Is it impossible to teach English in Korea as an Asian, even though I have experience in teaching English in other countries?

teaching as an Asian in Daegu, South Korea (the city in which I live) is rare but those teachers exist. I know of two teachers with Korean backgrounds in "native speaker" jobs and one teacher who is from China. One of these teachers told me that there were hogwan's/private schools which did reject him because he is not white, but he did eventually find a job.

I know eleven African-American teachers.

I am Caucasian myself, but there were 2 or 3 out of 7 Asian English teachers at our training conference, and my director just hired a Chinese English teacher two months ago. I don't know if this is uncommon or not given that I am an inexperienced English teacher, but from what I have seen, it is definitely possible.

Hi Wai Yee,

It is certainly possible if you are of Asian descent and from one of the 7 countries that Korea will grant a working visa to. If you are not from one of those countries, unfortunately you won't be granted a visa though, even though you speak perfect English and have experience teaching.

I hope this helps!
