I came into the course knowing very little about teaching English, and I left having learned a lot about effective teaching methodologies and techniques. What stood out most for me were the Observed Teaching Practices. I had the opportunity to teach six classes across a range of proficiency levels and age groups—from kindergarten kids to young adults.

Honestly, my first lesson didn’t go well—but by the end, I was teaching working adults in a corporate setting, and Vantage’s lead trainer called that final lesson “professional quality.” That kind of progress speaks volumes about the quality of the training.

I did my pre-course research, where I visited 5 different TEFL programs in the Bangkok area with a list of questions.

What really stuck out about Vantage was the amount of observed teaching practice I would do as an integral part of their course. For each of the six practice classes I taught, I first had to develop a lesson plan, source my materials, and then deliver the class in a Thai classroom.

I had the pleasure of doing my training at Vantage in Bangkok. I was pleasantly surprised as Vantage has given me deeper insight into not just the English language, but also how to create effective lesson plans. From the course, I understood why English can be difficult for students because what we do consciously and subconsciously was covered.

I had a comprehensive though intensive learning experience. The course covers so much more than just English grammar. Coupled with the teaching practices in actual classrooms, I was given the chance to try and apply what I learned. That’s how I think is the best way to internalize skill sets and handle dynamic environments. I got over my initial fear of standing in front of a group to speak, let alone teach.

I get to take away a lifelong qualification and a skill. The instructors were thorough with the necessary preparation that goes into teaching. On top of just covering content, you will also have work to do in order to thoroughly complete the course. The program is excellent designed, well thought-out and I would absolutely recommend it to other aspiring teachers.

From day one, I felt like the entire Vantage team was devoted to realizing my aspirations of becoming a teacher. They covered everything I needed to feel comfortable in this uncertain career transition.

While I took the 20-unit coursebook online through their Combined Course, I was also allowed to attend their In-Class TEFL sessions. It’s the same coursebook for both TEFL programs, but the quality of the trainers—with their decades of experience—really augmented the curriculum.

My observed teaching practices were where I really became competent in the classroom. Teaching theory, through practical application, became the skill set I needed to be successful in the classroom.

My six practice classes spanned young, secondary-aged, and adult English learners—across different English proficiency levels.

Vantage’s course also had Thai cultural sessions which not only prepare you for life in Thailand but importantly, the “do’s and don’ts” to use in a Thai classroom.

Vantage also has a dedicated Jobs Coach. We had a Power Resume session that adapted my current CV to appeal to Thai employers in the education sector. There is a substantial difference between England and Thailand in regard to what they want on CVs so this was invaluable. Vantage also offered advice on location, and schools, and even recommended me to specific English education providers who place qualified teachers in scores of schools throughout the Kingdom.

My bottom line? Go with Vantage! Especially if you’re thinking about making a career teaching English.

I initially took Vantage’s Combined Course, which involves completing the 20-unit coursebook online and then Observing Teaching Practices (OTPs) in a real school with non-English-speaking students.

Vantage allowed me to sit into their In-Class Course before I did my actual OTPs. While the coursebook is very good, there is a big difference when that same curriculum is delivered by trainers who have decades of experience in the classroom.

The practice teaching part of the course stood out. I got the opportunity to teach at different schools, and now have experience with many different age groups and language proficiency levels. I felt I got better with each practice teaching session. I taught. I really grew in my confidence in managing a classroom.

All six of our OTPs were organized by Vantage, as well as the logistics of arranging meeting points and transportation to the schools.

The Vantage team has been very supportive throughout my training, giving recommendations, building resumes, etc. Vantage has their own Jobs Coach, who was especially helpful in guiding me after the course had finished in terms of opportunities for job openings which was a big relief as someone a little anxious about starting a new job in a new country.

I can’t recommend Vantage TEFL Certification enough. They guided me every step of the way and really built up my confidence to teach anyone anywhere. If you are looking to get your teaching qualification and start a teaching career, these are the guys to talk to.
