Linguistic Horizons

This is a once in a life-time kind of program. The internship placements felt very personal and cultivated toward my professional goals. Nicole is always extremely friendly, conscientious, and quick to respond to emails/concerns/questions. I stayed in Spain and I can say that my Spanish vastly improved, especially because of the emphasis Nicole put on speaking Spanish the whole time. As awesome as the internship placement was, I also felt like there were lots of opportunities for weekend trips and to make friends with locals. I’d highly recommend for people interested in cultural immersion.

Pros
  • Spanish Immersion
  • Personalized Internship
  • Weekend Trips
Cons
  • Small Group of others in Program

Perú 2018

The UCCS Hispanic Honor Society Omega Tau Sigma Del Pi organized a trip to Perú and interviewed several abroad options. However, Linguistic Horizons proved to be the best option. The trip met our goal to give back to the locals by engaging in various efforts to support organic farming, donating several hundred pounds of clothing to locals, all while experiencing the beauty of Urubamba, Cuzco, and Machu Picchu. Linguistic Horizons met all expectations, handled all logistics, ensured safety, room, transportation, great healthy food, interaction with the locals, learning at a profound and meaningful manner the essence of Machu Picchu as no literature could ever detail. The entire experience was unforgettable and enriching. Thank you Linguistic Horizons your commitment to students!

Pros
  • The program was customized
  • Safe
  • High level learning
Cons
  • For what the program has to offer, we could have made it a longer trip

Strongly recommend

If you are considering to study abroad, I strongly recommend Linguistic Horizons. Nicole, the program director, is very well organized, always available and willing to help the students. The program is well structured with a syllabus suitable to the course. There are a lot of weekend excursions which make the time abroad extremely fun. La Coruña is a safe and beautiful coastal city to learn Spanish, practice with native speakers, enjoy the culture and food while enjoying life abroad. That was my first time in Spain and quite frankly I didn’t regret a second of it.

Pros
  • Fun
  • Immersion
  • Create memories
Cons
  • Hot and humid
  • Mountain town
Response from Linguistic Horizons LLC

Thank you for leaving a review about your experience with us! I'm so glad you had a such a positive experience. Thank you for coming and for bringing an upbeat positive attitude to the group. Did you mean to say that La Coruña is a mountain town in the cons? I think that's a mistake but I just wanted to check...it is a coastal town :) as you mentioned in the written review. Anyway, thank you for joining us! I hope you'll come visit us sometime in the future!

I had an amazingly unique internship opportunity!

I couldn't have asked for a more unexpectantly unique opportunity. Nicole and Soraida from Linguistic Horizons were able to find me an internship in psychology that would be very difficult to obtain on my own. Internships in healthcare are very complicated to obtain, as most are only open to students who already have more than a bachelor's degree. Nicole and Soraida arranged for me an internship within a physiotherapy clinic where they allowed me to construct my own psychology interventions under the supervision of the physiotherapists and occupational therapists from the clinic. Though difficult at first, I learned so much and it helped me gain more trust in my knowledge. In addition, this internship helped me decide to pursue a master's in psychology, something I was still not sure whether I wanted to do. Linguistic Horizons also helped me find a very comfortable and accessible place to live and arranged literally everything for me so that my move abroad was as smooth as possible. I had an amazing and super unique experience, and it was all thanks to the incredible help and support from the staff of Linguistic Horizons. My internship placement was in A Coruña, Spain which was also a very unique place to be and best of all, it was not a typical touristic place, so it is a full Spanish language and culture immersion. The city is cozy and has beautiful landscapes with amazing views to the Atlantic Ocean.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Ask all the questions. Don't assume it can't be done.

Would definitely return!

I loved my experience in Spain. I made some great friends that helped me figure out how to live independently, and gave me some great life advice. Being the youngest one of the group, I was afraid at first, but after meeting everyone and finding my way around the city, I felt very comfortable with everything. I loved my Spanish classes as well, they were fun and interesting, as well as helped me grow my language skills. When I became familiar with the city and the people around me, I came out of my shell and am definitely a different person than I was when I left, which is absolutely a good thing.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Believe it or not, going through TSA in America. I was entirely separated from my parents and anyone I knew for the first time. I was scared but I needed to show myself that I could do it, so I did.

