Best thing I’ve ever done

I originally made the decision to study abroad because I felt like I was living the same day on repeat. I anticipated this trip would make me more adaptable and I would get to experience different cultures. But it beyond exceeded my expectations; it forced me to grow as a person on so many different levels. We were immersed into so many different ways of living and outlooks on life. I have never been one to get “excited” or really invested into learning, but this trip completely shifted that for me. We learned about events, people, places, etc. and became experts on those topics. It’s one thing to hear about an event and its impact as a statistic, but being there, seeing how people live, and talking to those behind the numbers makes it feel real. Beyond the cultures we got to experience, the people I met along the way is what truly made this trip even more amazing. Almost of us knew each other before the trip, and we all clicked immediately. Everyone became like family after the first 24 hours. I have been home now for about a month and I have thought about the trip every day since. From this experience I’ve gained new perspectives on the world, but also lifelong friendships.

What was your funniest moment?
The funniest moment from the trip was when my friends and I were out shopping in Kyoto. It was raining all day and we were tired from walking all day so we decided to look for a massage place. We had gone to 4 different places, and none of them had room. This particular one that we got turned away from happened to be upstairs in this little alleyway, the stairs were slick… and one of my friends slipped for the 3rd time on the trip so far. Her pain wasn’t what was funny, but her reaction. After we made sure she was okay, we all started dying laughing (the boys even got teary eyed).
Pros
  • The hotels we stayed in were all amazing.
  • The academic work was engaging and also taught us about modern day events going on in the world.
  • The lifelong friendships.
Cons
  • Occasionally I felt like I didn’t have enough time to complete assignments, but it thought us how to operate under pressure.

My MEI experience

My 45 days with MEI have honestly been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I went into it exited to see new places, try new foods and meet new people which I did all of but most of all i've truly fallen in love with learning. I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to get a taste of travel but especially to those who have struggled with feeling passionate about school. This program has taught me so much about how capable I am of not only being able to keep up but also succeed when i'm outside of my comfort zone. Joe, Rita, and Zoe are also some of the loveliest and smartest people i've ever met and it has been such a pleasure to learn and get to know them. I have learned so much about myself, how I interact with others and how I do and want to interact with the world in my future. If your a teenager wanting to get out into the world and are ready for a challenge I 100% recommend looking into MEI !

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I wasn't expecting to get the chance to hold some super cool animals like two huge pythons and a giant bomb smelling rat!
Pros
  • sick views
  • teachers
  • self-growth
Cons
  • for shorter trips the adjustment period can feel long
  • you will be tired

Magnificent MEI Experience

This trip was not only the single best experience of my life to date but also a needed reminder of how amazing education can be. The way that MEI plans and designs the trip is otherworldly always making you feel structured and ready for the next adventure. The locations, teachers, students, assignments and activities are something you will never forget. My only advice for future students, stay on top of work, pack everything and more even if your bag is a little more uncomfortable moving around and make sure do everything and live it to the fullest. The curriculum and assignments are genuinely enjoyable and exciting, the teachers are more experienced and have more knowledge than you could ever imagine. If your a future student looking forward to an MEI abroad trip remember this, if you do the work, listen to lessons and connect to the studies it will change the way you view the program and this world. The books, media and content connect you to the culture of your travels like no other. If you’re ready to become a learner, a traveler and a powerful part of our world then look no further. Join MEI on their next trip to Asia or another corner of the globe. If you forget all else remember this, the world is our classroom, don’t be afraid to use it.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I were the do this trip all over again there would be a few smaller changes. Without a doubt I would read the books and watch the media many many times. Making sure to truly know all the content to a level where you can explain and teach it someone changes the way you experience this program. I would make sure the have all the content and information down and additionally make sure you have everything. Double, triple check you have everything you need and then add a little more. Cables, chargers, electrolytes, batteries, cleaning/hygiene product, clothes. Everything in some way or another becomes necessary even when you least expect it and that’s the beauty of MEI. Always learning, always on your toes and always ready for the next adventure.
Pros
  • The education is next level compared to any general public or private school on earth
  • You’re always finding new things, passions, cultures, places.
  • Entertainment, there are always incredibly fun things to do all around town, with the students, the teachers or maybe even with the locals.
Cons
  • The days are long and tiring but it’s all a part of the journey.
  • Early mornings some days, get ready to wake up for school on Saturday and Sunday!
  • The trip is too short, it flies bye and you wish you were out for a double the time.

Full year

This school completely transformed me in the best way possible. When I first went to MEI, I thought it would just be about traveling the world—seeing new places, experiencing different cultures, and getting a break from normal life. But once I was actually there, I realized it was so much more than that. It changed how I see everything. I wasn’t just moving from place to place like a tourist anymore—I was learning, paying attention, and actually understanding the people, history, and systems around me.

The experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to think differently. It made me more aware, more curious, and more independent. I started to see connections between places, cultures, and even my own life that I never would have noticed before. It wasn’t just about where I went, but how I experienced it.

Looking back, choosing to go to MEI was easily one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It gave me a completely new perspective on the world and on myself, and I know that mindset is something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
In Italy we went and say Michelangelo’s David statue. I can’t really describe why it was so amazing, it just was. It was perfection and was much more than just a statue.
Pros
  • Knowledge
  • Discipline
  • Perspective
