About Program

Explore Portugal’s approach to environmental justice and social equity, challenging conventional ideas about growth, technology, and sustainability. From Lisbon, study urban planning policies that provide equal access to parks, green spaces, and zero-carbon public transportation. Coursework uses a Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus lens to examine integrated resource management. Through site visits and volunteer opportunities, engage with organizations working on climate advocacy, food waste reduction, ocean pollution, and community support.

SIT's program in Portugal offers the choice to do a minor in global environmental studies or global sustainability studies. Through hands-on training in environmental assessment, bioeconomy research, and renewable energy technologies within the context of a just energy transition, you’ll explore different approaches to sustainability and environmental justice across mainland Portugal, the Azores Islands, and Spain’s Extremadura region.

Program Highlights

  • Experience life in Lisbon, where heritage meets innovation and progressive thinking.
  • Travel to Porto, Douro, the Azores, Alentejo, and Spain’s Extremadura region.

Yes, I recommend this program

Best abroad program ever!

This program is outstanding. You are taken care of in every way. The people were like minded and supportive. The independent study opportunity was meaningful and lovely. It is a great balance of fun and learning, with so much set up for you to succeed. There are three excursions imbedded into the program: the Azores, the south of Portugal and Spain, and the north of Portugal. They were definitely the highlight. Everything we did insured that it was the trip of a lifetime for each of us. It was a close knit group and we had so many chances to bond. I loved it!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
We saved an injured seagull and got constant updates on her recovery until she was reintroduced into the wild! It was so cool.
