Dogsled volunteering in Canada

It's nearly six months ago since I left the Canadian bush. I stayed at a Canadian Husky ranch in BC over Spring so there was no dogsledding but it was still a great experience.

I Learned and saw so many new things. The wildlife is really great and I discovered almost every day a new animal. Here a little overview: a motherbear with 3 cubs, marmots, squirls, a lot of deers, snowrabbits (still with white paws, that looks funny), snowchickens, a gardensnake, different eagles and an endless amount of birds, known and unknown, including hummingbirds.

When I arrived Spring started and the flowers and plants slowly went in bloom and the first leaves started to grow on the trees. Down in the valley, the willows and daffodils started flourishing. It was still a bit cold at first and it was difficult to imagine that the temp goes up to 85 degrees or more.

The huskies behavior was pretty good and I didn't have any troubles with them. I knew them now by their names and I fed them every day twice and changed the water. Another thing we did is brushing the dogs because they're changing from winter to summer fur.

As the dogs just came out of winter season they need to relax a lot but we did do a lot of hikes and walks with the dogs. We also cut and split trees for firewood (for the next long winter), painted dog- and beeboxes and did other daily jobs around house and garden. The couple I lived with is also managing a camping resort with cabins, which they owned some years ago, for the the new owner. It's on a very nice lake and we spend there some days a week to cut dry grass, repair some facilities and get rid of old things, because the resort was absolutely disregarded in the last years. And I can drive with a V8 7.2 l truck with 4 wheel drive on the worst road I've ever seen, that's not only a pleasure. It’s a great experience!

I am a real Texan growing up very rural on a farm (diary) so for me to be on a different type of ranch and experience the Canadian outdoor life was great! Thanks Fronteering!

What would you improve about this program?
If you want to dogsled come for Winter. Or from September and onwards they start racing with carts and ATVS to get the dogs in to shape for winter.

Husky ranch dogsledding volunteering in Canada

I joined the husky ranch program of Fronteering earlier this year. I arrived early March which was towards the end of the winter season of course but it still got a good 6 weeks of dogsledding in which was great.

I stayed a total of 10 weeks so the last 4 weeks we started working more towards preparing the ranch for summer. Seeing the place come to life during spring was also great. Summer I hear is also good time to go but if you want to have snow and do dogsledding in the snow then you need to go between Mid November and Mid April. Sure you can maybe dogsled before or after those dates depending on which ranch you will be placed at but to be assured I would recommend those dates.

Also it is good to know that not all ranches have the typical Siberian huskies. The ranch I went to had Alaskan huskies which is a mixed breed bred to be the perfect sled dog.

Dogsledding itself is so awesome, it is much faster then you think but also quite a work out!

What would you improve about this program?
Not a note to Fronteering but more to the volunteers. Fronteering provides a lot of info. Some of it easy to read over if you are that kind of person. Make sure you prepare yourself and read well!

Amazon Survival Guide adventure in Brazil

I went to Brazil not knowing much and not having much expectation! Some called me crazy for getting on an adventure like this blindly but I the guys from Fronteering seemed nice and helpful and trusted that all would be arranged well and taken care off. That it was!

I had a great time being an adventure lover. I often camp and Hike in the highlands so sleeping out in the field was no stranger to me but waking up under the jungle canopy is something really magical!

You see quite a bit of wildlife but it is a lot more difficult to spot compared for example South Africa. But when you do spot something its always something cool and very rewarding!

Though you should not be afraid of spiders and other bugs if you join this trip! Besides that I can surely recommend it!

What would you improve about this program?
The program is quite unpredictable due to the survivals being dependent on the number of tourists. Not much that can be done about that but it thought it would be good to mention.

Vancouver WIldlife volunteering

I volunteered for 8 weeks at a wildlife rehab in Vancouver. What a great time it was living in the greatest city in the world! Vancouver! The project and the animals were great, the people were so friendly and helpful! Thanks Fronteering!

The city has literally everything. Within 20 minutes you are in the mountains where you can see wildlife and go skiing while at the same time within a 20 minutes you can be at the beach. The views are so great everywhere and there is a lot to do especially for wildlife and outdoor lovers.

The wildlife center was great and I learned a lot and it helped me set my future choice to become a biologist. I can recommend this program to anyone who loves wildlife but who also likes to be comfortable and be in a city. .

What would you improve about this program?
By not having it end? I had a great time but the time went too fast!

Volunteering with wildlife Vancouver!

I traveled as a volunteer from Denmark to Vancouver to learn about Wildlife Rehabilitation as part of my study back home. I chose this program as I wanted to care for wildlife but also because I wanted to be in a city and not too isolated. Vancouver is of course the perfect choice for that as it has so much to do!

Vancouver is such a cool city being surrounded by mountains and the ocean while also being able to go to the movies, go party and visit shopping malls. But the best part were the mountains that I could visit on my days off. The views of the city are amazing!

I loved my time at the project caring for all the animals while having a great time exploring the city and spending time with my host family. I want to thank Fronteering for their great help to make this all possible, the host family for their great care and the wildlife project for their great experience!

Volunteering as a survival Guide in the Amazon!

