely recommend this experience and will always remember it.

LH Summer in Spain

Going into this experience, especially still as a high schooler, I was very nervous. But Nicole was so helpful and great at easing my nerves! The programs staff helped me sort everything out when my bag got lost, when my internship wasn’t a good fit, and with anything else I could’ve needed during my time spent in Spain. A Coruña is a great place with nice beaches and lots to do. One of my favorite things was getting to explore the city with the other students in the program. The only thing I would change about my experience is that I went for 10 weeks instead of 5!!

What was your funniest moment?
I got along with the other students in the program really well!! Our funniest moment would be when we went to Domus, which is an interactive science museum. There were so many things to do and they had all of us laughing.
Pros
  • Self growth and discovery
  • Learning language
  • Making new friends
Cons
  • Away from home

Check 'Study Abroad' off my bucket list!

I got so much more than I anticipated from this experience!! If I could rate it higher, I would. Nicole provided so much support, before, during and even after the trip. I traveled back in 2015, alone, and I felt safe the entire trip and loved every moment of my time there. One of the best experiences of my life, and I couldn't have done it without Nicole's help. Everything was so well planned and yet I was able to make my spontaneous decisions as well. If you're waiting for a sign, THIS IS IT. Buy the ticket, take the trip, get on the plane, your time is now!

Sincerely,
A new mom who won't be traveling anywhere any time soon.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Went to Pamplona, this city is famous for the running of the bulls during the San Fermín festival, (held annually from 6 July to 14 July.)

10-Week Stay in A Coruña, Spain

I spent 10 weeks in A Coruña, Spain, and it was an amazing experience. The weather was nice and a little rainy which made exploring the city enjoyable. A Coruña offers a great blend of urban environment with the added bonus of beautiful beach sunsets. Despite the cold ocean water, the beaches were a highlight of my time there and the sunsets were beautiful. The veterinary internship I participated in was particularly rewarding, providing valuable hands-on experience that deepened my understanding of the field. Additionally, I had the opportunity to study Spanish with excellent professors, which significantly improved my language skills. Santiago de Compostela was another highlight of the trip. The city's history and cathedral were both very impressive.

Best summer program ever!

I had a blast this summer thanks to Linguistic Horizons! A Coruña is a beautiful and safe beach city with delicious food and nice people. Nicole set up an interesting internship, a fantastic spanish class with only one other student which meant very hands-on teaching, and great social activities. I still stay in contact with the people I met at the language exchange event set up through linguistic horizons. I couldn’t have had a better time, thanks again nicole! I will also note that public transportation is easy to navigate and cheap.

Pros
  • Great location
  • Good spanish teachers
  • Great housing
Cons
  • Its a little rainy sometimes
  • Hard to go outside the city (though theres no real reason to)

Pre-Vet Internship and Spanish Course as a Native Spanish Speaker

I chose this program due to reading a positive review! So, here is my honest review!! I HIGHLY recommend Linguistic Horizons for your study abroad experience here is why...

This summer I participated in a pre-vet internship with A Chico Centro Quirúrgico, a Veterinary Clinic in La Coruña, organized by Linguistic Horizons. It was an incredible learning experience that allowed me to gain valuable insights into the field of veterinary medicine and improve my Spanish language skills.

This was my first time traveling abroad and arriving somewhere not knowing anyone. I made so many new friends, quickly learned how to get around the city, and felt safe the whole time. Nicole is so friendly and sweet and definitely helped the whole experience go smoothly. She has organized an incredible program that even when she had an emergency and had to leave the country, the program continued to flow smoothly! I highly recommend this program to anyone interested in a study abroad opportunity. My host family was so sweet and hospitable. They became my family and support system while abroad and were attentive to anything I needed!

I wasn't sure if the Spanish course would be challenging, but it was the first time I'd taken a Spanish course that taught me something new in almost every class. The conversational style of the course was so valuable, that I genuinely looked forward to my Spanish classes as well as our field trips. This was the first time I ever did a presentation in Spanish too, which was really exciting!

During my internship, I had the chance to observe various aspects of veterinary practice, including diagnosis, laboratory work, ultrasounds, surgical preparation, and more. These experiences were not typically a part of my job back home, making the internship even more valuable. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of involvement I had during my internship. I learned how to intubate, assisted with a dental cleaning, and even had the opportunity to assist in the operating room for surgery. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply my knowledge and skills in a real-world setting. Thanks to my personal passion and go-getter personality, I was able to get the most out of this experience.

This internship not only deepened my passion for veterinary medicine but also instilled in me the importance of being able to confidently and accurately practice medicine in Spanish. As I continue to learn more about veterinary medicine, I am committed to also learning it in Spanish, thanks to the invaluable experience provided by Linguistic Horizons.

I am unbelievably grateful to Linguistic Horizons for organizing such a wonderful program. I hope to have another similar experience in the future, and I highly recommend Linguistic Horizons to anyone seeking a unique and enriching study abroad opportunity.

Pros
  • Safe and small city
  • Beautiful beaches but also a city with a rich history
  • Kind, honest, and friendly staff and teachers
Cons
  • Windy and sometimes cold (70's)
  • Slight challenge eating out if you are vegetarian/vegan but there definitely are options and you can always cook at home.
