Costa Rica Pre-Med: Student Review

Yes, yes, yes! Would I recommend going on this experience? YES! Intro to pre-med through global works is something I never knew I needed to experience. Thanks to global works not only did I get more insight into the career of my dreams, but also get to experience a whole other country, and its culture at the same time. I am forever thankful for global works, the staff on my trip, and all the friends I met along the way. You helped make my summer truly amazing. Can’t wait to go back. PURA VIDAAA!

Pros
  • People are friendly
  • Great instructors

I Loved My Costa Rica Global Works Trip!

I was initially nervous to go on this trip, as I hadn't done a lot of traveling with out my parents before, but when I met my group and group leaders, that all went away. The group leaders were amazing, they had everything under control and running smoothly every step of the way, no matter what was thrown at them. They were simply amazing and I felt confident even when way out of my comfort zone the whole time because they were there. The other kids were very open, and it was easy to make friends, especially with the no cell phones policy, which really helped us bond to another level. During the homestay, I really felt like I made a connection with the community, and became a part of their family for the days we were there. Actually being in the rainforest and among all that wildlife rekindled a passion for conservation, as I was able to see what needs to be saved up close. The community service was difficult but rewarding, and we were able to gain a new perspective, as though my home stay family had less material wealth than my family, the connections of their community were so much richer, and there was a much happier air to them than I find in my neighborhood. The last day was very bittersweet when we had to leave the friends we had made, and by the end, while I was glad to go home, I knew I would return as I feel like I have made a lasting connection with this beautiful country.

Pros
  • Super fun
  • Made lasting connections
  • Learned about culture and community

Fiji was awesome

I loved this trip so much!! I had never left the east coast before this trip so I was very nervous to be leaving the country for 2 weeks with people I didn’t know. The staff was very friendly and made me feel welcome immediately. I had a great group of people and by the second day they felt like family. Living in the village was definitely the highlight of the trip, I loved helping the community and playing with the kids. It was a great experience and I definitely recommend to everyone. Greatest trip ever!!

The best trip ever!

This was my second global works trip and it did not disappoint. I previously did the France Immersion trip and I did not think it could get any better, but it did! The scenery and environment will be images that will stick with me for the rest of my life as the beauty of every place we stayed and discovered is indescribable. The communities we stayed with were some of the most welcoming people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and I know my fellow global works travelers are people I will stay in touch with for the rest of my life. The bonds created, the experiences we had, and the amazing lessons and outlooks learned are things I would never trade for the world and highly recommend for anyone considering this program. While it may be scary at the beginning, every other student is probably feeling the same thing and you end up supporting each other and leaving the trip becomes the most dreadful thing you can imagine. This trip was just an absolutely incredible experience for me and I highly recommend to anyone willing to put themselves out there!

Trip of a lifetime- 10/10 experience

I signed up for this trip looking for a fun experience and the opportunity to meet new, interesting people. In my reflection of this trip, I could not be more thankful for the opportunities and new outlook that this trip provided me with. There was never a boring moment with the incredible group I traveled with, and everyday felt rewarding. The counselors were wonderful and ensured we were always safe, but also comfortable in our surroundings. It is a new and unfamiliar setting at times, but it's a great way to step outside of the comfort zone while. The hikes, the views, the crystal-clear oceans- it was all perfect. It seemed that every 5 minutes my group was expressing our love and gratitude for this wonderful paradise we were in. The Fijians we met and stayed with are the most generous and loving people I have ever met. The children on the island were a pure expression of joy and their happiness was so contagious. I received my scuba certification on this trip as well, which was initially intimidating, but overall fun process. The instructors were understanding and comforting, they rid me of any worries before going down on a dive and made me feel safe at all times. The marine life was beautiful and unlike anything I've ever seen before. The memories and bonds I formed on this trip will be held close to my heart forever. Some of the highlights of the trip included zip-lining, going to the fresh fruit/vegetable markets, hikes with spectacular views, preparing a meal with the Fijian elders, and teaching lessons at the local school. I can not express my love for this trip enough, and hope that you get to experience this paradise as well.
Some pieces of advice I have for anyone choosing this trip:
-Be comfortable with being uncomfortable at times.
-Don't be scared to try new things
- Live in the moment as it'll pass before you know it

Pros
  • new, exciting experiences
  • beautiful wildlife and connection to nature
  • interacting with Fijians, who have genuinely beautiful hearts
Cons
  • occasionally rustic housing
  • cold showers

Once in a Lifetime - in Puerto Rico

My daughter participated in the Hurricane Relief program in Puerto Rico with Global Works and it was transformative. She learned so much about the culture, history and ecology of PR and had an amazing experience -mostly because she was able to truly contribute to the cause set forth by the program. She felt that the work she was doing was worthwhile and the leaders were excellent. The work performed by the group was challenging at times but very satisfying for her. She would definitely do this again!

Pros
  • The experience for serving others
  • The activities planned for the group
  • Learning about the culture - people, food, etc.

Great experience

During her time in San Juan, my daughter had an incredibly impactful and rewarding volunteer experience. Devoting herself to serving others, she took part in building homes, lending a hand in the process of reconstruction and renewal. Witnessing the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, she felt a profound connection to the community and their journey towards recovery. Amidst the devastation, she channeled her passion for environmental preservation, working tirelessly to help nurture and cultivate plants that were vital to restoring the region's natural beauty.

Through her selfless efforts, my daughter played an instrumental role in fostering hope and healing for the people of San Juan. As she collaborated with locals and fellow volunteers, she not only honed her construction and gardening skills but also cultivated a deep appreciation for the power of collective action. The bonds she forged with the community members were invaluable, as they worked together to rebuild not only homes but also the spirit of resilience that defined the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Her volunteer experience in San Juan left an indelible mark on her heart, reinforcing her commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others. I couldn't be prouder of my daughter for embracing this opportunity to help those in need and demonstrate the importance of solidarity and compassion in times of crisis. This experience has undoubtedly shaped her into a more empathetic, compassionate, and responsible global citizen, ready to face any challenges that lie ahead with determination and kindness.

Memories, skills, and friends that I will cherish for a lifetime

Before we had even left, I was making plans to return with a new (and now best) friend of mine. I think that says something about how much fun we had. I chose this trip because I love travelling and wanted to explore a new place, I have an interest in the medical field, and as an avid photographer I thought Costa Rica would be a wonderful place to use these skills. This trip satisfied all of my expectations, and even exceeded them. Our group leaders were extremely fun and approachable, and they led us through some cool places and informative programs. Whether you enjoy the forest, mountains, or the beach, this trip has something for everyone. I learned skills that I am glad to know; my group members and I are now CPR certified and Wilderness First Aid certified, and it was so much fun learning these skills in a hands-on way, through practicing with dummies and even ourselves (fake injuries, of course). I've never been on a trip that was created and arranged for me through an organization (and I was hesitant, at first), and I must say that my amazing experience convinced me to try it again! Thank you, Global Works, for this incredible adventure.

Pros
  • Wide array of first aid/premed skills were taught
  • Thoroughly explored many different parts of Costa Rica
  • Flexible and diverse scheduling made each day unique
Cons
  • Not enough time at the clinic

  • I made lots of new lifelong friends.
  • I experienced new pieces of culture I’d never been apart of before.
  • I gained a much more global perspective.
