Volunteer at a Special Needs school in Kenya with People and Places
About Program
Join People and Places as a volunteer in Kenya. This program supports Gede Special School, a boarding school for 130 disabled children from the ages of 5 to 19, located at the edge of Watumu National Marine Park. About 65% of the students are deaf; the rest suffer from multiple physical and mental disabilities such as cerebral palsy.
Children with disabilities in Kenya face more struggle than the average Kenyan or the average disabled person in a developed country. The children supported by Gede are often shunned by society and sometimes even their own parents. The school provides a happy environment for the children and also works with their families and the local community.
Depending on their skills and experience, volunteers help provide educational and/or health care support.
