Taught young monks english in a Buddhist monastery

My experience initially was a bit shell shocked. I moved into a room with a shower that had no hot water, and the toilet did not always work. However, I did not come for the luxuries of the Ritz Carlton, I am came for the experience, AND and experience it was. I stayed with an initial host family for a week and learned NEPALI from a wonderful teacher named Pratima. I do wish however that I did not have to spend a week in this place because I was bored after the Nepali lessons and it was not in a part of time particularly interesting. A week later I moved into another host family house, and the situation was much improved because I finally got to meet my students and I was also living in a better location. I liked this second location more because it was in close proximity to monkey temple and also close to the fun downtown district, THAMEL. Again, I was not pleased that I had to take cold showers and that there were power outages at moments.

Meeting and teaching the monks was an awesome experience. I fell in love with all my students. I am not a teacher in the USA, but teaching comes innately to me and being around such sharp, thirsty minds was an honor. It was also a great honor to join them in their ceremonies, and learning about such an old and brilliant culture.

I do not think that the airport fee us justified. It's $50 when I can go to the airport round trip for $20 or less. I also thought that the daily cost of living fee was too high. I could stay in a hotel in Thamel, with hot water for $15 USD and afford to eat anything I want. I was only a mile from the schools. In the future, I will not be staying with a host family as I do not feel I need to have a curfew and eat the same food every day.

In summation, despite some of the negatives, such as cold water, and over priced living costs, I had a magical experience with my students and they touch my heart to this very day. I will not forget the intrinsic and extrinsic beauty of Nepal. I hope to return some day AND I highly insist that every one have this experience.

What would you improve about this program?
I have recommended this program to a friend but I warned him about the shower situation, the early curfew, and the surprise fees such as, getting charged 500 rupees a week from DIDI when I could stay at a hotel and get free internet.

Nice Getaway For Summer

My volunteering experience with my 16 year old twins and their 17 year old friend was amazing. It exited our expectations. South Africa and its people are welcoming and working at the wildlife sanitary was an unforgettable experience. Global Crossroad and its country support staff were the best; always caring for us and making sure that everything was done as planned. I recommend the trip to anyone who loves wildlife and want to experience South Africa.

It was a magical place. Weather, people, animals were amazing. It is hard to explain in words one must come and see the beauty of SA and its wonderful animals. The conservation project was very helpful and I learned a lot while meeting new friends from all over the world.

I would very much like to come to South Africa sometime again in the future.

What would you improve about this program?
The project was only associated with five animals, I would hope for more and more animals in the future.

The Project was a Success

I was in Galle, Sri Lanka. I volunteered at a temple and taught English to the monks. I really enjoyed my stay in Michael's house. He and his family were very helpful to me. I would recommend there to any volunteer who is planning to stay in Galle.

My project started the next day of my arrival. The monks were very open-minded and they really wanted to listen to me and what I had to say. I had a connection with them from the first day. I was happy to teach them and they also seemed very happy to have me as their teacher.

Even though the time was short, I can confidently say that the project was a success because I went ahead of what was mentioned on my responsibilities.

I met so many beautiful people outside of the temple and the host family as well. I'm very happy that decided to be a Volunteer in Sri Lanka through Global Crossroad.

What would you improve about this program?
During the orientation Volunteers can be made aware about the lesson planning and expectations of what to do prior to the placement. I would have also enjoyed a Travel Program (around Sri Lanka) after the completion of my project.

Expect The Unexpected

Everyone at Global Crossroad was always extremely helpful. They were knowledgeable about any questions or concerns I had. The Spanish classes were very interactive and the teacher was great. He did a superb job of teaching!

The living condition was also very good, with excellent meals and always more than enough food. The host family was very wonderful! The meals were prepared with care. I'm a vegetarian and was very satisfied with all my meals. They were very accommodating to my needs.

I really enjoyed my volunteering experience at the School in Peru. I thought I was going to work with student from grade 1-5; but I was placed to teach the students from grade 6 to 8. It wasn't what I expected but it turned out to be great. I must say I was a little nervous at first.

Overall, everything was great; therefore I recommend Global Crossroad programs in Peru to all.

What would you improve about this program?
My flight was about one hour late arriving in Cusco. Therefore, I was not picked up at the airport. I had to take a taxi and I was overcharged but did not realize it at the time. Perhaps let others know what they would pay a taxi if the pickup does not occur.

