About Program

The Kyoto five-week summer program employs a unique experiential learning process that involves learning in the landscape of Kyoto and its surrounding areas. You will visit numerous places that enrich and enlighten the classroom, empowering you to pursue your intellectual interests on a daily basis. Treks through rice terraces and guided walks of old Kyoto add to the active pedagogical format of this summer program. The design studio engages urban landscape design projects such as the restoration and transformation of historic districts, open space systems of canal waterways and promenades, downtown plazas, etc.

Kyoto is an ancient city with numerous challenges as it integrates a twenty-first century culture with an exquisite eighth century landscape context.

This program is currently not being promoted on Go Overseas by its provider. Check with GEO Study Abroad for the most up-to-date information regarding the status of this program.

Yes, I recommend this program

A beautiful encounter in Asia.

Living in a 14th century monastery is one of the most memorable traveling experience I have ever had. Immersing ourselves in the traditional Japanese lifestyle in Kyoto allowed us to experience Japanese architecture, garden, household, and culture first-handed. Through its architecture, we learned the importance of respecting shared spaces and an extremely community-centric society. It was such a privilege to be given the opportunity to engage myself in a culture with depth like Japan's.

Below is a blog I kept for this trip to hopefully provide a glimpse to this beautiful trip to Kyoto, Japan: http://landscapexkyoto.tumblr.com
