The best experience

This Fellowship program was unique. I grow up as doctor, but also as a person. Bari is considered a small city. However, I think that is not. I could see the same surgery everyday so, I could learn about Porto and Il Pico. In the hospital: the placement of vascular accesses for ocological therapies. The central catheter methodo is very similar to hemodialysis, which was my main interest since I owrk as a nephrology resident doctor an I aspire to start my spelciaty degree as nephrologist next year in Bari

What was your funniest moment?
The cooking classes.

  • Learn about different culture.
  • Love more about medicine
  • Grow up
Cons
  • A few doctors speak english.

Really good experience

The experience with Doctors in Italy was really good. Everyone is so kind and willing to help with our needs.
Italy is an amazing country full of history and cultural experiences. I am so glad I chose this destination since I could enjoy all the food and culture as well as the experience at the hospital.
While at the hospital, the staff was great but I recommend knowing at least the basics of the italian language so there is a better understanding of the scenario. However, the doctors speak english so you are free to ask questions at any time.

Doctorsinitaly Fellowship program

The 2-week program that I attended in Milan, was very thoughtfully structured to meet every student’s requirements. Our choices and preferences were taken into consideration and we were placed accordingly in the Hospital department. The coordinators for the program , were super welcoming and took care of all our needs and made us feel very comfortable throughout our stay. Apart from our time in the Hospital, we had plenty of fun activities and travel organised for us( dinners, tour of Lake Como, Cooking class!)Overall would say that the experience I had with the Doctorsinitaly team has been Amazing, and I would gladly do it all over again!😊

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising or rather interesting thing I got to see/ observe were several surgical procedures in the operating theatre over the course of these two weeks. I was lucky to have been able to observe procedures in almost 5 different departments.
Where it came to doing something surprising rather different was attending the Cooking class( two different types of pastas and tiramisu for dessert! )organised for us on our last day. The feeling of being able to cook an entire meal was new experience for me and a very memorable one too:)
Pros
  • Exposure in temrs of culture
  • Unique opportunities at the hospital
  • Opportunity to experience healthcare in a different country whilst also being able to travel around
Cons
  • Language barrier( I personally felt that having some knowledge of Italian was essential for the trip)

Naples Trip

Overall, the experience was great, with a few areas that could be improved.

The academic aspect of the trip lacked organization. The program mentioned that doctors and professionals at the hospital would comprehend English, making it unnecessary to learn Italian. However, on multiple occasions, doctors spoke minimal English and were unable to fully understand my questions or explain parts of the procedures. Fortunately, I met several great nurses who spoke English and helped me communicate with the doctors and understand the procedures.

Another area for improvement is timing. During the first week, I was assigned to shadow the anesthesia department. Unfortunately, by the time I arrived at the operating room, the anesthesiologists had already completed most of their tasks and we were just monitoring the patient's status.

On a positive note, the tourism aspect of the program was excellent. Mario made Naples an unforgettable journey.

Pros
  • Internationalization of your medical, pre-medical experience
  • It expended my professional network
  • It was both education and vacation at the same time
Cons
  • Academic experience did not worth the money

Doctors in Italy experience

I loved my two week shadowing rotation in Rome with Doctors in Italy.
The hospital was very nice, with a lot of technology. I had the opportunity to be present in many types of surgeries such as cardiovascular bypass, mammoplasty, septumplasty, etc. Everything was very interesting and I learned a lot about the Italian healthcare system.
Accommodation was very nice, with a great location.
I recommend this experience a lot!
Academically and culturally very enriching.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would advise them to not be shy and to ask the questions or doubts they may have. Try to talk not only to the doctors or the surgeons but also to the nurses and the rest of the personnel they usually are more open if you show interest and you can learn a lot from them.

I would also advise them to immerse themselves in the Italian culture, one of the beautiful things about rotating in a different country is that you get to know the culture, the food, and the people. Italy is a beautiful country with a lot of history, art, and great food, so seize the opportunity to enrich yourself not only academically but also culturally.
Pros
  • Hospital experience
  • A lot of culture (art, history, food)
  • Excellent accomodation
Cons
  • Hospital is far from accomodation

Great shadowing and friends

My experience shadowing abroad in Bologna, Italy for 5 weeks was incredible. We got to see several different specialties such as dermatology, cardiology, oncology, etc. After shadowing for about six hours in the morning, we would go out to group meals or activities, like cooking classes, where we got to be fully immersed in the Italian culture. On Fridays, we went on group excursions outside of Bologna to other Italian cities like Ferrara, Modena, and Parma where we got to see different parts of Italy and learn even more. On the weekends, my other fellows and I would plan our own trips to different cities, such as Venice and Florence, and spend time having fun together. Overall, the experience not only helped me gain exposure to the medical field by allowing me to gain 100 clinical shadowing hours but also fostered lasting friendships and lifetime memories.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One of the most surprising things we did was climb the Asinelli Tower. It was about 500 steps up to the top of the tower which stands over 300 feet tall. The views at the top of the tower and the funny memories my group made were definitely worth the climb.
Pros
  • Clinical Shadowing Experience
  • Cultural Excursions
  • Great Fellows

Life-Changing Experience

Life-changing and unforgettable was my fellowship time in Ferrara. I got to roam around and take in the beauty of Italy in addition to shadowing at St. Anna Hospital in Ferrara. Both inside and outside the hospital, people were usually kind and entertaining. All things considered, it was enlightening as it enabled me to learn about Italian culture and history as well as identify the medical disciplines that most interested me. I shadowed in gynecology, neurology, surgery, cardiology and others! Would suggest without hesitation.

What was your funniest moment?
When we used to go dine each Monday and Wednesday with the fellows. Hands down the best nights of my life! Our supervisor Beatrice used to tell us stories over dinner that I will never forget.
Pros
  • Lovely city (Ferrara)
  • Amazing team
  • Interesting shadowing

The BEST summer experience!!

I absolutely adored my time in Genoa with Doctors in Italy. The city managers and accommodations were phenomenal! I even tested positive for asymptomatic COVID-19 upon arrival and the staff at Shadow Doctors in Italy and our hotel were so helpful and caring. They made sure that I was well taken care of and even reimbursed me for the meals I had delivered while in quarantine!
Our hotel was within a short walking distance of the bus we needed to take to the hospital each day and to the city's train station.
Each rotation we shadowed had at least one doctor who spoke English proficiently and was willing to take on and guide a student for the day. Because we had a smaller shadowing group, we were even able to choose what specialties we wished to shadow each day. Each rotation, I was met with friendly and helpful faces who were happy to meet us and teach us more about their work. I always felt welcome and accepted by all.
The city managers, Denise and Matteo, were so helpful! They showed us around the hospital as well as the city. We had such a great time with them, and they were always a phone call or text away if we needed them. Our group excursions with them on Wednesday and Friday nights were so fun!
After shadowing and on the weekends, we were free to travel on our own! We received great advice from Denise and Matteo on where to visit, shop, and eat. During my time in Italy, I was even able to travel to Rome for the weekend before returning to shadowing on Monday morning.
Overall, I miss my time in the Doctors in Italy program immensely, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in entering into the healthcare profession!

Pros
  • Amazing experience to add to your resume!
  • Great exposure to various healthcare specialties and the differences between the structure of US and Italian healthcare systems
  • Lots of free time to travel and explore a new country!