Highly Recommended Trip

My time in Sri Lanka was well spent. Michael was a fantastic host who connected me with a rewarding volunteering experience. This volunteering experience gave me the opportunity to learn and witness the medicine works in Sri Lanka. The hospital is big, all the doctors in there are very helpful and they did let me help them with sutures, surgeries, examine patients.
Highly recommended experience. I will definitely be back.

What would you improve about this program?
The program was excellent; I do not have anything to say. However I did found the hospital overcrowded at times, patience were waiting on the line.

My first weeks in school

I´m Julia, 20 years old and I work in Cusco for eight weeks. The most time of a day I spend in a catholic school, where I help the english teachers in class. I work there with children between six and seventeen. So it never get´s boring. In the afternoon, when I´m not too tired, I also work in the orphanage, which is only separated by a door to the school. There I am with the children and take care of them, while the mothers, for example, do their homework. After work, I´m free to discover the city or do what I want. At the weekend I also have enough time to get to know the country.
In the family I live in, are two other volunteers and we´re spending much time together. It is like a family and after work, I feel like coming home. When I have some questions, I can ask anybody and I have always been helped.
Let´s see, what the next five weeks will bring.

Great Medical Volunteering Experience in Argentina

I enjoyed the program very much, and the staff here has been very accommodating and helpful. Additionally, I learned a lot about the Argentinean health system and functions. Spanish lessons were great. The hospital was a bit difficult in the beginning because we could not understand a lot. I improved a lot over the 4 weeks of my stay. I really loved the host mom. She was so sweet and kind! Everything was greatly arranged and if you had any problems you could always talk to the members from Global Crossroad. They are doing a wonderful job

What would you improve about this program?
While I am aware that observation is a large part of the experience, I do hope that mixing it with more hands on experience would make this program even better.

Medical Program in Nepal

Me and my friend went to Nepal with the intention of Volunteering in A Medical Program and Exploring the culture. I must say both of our intention was well met through Global Crossroad Program. We really enjoyed our stay in Nepal. We had a teacher to teach us Nepalese Language and Culture. This was very helpful. The hospital was a bit difficult in the beginning because we could not understand a lot. We improved a lot over the 4 weeks of our stay. We feel very fortunate to have learned about the health care system in Nepal and all about the culture. We really loved our host mom. She was so sweet and an Amazing Cook!

Everything was arranged well and you could always talk to the members from Global Crossroad. They are doing a wonderful job!

What would you improve about this program?
This program should have more medical equipment and resources. If so I believe we would have been able to reach more individuals in need. I would also say that proper arrangements made though Global Crossroad for volunteers to reach and help out the people in the most needing communities of Nepal would be great not only for the communities but also for the volunteers.

Teaching English Program in India

It was a real experience to say the least. I enjoyed volunteering in India a lot. I participated in the Teaching English program. My responsibility was teaching English to grade 4 - 8 students. The students were lovely and eager to learn. The principal and some of the teachers were very nice.

The host family was great. Rajan’s house was very nice and the food was very good. Getting a chance to visit Delhi, Jaipur and Taj Mahal during my visit was also great.

Highly recommended trip!!!

What would you improve about this program?
Proper ambient and awareness will definitely make this program even better.

Medial & Orphanage Program in Peru

This past summer (2018) our son and nephew volunteered through the Global Cross Roads program in Peru. From the beginning we knew this would be great. Mr. Mohan spent a long time explaining to us how this would work and how the kids would be taken care of. After registration there was follow up and we were connected with Mr. Roger, the local lead for the program in Peru. And Roger, one word: FABULOUS. We couldn't have had a great experience if not from him. He handled it all for the kids, pick up at the airport, juggle things when the flight got cancelled, take them to the host family and what a gracious host. Roger showed up early next day in morning to explain to the kids their activities how to get from one point to other in Cusco, checked with the kids at lunch etc. etc. He is an example of selfless service who continues to give to the Cusco community and inspires others to do so. He made arrangements for the weekend trip to Machu Picchu and even for that made sure even was safe and taken care of.

The program itself was great and the kids learnt a lot about another country, to take care of themselves and more importantly to take care of others. Thanks for providing the opportunity.