Indescribable

Not only was the director and founder, Nicole Berry, great help with finding my perfect internship but she was a kind-hearted, genuine, and caring person. Linguistic Horizons helped me understand what I want to do in life; which is being an ESL teacher in different countries. The two weeks I spent in Peru with that company were two weeks that I will always remember. The bonds I made were as life-changing as the program itself. If had the means to do it all over again I would. I could talk for years and years about those two weeks. I will never again experience something so soul-cleansing and professionally beneficial as Linguistic Horizons.

Learning Spanish in a Professional Setting

Really great opportunity to learn Spanish in a professional setting. I gave a general idea of what kind of internship I was looking for, and Nicole got back to me with a few ideas. I liked the Emilia Pardo Bazan museum, and I got to intern there for a month. The staff were extremely welcoming and helped me grow as a Spanish learner and an employee. Communication was extremely clear from beginning to end. Along with the internship, there was a Spanish conversation course that was useful to practice Spanish in a less professional and less stressful environment. It was great that both the internship and the course counted for college credit and accredited by the University of A Coruna.
The city is wonderful. There is a great beach that is always full of people in the summer. There are great landmarks to visit. The city center is beautiful, and Nicole personally guided us through the city on numerous occasions to see churches and landmarks.
Nicole also set up housing for us, and was more than willing to accomodate any issues or concerns. She chose locations that were close to our internships, making it easy to walk over. She also sets up trips to other parts of Spain for weekends, as well as other day trips to places outside of Coruna like Santiago and a beach farther away for surfing.
A really wonderful and unique program.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Speak Spanish. Make friends with whoever you can, especially your housemates. Don't be afraid to adventure out on your own. Nicole has great suggestions for places to go, and she's always willing to talk.

Go for it!

No matter where you would like to intern at or visit, contact Nicole! What I loved most about my experience overseas was the internship opportunity Nicole was able to find and organize for me. I wanted a place that was rich in culture, participate and immerse myself with the locals, try new foods, improve my Spanish, and gain experience in a work environment that catered to my education. La Coruña was all that and much more! The places we visited were so gorgeous, the other people in my group were just as involved, class was very helpful since we were fortunate enough to have such a small class size, it all worked out so wonderfully. Not to mention, interning with Linguistic Horizons is very affordable! As compared to other programs I was looking into at the time, Linguistic Horizons not only offered a lot more, but also gave individual attention to everyone! The whole schooling and interning were so very well organized that it leaves you feeling very safe and comfortable with being so far away from home. Thank you, Nicole, for the experience!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
PLEASE add on the Portugal visit when applying for the summer! Such a beautiful place! The weather is unpredictable, so take advantage of the sunny beach days.

Worth it

After months of searching, I was running out of time to find an internship abroad to meet my graduation requirements. Balancing full-time work, my studies, and internship applications (in a foreign language) gets overwhelming. I also couldn't even get a single response or get in touch with a real person. I'll admit I was reluctant about paying an agency to find a job for me but it was worth it.

Nicole and her team were able to make contact with real people for interviews for me when I couldn't get a single response. Plus, they found internships in the area I wanted to be in that met my unique job criteria and worked with my linjited French fluency. Most companies just offer cookie-cutter positions from their list of partner companies, but Lingo goes beyond that to find a position that is actually a good fit for you. She was so kind and helpful and everything worked out perfectly in the end.

New Friends, Family, and Career Connections in Undiscovered Galicia

A Coruna is EXTREMELY safe. Walking around on a weekend evening from 2-4am in the summer, I rarely felt unsafe and often saw families or young children out on the streets. The city is also extremely walkable, so it is easy to get anywhere in 10-30 minutes.
Living with a host family was amazing- coordinated by Nicole to meet our personal requests, I lived with two young professionals in a very clean 3-bedroom apartment. I had my own room and access to a very clean bathroom, kitchen, and city center. In addition, the building I lived in was extremely welcoming and socially and educationally engaged with me to show me the city and improve my conversation skills. I am extremely thankful to all of the people in my building.
Nicole was always available; for advice, practical assistance, or company. However, she somehow always knew when to push you beyond your boundaries or check in with you at the exact right times. She is a wise woman with many worldly connections that has immeasurable worth.
Studying at Universidad da Coruna was a complex yet extremely rewarding Spanish-language learning experience. Not only were the University resources sufficient, but the teachers were extremely kind, generous with their time, and knowledgeable. Class sizes were extremely small and limited to the students in the study abroad program, so a lot of conversation and one-on-one learning made for a perfect environment to gain comfort ability speaking.

What would you improve about this program?
I had an unforgettable experience- I would not change a single thing.
