About Program
Water quality is rapidly emerging as one of the most pressing environmental concerns facing humanity, with clean freshwater central to global efforts in conservation, development, health, and economics. This 3-credit hybrid winter service-learning course in Ecuador explores the links between land use, water quality, and human health. Students study how farming, development, and land management practices affect freshwater systems; participate in community-based water quality monitoring; and learn how water-borne pathogens impact public health in rural communities. Designed for students in Global Health, biological sciences, public health, pre-med, and related fields, the course includes virtual classes from Dec. 21–23, followed by fieldwork in Ecuador from Jan. 3–17. Students from any U.S. university are welcome to apply, and the course is accredited through the University of Wisconsin.
