CIEE in Madrid!

I spent this past year teaching English in Thailand through CIEE and had such a great experience that I decided I wanted to do Spain next! CIEE walked me through the whole visa process step by step and were available to answer any questions by email. Besides visa support, one of my favorite things about teaching abroad through CIEE is the community it helps you build. I’ve met so many amazing people through this program and nothing beats traveling the world with some of your best friends! If you’re looking for an opportunity to travel abroad, CIEE has so many options that allow you to get out there and see the world while making a difference:)

Pros
  • Getting out of your comfort zone
  • Meeting new people
  • Lots of traveling opportunities!
Cons
  • There’s a fee

CIEE Teach Abroad: Spain

Teaching abroad in Spain was an incredible experience. I learned so much from living in another culture. I was challenged in learning a new language and seeing the world from a different perspective. I also gained some helpful teaching experince. By doing the program through CIEE I made friends and had assistance with the visa process and finding housing. There was someone there to support every step of the way. I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking to step outside of their comfort zone.

Pros
  • Learning a new language
  • Gained teaching experience
  • Gain soft skills
Cons
  • Language barriers

A great experience!

I had a great time teaching with CIEE. The staff was super supportive and able to answer any questions I had. I would highly recommend the program to family and friends. One of the most helpful things was the visa support they where able to give us as it is very complicated trying to tackle it by yourself. I felt super safe participating in the program and really enjoyed how they sent out weekly emails with things going on in Madrid and at the CIEE center. The orientation was also very helpful and helped me feel more at home.

Pros
  • Visa help
  • Housing help

CIEE

CIEE was so helpful and made moving to Madrid so easy. I don’t regret going with them at all. They help with the visa process, provide and orientation with a leader who lives in Madrid. They always answer emails quickly and are very helpful. The money you pay is worth it as the transition with CIEE has been extremely easy. I would recommend this program to anyone who is trying to teach abroad. They have options for other places outside of Spain as well so you can really pick the best fit for you And where you want to teach.

CIEE Teach Abroad experience

I chose to teach abroad through CIEE’s program in Thailand during 2022 and loved it so much that I applied a second time for their Madrid program! I am currently teaching in Madrid now and the transitional period was so much easier having CIEE to lean on. The week long orientation allowed for sleep reorientation and basic info about the city of Madrid! My orientation leader aided in all things including metro passes, bank accounts, and city recommendations! Meeting other travelers and English teachers has been so easy because of the community CIEE creates.

Pros
  • Help within the Visa and insurance process
  • First week stay in a hotel during orientation helped get my body accustomed to the time zone shift
  • The community of other English teachers I have met has been one of my favorite advantages to using CIEE
Cons
  • While there is a convenient week-long orientation to adjust to the Madrid life and start looking for housing, you will most likely need to purchase temporary housing while apartment hunting!

Pricey but worth it

CIEE helped to make my transition from the U.S. to Spain seamless. There was ample information provided throughout the pre-departure orientation and even a canvas course to help! Once I arrived in Spain, CIEE was there to make sure I knew how to get settled in a foreign country and also was incredibly helpful in helping me to navigate and secure the long term documents for residency. They also planned a few cultural events throughout the year. Price was worth it for me never having lived abroad.

Pros
  • Recommended for couples (I got a placement at a school with my partner)
  • So much helpful support before leaving and once I arrived
  • Weekly newsletters about events and info about Madrid from locals
Cons
  • Cost

Do not miss your opportunity with CIEE

This was my first year with CIEE and hopefully not my last. I had an amazing experience with CIEE and they provided excellent support during the whole visa process and throughout the year in Spain. They were fast to alert us on any changes the consulate had with visas and were super helpful with the TIE process as well. I have gotten job offers right after this experience because it is valuable experience most employers are looking for. I regret not staying another year, but I knew that I wanted to go back to graduate school in the United States.

Pros
  • Making amazing new friends that will last a lifetime.
  • Getting out of your comfort zone to try new things.
  • So much support and assistance through the whole program.
Cons
  • Finding housing was a little stressful.
  • Did not save up enough money to travel more.
  • The commute to work could've been better if I looked better.

Ciee Teach Abroad Spain

Teaching abroad in Spain has been an amazing year and Ciee has really provided so much help to make this transition easier. They helped us with applying for a visa, how to navigate the TIE process, gave us resources on how to get an apartment, a bank account, public transport card, and insurance.
Going abroad is a wonderful experience and it has been so helpful having these resources and advice before and after arriving in Spain. I have met so many other people teaching abroad through other programs that did not have this much support in moving abroad.

Pros
  • Advice for moving abroad and what to expect
  • Learning about different cultures
Cons
  • Expensive

Worth it if you have some savings

I really enjoyed living in Madrid, and CIEE was a means to get situated here easily (emphasis on easily - they were super helpful with the visa process, the foreigner's identity card process [TIE] and a lot more of the technical governmental things that are pretty confusing to handle on your own). They provide office hours so you can stop by the CIEE center to ask questions which is also really great. During orientation, they put us in a pretty solid hotel and provided us with informational tours and all of the information we needed.

Pros
  • 4 day workweek, only 16-20 hours a week
  • Do not need to speak any Spanish to be on the program
Cons
  • The pay of 1000 EUR a month is not up to standard with living costs anymore

Great course! I would definitely recommend!

I really enjoyed my CIEE TEFL Certification course. The course is completely online, so you are able to complete each module at your own pace. Because it is quite a bit of work condensed into just 10 weeks, I found the weekly deadlines for quizzes and assignments very helpful to keep me on track. I am not sure where I will teach yet, but I imagine if you are planning to teach right away, being able to complete the certification in 10 weeks would be very helpful. My teacher was wonderful and very quick to respond to any questions I sent her through Canvas. I actually really enjoyed the discussion boards to discuss the material with peers, and the weekly assignments were engaging and thought provoking way. Overall, I do feel prepared to teach!

Pros
  • It is self-paced, but there are deadlines to hold you accountable.
  • Like with most classes, you get back what you put in!
  • CIEE has created a very supportive and encouraging environment.
Cons
  • There is quite a bit of work and material condensed into only 10 weeks, but it is up to the student how much work they would like to put into the class.
  • I appreciate the flexibility of the online nature of the course, but I did miss being able to connect with my peers in person.
