Excellent Program! Highly recommend!

I did the immersive Spanish program for 8 weeks with group classes in the morning and private classes in the afternoon. I would highly recommend the program! I noticed a significant improvement in my Spanish level. The instructors were very helpful and supportive with teaching the language and customized the lessons based on our levels and interests. The administrators and staff were also very helpful and easy to work with. I also did the home stay with a local family which I would also recommend. The family was very accommodating and my stay there forced me to improve my Spanish. Overall a great experience!

Immersion experience

I attended three weeks of Spanish classes at Tico Lingo in February 2021 and I had a wonderful time.

I was a total beginner, having never learnt any Spanish before, I knew hola and si, and not much else. Whilst it was very challenging at times, trying to learn as much as possible in the short amount of time I was there, Erick was a great teacher. He was very patient and helped me to grab a good understanding of the basics. I was able to make real improvement during my time at Tico Lingo.

We were also able to organise weekend trips with some of the other students, to the volcano and hot springs at La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio National Park. Some of us even met up later in Santa Teresa, for some fun and Spanish practice on the beach.

One of the highlights of the experience was my Homestay family, Sindy and Claudio. They welcomed me into their home and treated me like one of the family. They took a real interest in my Spanish progress, helping me outside of classes, over conservation at dinner and movie nights (in Spanish). They even celebrated my birthday, surprising me with a birthday cake, even though I had only been there for a few days.

It was a great place to learn and I highly recommend Tico Lingo. Thank you Chris, Yennifer and Erick!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
On the weekends, go and explore! Don't be afraid of using public transport (something I was initially hesitant about) but everyone is so friendly and it's rather easy to figure out routes and times (even for someone with my limited Spanish knowledge).

Ideal introduction to Costa Rica and learning Spanish

I initially planned to do one week of Spanish and homestay at Tico Lingo, but I enjoyed it so much I ended up staying for four!

For me, this was an ideal introduction to my trip to Central America. I was able to improve my Spanish, learn about Costa Rica from my homestay family and hang out with other students from the school.

I was in the middle class in the school, Kevin was a great teacher helping us to improve our conversational Spanish, learning grammar, expressing past and present tenses and some handy Tico phrases! Staying in a homestay was great, feeling like part of the family and practicing your Spanish outside of school.

We also organised some trips with other students from the school which was great fun, visiting La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio, also catching up with the guys again in Santa Theresa after we'd finished studying for some time chilling on the beach

Thanks for everything Chris, Yennifer, Maritiza, Kevin and Freddie!

What was your funniest moment?
I told my homestay dad I'd seen bears in the trees in Manuel Antonio. Sloth in Spanish is Oso Perezoso (literally Lazy Bear). I tried to just shorten it to Oso, which is bear. They don't even have bears here. He was very confused!

Awesome classes!

I studied with Tico Lingo for three weeks in January of 2021. I learned a ton of Spanish and am absolutely way more conversational now, and have a lot of tools to continue to teach myself. I stayed with a host family and was able to continue to learn and practice every night when I went home, and experience authentic Costa Rican culture. My host family was very sweet and genuinely cared about my success in Costa Rica. The school staff was very helpful to any questions I had about Costa Rica, Spanish, and anything else that came up. All around, a great experience.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I wish I had explored the public transit a bit more! I was a bit scared at first to take a bus and just explore, but when I tried that, I had a really great time and saw some very cool things.

Effective and enjoyable learning and living

I’ve tried emersion Spanish school before but this one worked. ( more of a science than language person) Why did Tico Lingo work for me?
1. Program and small classes tailored to my goals.
2. Made learning fun - I m now studying/ reviewing nearly every day on my own due my experience.
3. Supportive social environment- positive and ecouraging feedback from teachers, staff that was echoed by my host family and even townsfolk- Ticos, especially away from resort towns are more likely to tolerate my broken Spanish so I get to speak more and practice.
4. Extra activities like yoga and intercambio with local English speakers.
5. Gave me usage and details that were hard to find online and absent from my previous in person classes.

A great place to learn - I’m on the road now and sufficiently functional gain momentum.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I got to try several tropical fruits, including some varieties of citrus fruits that I have never seen before. Also the pineapples were very flavorful.

Great Experience with Tico Lingo

I loved my experience with Tico Lingo. They make it easy to learn spanish in a comfortable environment. From offering transportation directly from the airport to our homestay, to giving a tour of Heredia, I felt great attending classes. The best part of my three week experience was learning from Freddy, a teacher there. He provided tailored instruction that was incredibly well-organized. He made it fun as well and gave us a lot of advice about our travels around the country of Costa Rica. The Tico Lingo facilities were clean and modern, with fresh coffee every morning. Another activity that was surprisingly great was the Intercambio nights on Thursdays, when Ticos would come to practice their English while we practiced our Spanish.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
We got our rental car stuck on a giant hill! Whoops!

My camp in Costa Rica

I learned way more Spanish doing this camp than I did in highschool. Speaking with natives really makes a difference. My family was amazing and the Spanish classes we're pretty intense but we were challenged and my classmates enjoyed it. It was just an overall great positive experience. I'm over 18 now, but I'd love to go back and sign up for the adult program. The teen camp was everything i needed to get used to living in a new place. There was so much support from the staff. Activities were fun, I liked the cooking classes with Profesora Helen! My teacher Oscar was so so cool. We still stay in touch on Whatsapp and he helps e with Spanish questions when I have them. Would highly recommend this camp to anyone looking for an adventure and wanting to drastically improve their Spanish speaking skills. Gracias!

Such and awesome experience!! Want to go back!!

I did this camp in 2019 and loved loved loved it! I was planning on going in 2020, but... the pandemic didn't allow for it. I loved meeting students from all over the world, learning spanish in this cool little costa rica town, doing all the activities. Dance class was actually pretty fun. I learned so so so much more Spanish than I learned in a whole year of highschool Spanish 2. It's like a completely different experience when you're living with a family and needing to speak the language to ask for something to eat! lol. I hope I can go back in 2021. Miss my homestay family and my teacher and heredia! pura vida tico lingo is awesome!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
on our first day we had to try new fruits we had never seen. I picked one that looked like a passion fruit but it was called a Granadiya. IT was delicious!! :)

Surpassed Expectations

I went from zero to 10 in 4 weeks!

I loved absolutely everything about my time in Costa Rica. It is difficult to put in to words all the extra benefits I experienced from what I imagined was just another Spanish immersion program in Latin America. I was so wrong! The biggest take away from Tico Lingo was that I felt that my language leaning goal mattered to all the staff as much as it did to me. It appeared that everything was carefully designed to support me to where I wanted to be. I can now say that I am confidently communicating in Spanish!

THE MOST AMAZING SPANISH SCHOOL IN HISTORY OF MANKIND!!!!!

This school is hands down the best place on earth to learn Spanish! I had never had so much fun learning a new language, they have an amazing program and everyone treats you like they've known you since forever, its a super welcoming place. AGAIN... when I say hands down I mean way down... I can't recommend TicoLingo enough I loved the entire experience, all the way from the airport pickup, to my home-stay family welcoming me in their home, to the actual Spanish classes, to the amazing tours I was able to do in Costa Rica. Costa Rica is an amazing Country and TicoLingo has certainly picked a great and centric spot to be in. If you are looking for a Spanish immersion program like no other TicoLingo has you covered!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
The only thing I'd change is actually staying longer, that's the one thing I regret, I went for 1-month and it just was not enough! I wanted more, and did not want to leave. Right now I'm saving up to be able to go again!
