What position do you hold at One Tree Africa? What has been your career path so far?

Hi, my name is Alice Wathika, co-founder and CEO of One Tree Africa Adventures. I have volunteered all my life and earliest memory was doing walks for ?Freedom from hunger walk? which benefited the less fortunate in Kenya when I was ten years. To date I have worked with projects that vary from conservation to sports training. With immense experience working with volunteers from all walks of life from around the world for ten years plus it has been and continue to be a great pleasure learning new cultures and customs.

Did you volunteer abroad? If so, where and what inspired you to go?

While I have not volunteered abroad I have done the same locally in Kenya and taken part in contributing to international fundraisers. An example is Syria where my contribution via Qaaf started a collection of sanitary towels which is now supported by UNICEF. Everyone wants a better life and being the helping hand that enables that has always seen me get up to help in whatever way I can. We are citizens of the world and being my brother's keeper is achieved by sparing even a minute to help someone cross the road.

What has been your favorite experience with volunteers or story shared with you by a volunteer?

I have so many tales to tell but one that stands out to date was the construction of a house for a lady called Kadzo. She had polio as a child which meant that she could no longer walk and she crawls everywhere she goes. Her house was made of torn nylon bags held loosely with sticks. The lack of a door and no wall meant anyone could walk in and this left her with more kids than she could ever manage to take care off. We built a two roomed house for her which really raised her moral while at the same time ensured she could now lock the door and no one could just walk in and take advantage of her.

What do you hope to see One Tree Africa accomplish over the next 10 years?

One Tree Africa Adventures looks at not only helping provide shelter and improving structures for the communities we work with but also ensuring the confidence of the people we interact with is improved. We want to open the eyes of our volunteers while at the same time making sure the communities are richer from the interactions. Everyone we interact with WILL gain from the experience. We want to be the to-go-to eco travel company!
