Not really immersion program

My child stated they actually spent 90% of this trip talking in English which was unfortunate since the teens discussions were in their home language which made up most of the great majority of the communication during the trip. It also seemed in this particular group- many of the participants were self absorbed rich kids there for the wrong reasons- which unfortunately can happen with expensive programs like these. The managers of the program do their best and kudos to the staff for having a VERY difficult job. Creating "groups of 3" to do projects certainly didn't work well in this case as social scheme which occurs in high school also occured here with "popular kids" shutting out quiter kids that didn't bow to the Queen Bees of the group. I just wish it had been a better experience. We have done Outward Bound in the past and team inner workings and group dynamics were better managed.

Response from Global Works

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re truly sorry to hear that your student's experience in France did not meet expectations, and we appreciate you taking the time to let us know.

At Global Works, our goal is to create meaningful travel and immersion experiences where students feel supported, included, and challenged to grow. We understand your concern regarding the amount of English spoken on the trip. While it’s common for students to connect in their shared language, we strive to design opportunities—through homestays, local interactions, and structured language activities—that encourage immersion. That said, we are continuously looking at ways to strengthen the immersion component and will be reviewing this group’s dynamic to see how we can improve.

We also take group culture and social dynamics seriously. Fostering an inclusive, respectful environment is central to our staff training and trip structure, and we regret that this wasn't fully realized in your group. Our team works hard to create safe, positive experiences for every student, and your insights help us do better. If you’re open to it, we’d welcome a conversation to learn more about your perspective and how we can improve going forward.

This was amazing

I I traveled on the Costa Rica wildlife adventure program It was an amazing experience. It was eye-opening and thoughtful. The program consisted of so many fun adventures, such as zip lining surfing, saving sea turtles, helping rangers at Poco sol, and finding new best friends! Along with all our fun activities, the leaders were beyond amazing. They supported and helps the group no matter what, along with making it super fun! I also had a great relationship with every kid on the trip. We were able to bond and play cards and hang out and have so many new inside jokes. The strip helped build my self-confidence put out of my social skills. I love to meet the new people and along with discovering more about animals and the culture in Costa Rica. Thank you Global Works for this experience!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Go on this trip! Be bold and don’t be nervous everyone on the trip wants to be friends with you!
Pros
  • Saw so many animals, and learned about every single one
  • Eye opening to the world: I was able to learn and make a new appreciation for my home + help small towns and people who needed service
  • New friendships
Cons
  • Bug bites
  • Clothes getting dirty
  • Cold showers

Wildlife, Service, Adventure: A Life-Changing Experience with Global Works in Costa Rica

I just got back from Global Works’ Costa Rica Wildlife Adventure and, no joke, it was the best experience ever. Every morning felt like its own Discovery Channel episode: one day we were tracking sea-turtle nests, the next we were hanging 200 feet above the cloud forest on zip-lines. The service projects were real work, too. I helped rebuild jungle trails and prepped food for rescued howler monkeys at Proyecto Asis. Our leaders were legit pros (and hilarious), so even when we were walking through mud, clearing invasive plants, I never felt unsafe or bored. My Spanish skills improved too. By the time we hit the rapids in a river rafting adventure, our group of strangers felt like family. I came home with a ton of new friends, a bunch of service hours, and a way bigger sense of what it means to protect the planet. If you want adventure that actually matters, go Global Works.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Watching a 300-pound green sea turtle glide onto the beach, and then helping biologists tag, measure, and protect her fresh nest, felt like stepping into a live-action nature documentary.
Pros
  • Hands-On Conservation: Rebuilding rainforest trails and caring for rescued monkeys made the service feel genuinely impactful.
  • Epic Adventure Line-Up: Zip-lining the cloud forest and white-water rafting kept the adrenaline pumping.
  • Tight-Knit Crew & Spanish Boost: Small group size meant instant friendships and real-world Spanish practice (my vocab skyrocketed).

I went on a school trip to Costa Rica!

In April of 2023, I went to Costa Rica with a bunch of kids from my school. There was about 60 kids in total and we were often divided into groups of 30 for days. When we flew in, we were warmly greeted and immediately taken to our first place where we began and ended the trip. The next morning we were divided in two groups each of which went to separate places for multiple days. My group got in a bus for 3ish hours heading for a preserved wildlife forest. We stopped to eat lunch where we were served amazing food and had the opportunity to shop at our pitstop. After this, we got to the top of the forest where we had to hike downhill for 3+ miles to reach our lodge which was only accessible by foot. The lodge was beautiful with the most of amazing sunrise (don't miss out!) and we were served traditional foods (the fruit was amazing) on all the days. During those few days in the secluded lodge we were split into groups and we helped build stairs in the forest and we went on night hikes and looked for cool animals. At the lodge there was no hot water but this was not a con because you have to expect things like this in a place so secluded. On the morning we were going to hike back uphill the way we came, I threw up from the water I had drank but this was my fault because I think I accidentally drank a bit of water not specifically given by them. We then traveled to a very nice place where we stayed for the rets of the trip until the last day. The other 30 kids that weren't in my group apparently cleaned a river and other activities but we never did what they did or vice versa. When we were reuinited we spent our days volunteering at a school (painting chairs, helping out in classrooms, and so on). The place we stayed at was amazing and there was a pool, soccer fields, amazing food and we had a lot of freedom. We were also given the chance to shop at a cute town and go to an animal rescue center. In general, this was an amazing trip adn we got over 24 hours of community service!

