Hawaii

GIVE Volunteers is an incredible program. They practice responsible travel and sustainability. Going onto my trip in Hawaii was an eye opening experience and has changed my life for the much better.

I met the most wonderful people in the 8 days of this trip. My guides Jess, Traven and Thomas were the most welcoming people and made you feel nothing but comfortable. Every single person I met on my trip I now get to call my family.

Thank you GIVE for giving me the opportunity to meet all of these amazing human beings and teaching my so much about our earth. I fell in love with GIVE, my guides and all of the people I met along the way and I can’t wait for another trip !!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Travelling to Hawaii alone and meetings 15 others was very nerve racking for me. It ended up being the best decision I could have ever made. I met the most amazing people!

Worth every dollar.

My trip with GIVE in Hawaii was absolutely one of the best decisions I have ever made. I was hesitant to because my past trip to Nicaragua got cancelled twice due to COVID, but I took the leap anyway and left the trip with so much knowledge and happiness. The guides and fellow volunteers made me feel like family from day 1 and the service projects we did were so rewarding. We walked away knowing we left the island better than we found it and for that, I am so grateful. Don't be afraid to travel alone and go in knowing no one. It was honeslty way better that way. Get out of your comfort zone and just do it! After the trip, you will realize all the money you spent was worth it.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
It was 100% getting off the plane in Kona and walking up to meet the group. I had so much anxiety about meeting the people I would be spending the next 8 days with, but the moment I found a small group of them waiting at our designated area, I felt relieved. We got to talking right away, and I realized that everything was going to be okay and I had some great people to get to know over the course of the trip. It can be anxiety-inducing traveling alone, but it builds so much character!

Impactful, Sustainable and Downright Fun Experience

I found GIVE through a friend in 2014, and decided to save up to go on a trip of my own. My good friend expressed interest and we settled on the Nicaragua program. Right after the first night, I knew I'd picked a solid organization. GIVE brought together students from Australia and the US and immediately we talked about the importance of sustainable, ethical travel. The program was the ideal mix of work and play. You volunteered WITH the community for most of the working hours of the day but then enjoyed dinner, surf lessons, and bonding time with the rest of the volunteers. There were breakout sessions and learning moments to really help solidify and process what we were doing in Nicaragua, which helped creat a lasting impression I can still speak about to this day.

What was your funniest moment?
All the volunteers arrived at Little Corn Island and got to where we were staying. My two roommates and I were getting ready for bed, and one of them got caught in her mosquito net. Instead of helping, we started cracking up as she was laughing and struggling to get untangled. It was a hilarious moment.

BEST first GIVE trip I could’ve asked for

The most amazing experience ever, I am so glad I decided to go on this trip. I originally didn’t really want to go, the Nicaragua trip was cancelled due to COVID so I was like I guess I’ll do the Hawaii trip and I am SO glad it was my first GIVE trip. I met beautiful like minded people on my group who will be forever friends. The tour guides I had, Jess, Kealoha, and Traven were all so nice, funny, and knowledgeable about local culture and how tourism impacts the land on the Big Island. Seeing how the work we were doing directly impacts the environment to provide cultural preservation and food security was awesome to see. Plus, all the excursions (despite some being cancelled because of uncontrollable weather) were the best I could not have asked for a better first GIVE trip!! Everywhere I travel in the future I will be implementing the responsible tourism information I learned with this trip.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar thing I ate was dried crawfish with a common seasoning used in Hawaii on it. Another thing I didn’t know what it was when I saw it was Longan, a fruit similar to lychee which I love so it became familiar quick.

GIVE Volunteers Nepal

My experience with GIVE in the Himalayas was the once-in-a-lifetime type. We started off exploring Kathmandu. We then made our way from city to town to village, using cars and then hiking to get to Langtang. In between, we stayed in tea houses and enjoyed the local’s hospitality and traditional food. All the way to Langtang we observed the breathtaking Himalayas towering us from all around. We did construction work in the village and met many wonderful people. I’ll never forget the views and the love.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take appropriate hiking clothes with you. And a good raincoat and rain pants.
Be patient throughout and train before you come. The mountains are tough.

