Volunteer Veterinarian — Street Dog Surgery & Rabies Control, Hyderabad

Most veterinary volunteering abroad means holding a leg while someone else works. This is not that.

SAFI runs a working surgical clinic outside Hyderabad. From your first week, you'll be performing high-volume spay and neuter surgery on free-roaming dogs, alongside wound management, mange, tumors, tick-borne disease, road trauma and parvo cases. Our resident veterinarian works beside you.

You'll also learn how free-roaming dogs are assessed, caught and handled in the field. India carries roughly a third of the world's human rabies deaths. We've vaccinated over 6,000 street dogs, and you'll join those drives through the lanes of Bowrampet. Few veterinary schools anywhere teach street-dog capture and restraint.

All work is supervised by our Indian-registered veterinarian, and we confirm your scope in writing before you book flights.

You'll leave with a caseload log, a written reference, and clinical judgement a well-resourced practice cannot give you.