Puerto Rico Service Trip Review

I really enjoyed going on the service trip. I was able to meet many people from many different walks of life. It was interesting to compare and contrast how different people went about different situations, both socially and personally. The housing was great, aside from a lack of hot water sometimes. Food was good, considering I am a vegetarian, and I was still able to find things to eat. Counselors were very relatable, which also added some more intrigue to the thing as a whole. Overall, the experience was great.

Costa Rican Summer Service

This past summer, my cousin Ana and I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a Costa Rican summer service volunteer program, and it was honestly one of the most enriching experiences of our lives. We had initially chosen this program because we were excited about the chance to surf in Costa Rica – but the service component turned out to be the highlight of our trip.

From the beginning, we felt supported and welcomed by our program leaders, who were not only super fun but also great mentors. They created an environment where we could learn, grow, and genuinely connect with the local community. Their energy and passion for the work they were doing made everything even more impactful, and we learned so much from them both on and off the field.

The best part of the experience, though, was staying with local families in the community. The warmth and hospitality they showed us were beyond anything we expected, and living with them truly changed my perspective on life. The bonds we formed were so strong that I’m happy to say I still keep in touch with the family I stayed with, which has been such a rewarding connection to maintain.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I saw was the different birds and animals while rafting. It was one of the best experiences of the program.

Costa Rica Service Review

The Costa Rica service adventure was amazing and definitely the highlight of my summer! I did not want to leave the great friends, leaders, and community I found by the end of the trip. I know I will have these memories for the rest of my life including, hanging out at the beautiful beaches with the new friends I made and sitting in hammocks on top of a huge mountain playing guitar and singing songs. Arriving there I was very sad and scared to leave my home and by the end I felt the same but I had a new meaning of home.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
One thing I would change if I did this again was try to make friends and put myself out there faster. At first I was very nervous so I was more closed off however towards the end of the trip after I started to relax and be myself I wasn’t ready to leave the people I met.
Pros
  • The people and connections I made
  • Surfing was so fun!
  • The animals and nature.

10/10 from someone who gets really nervous traveling

I was initially pretty nervous to go on this trip, I've never done anything like it before, so I was totally blind when committing to this. On the first drive from the airport to the hotel I sat next to someone who I became great friends with and we literally sat next to each other every bus drive for the next two weeks. I met some really cool people and there was always something to talk about.
I think the best thing about a trip like this is that it really pushed me outside my comfort zone in a lot of ways.Yet there was still a lot of structure and support from the counselors, who were all incredibly nice and were incredible at communicating with everyone and making sure we were having a good experience. I learned so much and I would really encourage people to try it out even if they're nervous because it was a truly amazing experience.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
In a random bus ride we saw Scarlet Macaws flying along with the bus. It was crazy. I also saw a Pap smear while shadowing a doctor at the clinic.

Costa Rica is the goat fr

So I went to the pre med program and it honestly was the best summer of my entire life, we were given very interesting lessons about first aids, ate delicious food and made good friends. As a latino, this helped me to practice my english, and to be a sort of bridge between the american and latin american culture, which I enjoyed a lot. Leaving the cultural part aside, I am really thankful for the experiences I had at the clinic and at the first aids course, because I realized that I am truly into medicine.

What was your funniest moment?
We went rafting and damn we had to rescue all of the crew LMAO it was fun
Pros
  • I met people from different states and cities of the US.
  • I learned A LOT about first aids
  • I realized that studying medicine is the right path for me

Global Works Costa Rica Service Adventure: the adventure of a lifetime

I loved this trip and would remember for the rest of my life. Getting to do service, meeting incredible people, and seeing part of the world that I haven’t been to, made this trip a great experience.
The leaders were high energy, friendly, people I admire. I felt welcome from the first moment I met them. They were one of the reasons that the trip was as exceptional as it was.
We had a travel issue due to the airline, but the Global Works team was fantastic at helping us navigate through it. They made this challenge stress free and supported us every step of the way.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
One of the most nerve-racking moment was when our flight got canceled because that was the day of the airline cyber attack. The Global Works team helped us find an alternative flight. They sent someone to meet us at the airport and tour us around while we waited for an opportunity to reconnect with the group.
Pros
  • Friendships
  • Activities
  • Service