Say YESS to new adventures!!!

I volunteered in Thailand and Laos and there is not a day that goes by where I don't think about my GIVE trip! This was my first time out of the country and my first time traveling alone, so my family was hesitant to let me go. However, from day one GIVE was clear and informative of everything from expenses, to safety, and their mission. GIVE provides materials to prepare volunteers for their trip well in advance and is prompt to answer questions. The guides are welcoming and supportive throughout the entire experience. Their passion inspires you to put your everything into the volunteer work and their energy is infectious. Being able to work, laugh, dance, and learn from the locals of Sop Chem is truly an unforgettable experience. You teach the children, but they will teach you more than you'll ever be able to imagine. They will challenge you in the best ways and steal your heart from day one! I am so glad that I chose to volunteer in both Thailand and Laos. Meeting the other volunteers was my favorite part of the trip and being able to experience both countries with them made it even more memorable!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Experience the moment before taking a picture, allow yourself to open up to others, try as many new foods as possible, and embrace going out of your comfort zone!

Say YES to new adventures!!!

There is not a day that goes by where I don't think about my GIVE trip! This was my first time traveling on my own, and my first time out of the country, so my parents and family were skeptical about letting me go. However, from day one GIVE was clear and informative of everything from expenses, to safety, and their mission. The guides provide materials to prepare volunteers for their trip well in advance and are supportive throughout the entire process. My favorite part of the entire experience was getting to meet the locals and other volunteers. I am so thankful to have been able to work, learn, laugh, and dance with some of the most incredible humans. Never did I imagine that a group of strangers would feel like a second family in such a short time!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers is to take to heart the knowledge that is taught to you during the group chats, and use that information to your advantage whether it be changes in your own life or just spreading awareness to others.

Dont be Afraid to Say Yes to Adventure!!!

I signed up for this trip because I wanted an adventure, and I for sure got an adventure of a lifetime! Among climbing a mountain and going into 2 caves, was the heart of the trip. We stayed in a hidden gem, Sop Chem, surrounded by mountains with the most welcoming of people. They met us right when we got off our boats and brought us into their culture. Within the culture dive we taught the children English and worked on their permaculture plot building a mud brick house. It was an incredible experience, I can never forget and incredible people I will never forget. I started the trip with random strangers and left with deep rooted friendships. Two things that stood out to me the most are: feeding the bears at Free the Bears and the Baci ceremony held on the last day in Sop Chem as we danced with the children and received the gratitude from the locals for the impact we left. Khob jai lai lai (Laos for thank you very much) GIVE for this incredible trip!!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Bring a couple decks of cards or other games to play with the other volunteers during down time.

Laos Program

This trip was the best thing that’s ever happened to me. It opened my eyes to the world around me and helped me grow so much as a person. There is something special about Sop Chem that makes you feel at home even though we are thousands of miles away from home. They take you in like their own and it was so humbling to be a part of that. The views that we got to see everyday are indescribable and a must see! This was such an incredible once in a lifetime experience that will stay with me forever!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would say to future travelers is to be comfortable in the uncomfortable. Be vulnerable with your group and the people you meet along the way. I would also say use your guides because they are there for you!

Life changing experience

Going to Laos with Give was the best experience of my life! I learned how important it is to get to know the community that you are working with and how this can create sustainable impact. The people that we worked with were so amazing. Laos is also one of the most beautiful countries I have ever been to. It is a real paradise. The cultural activities that we did were so helpful in learning about Laos and getting to know the people. It was so special to get to do those activities. I don’t think any travel experience can top the time I had with Give in Laos!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice for future travelers would be to go in with an open mind and pack a lot lighter than you think you should!
