SAO UIC

The staff was supportive and friendly, and I definitely felt safe and heard by them.

As a fourth-year student at the University of Illinois Chicago, I have prioritized discovering what interests me as I broaden my intellect through the opportunities I participate in and learn from. My resume showcases my drive to be in communities and engage in them to foster positive change. I have been a mentor in my college’s Peer Mentoring Program, participated in acclaimed programs like APA Future Leaders in Psychiatry, was selected as a student to represent my college in a panel with the governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, and have experience as an intern in organizations like W. Clement & Jessie Stone Foundation. Such roles have helped me learn how to work with others, be a leader, cultivate solutions to problems that may arise, and work with a diverse range of people.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Don't be afraid to ask questions and seek support when needed
Pros
  • New experiences
  • Working with new people
  • Challenging work that'll grow your skills
Cons
  • Early Wake-Ups
  • Late Night sleeps due to work
  • No constant cellular data on phone unless you pay

Study Abroad Costa Rica 2026

Arcos is an amazing organization with wonderful directors! The directors, Angelica and Sergio in Costa Rica were so helpful and kind. They both were with us every day during our two week study abroad in Heredia. They helped us in any way possible and were so generous! I truly appreciate all the activities that were planned for our group and I. They both were so excited and proud to teach us about the culture, language, and foods of Costa Rica. This entire experience was 10/10! I hope everyone gets to experience this at least once.

Texas State University's Study Abroad for Physical Therapy in Atenas, Costa Rica

I wanted to explore, and since I already knew Spanish, learning a new dialect while also learning medical terminology was a lot of fun. The clinical visits were amazing. I am grateful that I got a chance to learn a variety of material regarding physical therapy and healthcare in Spanish in general. This program made me want to go back and possibly get a degree or even live there, since I had such a wonderful time. The people were probably the nicest, and I do not know why, but some of the best people I have ever met. You could be a stranger, and they would treat you like family, which is amazing.

What was your funniest moment?
I stayed an extra day rather than my group, who left the day the program ended. I met an Uber driver who was kind and amazing, who took me to the beach. No one else in my group got a chance to go to the beach except me because of that.
Pros
  • Seeing and learning different aspects of the Costa Rican medical system
  • The clinics and volunteer expierecnce
  • The scenery and enviroment was beautiful along with the walkability of the town
Cons
  • The people I went with were not that
  • It was too short, only a week does not seem like enough time.
  • My group did not go to the beach unfortunately but I did but I felt bad for them not going.

Amazing

I stayed with a couple whose children had already moved out and one other girl from my university. It was amazing, I got to meet the family, stay in a regular home, and was able to walk right over to the local university. The host family was super kind, understanding, and accepting and loved to chat and teach, especially since my spanish could use some work at times, but they were always patient and helped me through a difficult moment. some parts were a little awkward or embarrassing but nothing that wrecked anything, just language, culture, and a change in environment make things funky sometimes. The classes were fun and mostly covering culture, food, history, and the environment. I loved seeing all of the cool museums, markets, and cities, it felt cool to immerse myself in a new environment but in a more controlled way so it didnt feel frightening or confusing. the fun activities were amazing, ziplining, cooking, dancing, tours, and so much nature. my personal favorite things were La Fortuna, a coffee tour, and a cooking class. The staff was also amazing and so fun and supportive, they were with us all the time ready to chat, teach, Crack jokes, and help if needed. I will treasure the memories forever and it was truly an amazing experience.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have explored on my own a bit more, or with a group. I mostly stuck to scheduled events as those were fun enough paired with classes and general fatigue from a new experience. But I would have loved to have done more, who knows what I would have found!
Pros
  • Controlled but lots of freedom, feels secure and safe but not restrictive
  • planned amazing events for all different kinds of people
  • amazing staff
Cons
  • At moments overwhelming, its a new place, and for me using spanish a lot was difficult at times

Costa Rica Study Abroad

My experience with this program was absolutely amazing. I felt confident about my trip despite never traveling abroad. The people I traveled with and those I met along the way were such kind people and really made my trip unique. Costa Rica is an amazing place and I will forever be grateful I had the opportunity to explore this country. I highly recommend this program for beginners or people interested in biology or ecology. If I had any advice, it would be to take it all in and live in the moment! Such an educational and fun opportunity!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I was super nervous about navigating airports and unfamiliar places without my family. I had a lot of anxiety about this trip but I took a leap and it was so worth it! The people I traveled with were very encouraging and Costa Rica was very accommodating to tourists and non-native spanish speakers. This trip really boosted my confidence in travel and myself.
Pros
  • educational
  • great environment
  • lots of activities
Cons
  • fast paced
  • not much rest time

Costa Rica Winter 2025

This has been my second time doing any study abroad with our program at California State University Fullerton. Through my experience with our clothes, I have the pleasure of having the opportunity of experiencing the whole culture of Costa Rica and was able to even participate in culture traditions. If it wasn’t for our program, I wouldn’t have been able to firsthand experience, a new culture and be a part of it. I was also able to learn firsthand experience when working at the school with children. The program gave me more hands-on experience and eight different output on other cultures and culture experiences.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was how nervous I was when working with our goals and in the program with children, but the funny part was that we were all doing it together, which was a great experience where I was able to also laugh and have fun
Pros
  • Experiencing something outside your comfort
  • Will always have a good time every day
  • We meet new friends
Cons
  • Strict policies, but they are not for safety reason
  • The program decides who you stay with

Integrating Spanish and Healthcare in Costa Rica

Integrating Spanish and healthcare in Costa Rica was a truly incredible experience. From delving into the culture to exploring the natural scenes of Costa Rica, I was able to become a more well rounded individual and gain a sense of appreciation for the unique opportunities Costa Rica has to offer. Aside from these experiences, I was able to improve my Spanish language skills exponentially while learning about the independence and native history of Costa Rica. This study abroad experience also allowed us to learn about healthcare in Costa Rica from visiting clinics to hospitals and speaking with healthcare providers. If given the opportunity to go on another trip using ARCOS Learning Abroad, I would go.

Arcos Costa Rica

A very well planned and executed program that expands understanding of the culture and language (especially) of Costa Rica. Living in a local family's home really helps move Spanish language learning forward fast, and eating the local food and seeing the daily lives of other people (outside the USA) is both humbling and encouraging. Great staff that clearly cares about us, and a collection of excursions around the countryside and with small businesses (coffee, chocolate, agriculture, etc.) really make it clear how differently Ticos view the same world we live in. Really an eye-opening journey!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Get ready to open your mind to the different ways people live each day, and the different things that consider important. Ex: living responsibly is more important than making a ton of money. The Tico new of life is much more about living well than living rich. Value is more important than wealth.
Pros
  • Language saturation really helps learning, which builds real confidence and opens new worlds.
  • The cultural parts of the program really displayed the joy in food and music that is so different than the USA.
  • The humility of these people is humbling.
Cons
  • I was ready for more independence (I'm older than most) but students' safety came first, so they take great care of the students.
  • The diet was different (healthier, I hesitate to admit) than I'm used to.
  • Rainy season in the summer, so not the becky, sunny scene I'd imagined earlier. My fault, of course.
