About Program

Learn Jacquard silk weaving and design at the Foundation Lisio in Florence, Italy. Explore fabric analysis and learn how to identify complex weave structures like brocade, damask, lampas, liseré, and velvet. On site, you will observe master silk weavers at their looms, engaged in the product design process. In this intensive studio program, Eva Basile (a Lisio faculty member) provides instruction in English, assisted by Barbara Setsu Pickett, the resident director and a UO professor of art. The studio experience is enriched with visits to museums and a textile conservation laboratory. Students earn nine quarter credit hours in upper division studio.

You will work in teams of two on class assignments. The original point-paper design and a small woven sample become part of the UO Fibers Area archive. Typically, you will be in studio from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Mondays through Thursdays.

This program is currently not being promoted on Go Overseas by its provider. Check with GEO Study Abroad for the most up-to-date information regarding the status of this program.

Fibers in Florence

The Fibers in Florence program was an amazing experience during which I not only learned a lot about Jacquard loom weaving and textile design, but was able to immerse myself in a different culture. Days spent in studio were hard but rewarding. We were pushed to analyze complex weave structures but also had time to experiment with repeat patterning and create our own woven designs. Overall I loved the 3 weeks spent in Florence and would definitely recommend the program to any art or design major looking to study abroad.

What would you improve about this program?
As far as the curriculum of the program goes, I wish there had been more time for feedback and critique on our patterns and designs themselves. I am happy with the way my work turned out, but feel I could have developed the patterns more with suggestions from others before jumping into weaving. Beyond that, I wish we had had more time to go out and explore Florence itself!