I had a great experience in this program. Firstly this program is unique as it feels like your doing several programs at once as well as you stay in different places. Your main home base is in a nice homestay with a great family who is also the person who runs the survival trips. Then there is the base In the jungle a few hours away from Manaus and then we also stay on occasion in temporary camps under the jungle canopy.

The whole experience was amazing! The Host family they were such a loving family and i learned so much being with them. I picked up a whole lot of the Portuguese too, which I used quite successfully in Paulinia, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Oh and I got to see a jaguar in the jungle! After a long hike in the rainforest we were suddenly told to stop talking and be as quiet as possible. The guides had spotted something that they didn't want spooked. Slowly, step by step we silently caught up with them and looked straight up a tree, so tall that you could probably climb it to heaven. Looking up as high as I could, I saw a black mass on one of the branches - a jaguar. Such a cool sighting - i still don't know how the guides saw it so high up. Even with my camera on full zoom, I couldn't take one recognizable picture. You'll just have to take my word on this one - it was really cool"

I wish I could have taken part in the program longer!

Pantanal Volunteering with Wildlife

I always dreamed of going to the Pantanal but I always wanted to go for a longer time while most lodge usually only offer 4 day programs which are extremely expensive considering the short duration and the time and money it takes to get there.

While this program is not cheap it is if you consider the amount of weeks you are staying and the experience you get. It is nice to not only get to see the pantanal but also to experience and be submerged in the daily life of the people that call the Pantanal home. What a beautiful experience it was and I can recommend this to anyone who has a bit of an adventurous spirit and who loves wildlife and nature.

I can also recommend Fronteering in general, their services was great and I am looking forward to take another trip with them next year! I am still deciding between Guyana or the Canadian Arctic!

What would you improve about this program?
The program was prefect and I could not have asked for more!

Pantanal, the last eden!

Wow, where to start. Pantanal was one of my favorite places in the world when I first visited in 2004 and still is my favorite place now that I visited it again in 2017. My visit in 2004 was purely for travel and was a short staying in the Pantanal is expensive. When I heard about a volunteering program in the Pantanal that lets you train and become a wildlife guide I was immediately sold! Being able to stay in the Pantanal for weeks instead of just a few days? HECK yeah!

It is honestly hard to believe that the Pantanal is still flying under the radar for so many travelers visiting Brazil. It is hansdown one of the best places in the world to see a wide and great variety of wildlife. Only places Like the Masai Mara in Kenya really come close except that the Pantanal is way more beautiful landscape wise.

Thanks Fronteering for making my dream come true at my age of 63! Everything was arranged top notch and all the people I had to deal with both at the host organization and at Fronteering were kind and helpful!

Becoming a wildlife guide was so amazing, the horse riding, the fishing, the bird watching, the search for wildlife, kayaking, jeep safari's. I've learned so much and got to experience so much. We saw such a variety of wildlife that it is too much to keep track. What was my favourite encounter? The Tapir and Giant anteaters were definitely highlands but of course seeing is a Jaguar in the wild is hard to beat!

I recommend this trip to anyone who is a wildlife lover and I give this trip a 10 out of 10. I did give this program a 8 for Impact as it is a voluntourism program and your impact is not direct however more longterm as through wildlife tourism in a responsible way the wildlife can be protected. One of the great things about this area is that they no longer hunt there (safe for the feral pigs that are a pest) and that is all to thanks to eco-tourism!

What a wonderful we world we live in! It is out there, just go and and enjoy it no matter your age or goals in life!

What would you improve about this program?
I honestly would not know what could be improved, everything was excellent from the service to the food.

My Perfect stay at Florida Wildlife Rehab through Fronteering

I wanted to update you about my project and homestay experience! I just finished my Wildlife Project in Florida. I just wanted to let you know that my stay at my homestay family was beyond perfect. I felt so welcome at their house from the first second on and I must say that they are the most caring and loving people I've ever met. They did everything to make me happy! They drove me around and to the volunteering program daily, They always asked what we wanted to eat and bought it immediately or even took us to the store where I could pick whatever I wanted. Also, they took me out to eat serveral times and payed for it. Their efforts go far beyond what they have to do and I really appreciate it. I even could stay three days longer! Also, the rooms where the interns stay are really nice and I really felt like being at home.
Working at the wildlife rehab center was so much fun. Everybody was so nice and appreciated my work and was thankful for every helping hand. I learned a lot about animals and the Florida wildlife, mostly from my superivor!
I can highly recommend this host family and project to anybody :)! Thanks Fronteering!

my holiday

An ideal holiday for me is full of active pastime, for example, swimming, playing volleyball, visiting new attractions, etc. My parents know how much I like beach holiday, that’s why every summer we go somewhere hot.

Last year we visited Italy . It was our first time in this beautiful and hospitable country. The Adriatic Sea was fantastic and the sun was gentle. Several times we went out to the fashionable restaurants to try local dishes. Italian cuisine is delicious. It involves lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, seafood and olive oil. I spent lots of time swimming, sunbathing and playing active beach games. For a change we decided to visit some local sights. First of all we visited the Venezian opera in the center of the city . It’s one of most beautiful ancient temples of Italy and the most visited tourist attraction. We also visited a Church in Giudecca iceland , which is famous for its dramatic views and stunning sunsets. All in all, it was a great vacation. I hope that we will go there again sometimes.
