WAS Marketing and Media Manager

What person active in social media wouldn't like to have great pictures and videos in their grid? Nowadays is really helpful to have any Marketing knowledge, either if you have a business and need to communicate appropriately or if you want to improve your social media accounts. They teach you from the basics of marketing to how to edit photos and videos. How far can you go with this program? After finishing the Marketing and Media Manager program, my partner and I started a side-hustle (@maria.collars on Instagram) by taking advantage of the knowledge earned.

WAS Marketing and Media Manager

As a Graphic Designer, I'm always involved in communication and marketing projects without knowing much about the field. After finishing the program, I started a side-hustle here in Whistler using much of the knowledge earned. It was a perfect starting point as they teach you from the basics to organizing a branded event or managing social media. Also, I really enjoyed the Photo and Video courses; imagine that your class is at the ski or bike resort or in the middle of the woods. It is the perfect location to learn photography and videography if you want a great Instagram profile.

Pros
  • Is Whistler
  • Easy to learn
  • Network
Cons
  • Housing
  • Work Hours

From 0 to be a bike guide in less than 6 month!

After several year working as an engineer in Italy I decided to make a change and pursue my passion for biking. So, I moved to Squamish and took the bike guide training with Whistler Adventure School. After first few weeks of training I started to apply to guiding jobs and I had been hired as a canoe guide and bike guide with two different companies.
My experience with this training is definitely positive. After one year, I am still working as guide and coach and I love it. I am glad I did this training.
To conclude I would like to say that in order to have a wonderful and successful experience like mine it is important that you will approach this training with the right attitude. The same when you'll apply for a job as a guide or coach.
I really hope this review help you decide. In any case I am willing to have a chat with you if this can help you decide!

Pros
  • Location
  • Training
  • Jobs opportunities

I had lots of fun participating in the ski guide training at WAS. Personally, I barely had any experience at ski touring, so everything I know now it’s because of this course, which is a lot. It helped me to become a more confident skier, learnt a lot of things about the mountain and safety tips. I keep recommending it to my friends, but I think it might be a little bit too easy for some experienced people. The social environment was good, I met a lot of nice people and everyone tries to help each other as much as possible.

Pros
  • Learnt a lot
  • Lots of adventure
  • Made good friends
Cons
  • A little bit pricey
  • A little bit disorganized sometimes

Adventure Tourism Winter

I just ended up with my adventure tourism winter program at Whistler Adventure School. This program was different and very unique, getting more into the backcountry field.
All of those courses were taught by highly qualified experts in their field, who truly love their jobs.
It feels great to take on skills and knowledge that make me a more well-rounded outdoorsman and more capable partner for anyone I'm adventuring with.

Thank you, FX, Chris Lawrence, and all the other teachers and professionals for all their passion for this program.

Thank you Whistler Adventure School for this year!

Bike Guide Training

This course is absolutely recommended to people who loves mountain biking. I learnt a lot of new things related with mechanic, guiding people, first aids... The instructors were amazing and the school supported me always I required that. You have fun while you are learning a lot of interesting things. The program also allows you to work in bike environment, with people with the same interests of you, and that it awesome. I´ve already recommended this school to some friends. It was a very good experience in Whistler.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I´d change the order of the modules I studied. I think its better to start with the first aids course and mechanic to take the opportunity for the rest.

Whistler Adventure School | Mountain Sport Technician Program

WAS has been an amazing opportunity and experience all around. The school has given me the ability to live and play in the most beautiful place on earth. WAS has been a very in tune and inclusive school giving me the proper skills and certifications to pursue a job within the action sports industry. Since enrolling and attending WAS, i've been the happiest i've ever been and have made so many close friends through class and work. Having the ability to live, work, and study here in Whistler has been a dream come true. I have made industry connections that i otherwise never would have. The skills and knowledge i have gained from WAS have opened doors for me that I didn't know were possible. I highly recommend !

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Built my very own snowboard from scratch. The school gave me the opportunity to create and learn the process of building a snowboard!

Ski and Snowboard Guide 2020-2021

The Whistler Adventure School Ski and Snowboard Guide program was the perfect addition to my gap year. The course blended my love of skiing, with the satisfaction of hiking, while teaching the skills necessary to be a dependable leader. Not only did I discover the glory of backcountry skiing but, I also gained the knowledge surrounding weather, snow quality, terrain condition, and avalanche danger needed to accomplish this activity safely. I am grateful to WAS for introducing me to, and giving me the knowledge to be successful in an activity I intend to pursue for the rest of my life.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
When we reached the top of the Spearhead glacier, I looked down at the run before me. At first I thought the snow would be windblown and I was in for a rough ride, however, the moment I took my first turn I realized I couldn't have been more wrong. The snow was perfect powder, with a slight hard layer which allowed partial carving. I enjoyed every minute of my ride down, I could never imagine having access to unfettered turns like those in resort. At the bottom, I surveyed my work. My groups turns were lined up in perfectly in sync, evenly shaped and not overlapping, as if we were in a ski movie. Ever since, I have wanted more.

Great Instructors and Location

Studying at WAS is a great experience that can take you to another level of learning. It all depends on how deep you want to go on the learning, the instructors have the knowledge and answer to any questions you might have as well as helping you find the answers if they don't have it already. They also make sure to give you the tools to search by yourself.
You can have fun and learn at the same time, Whistler is an amazing place and you can get experience working there at the same time you learn.
Most of the courses are outdoor and that is amazing, you can enjoy whistler at it's best!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Keep in mind that the school is in a Resort town. Living and eating can be expensive, but not impeditive, since you can work for companies there that will also give you the passes on winter and summer to go up the mountain.
