About Program

Gaborone is the economic, political, and cultural capital of Botswana and reputedly one of Africa’s more low-key capitals – possibly because it hosts two well-known game reserves filled with diverse wildlife that offer a peaceful respite from the bustling city.

Students take courses at the University of Botswana in addition to volunteering and participating in unique excursions designed to immerse them in the community. Together, these experiences give students a solid understanding of contemporary Botswana culture and its role in Southern Africa.

Courses are available in English and Setswana.

  • Excursions to Bahurutshe Cultural Village to learn about local traditional dance, music, and games, how to pound and grind sorghum, talk with village elders, visit the kraal, and sleep in traditional huts.
  • Depending on their program of study and availability, students may be able to participate in an internship or volunteer.

CIEE Summer Community Public Health, Botswana

This program opens up opportunities for learning more about health care in a challenging and dynamic/hands on way. Botswana is a safe country and Gaborone is a growing city. If you are vegetarian, you will find lots of food to eat. Local cuisine is great! You'll love the experience if you like to travel between countries and go on safari's as well! Africa is such an amazing place and you'll find yourself wanting to go back to moment you come home.

What would you improve about this program?
My experience with the clinical aspect of the program was too hands on. It is meant to be observational, however, realize that you are going into a country with its own laws and regulations. You need to be smart and savvy at staying safe in a medical environment and saying 'no' when you are not comfortable with certain situations where you may be asked to do a small medical procedure! It's for the best of the patients and you as well.
