About Program

Volunteer with children in Kenya, teaching English, Creative Arts, Music, Swimming, Life Skills, or Sports.

In Kisumu, many children face limited access to quality education. Poverty and a lack of resources hinder potential. Better Me, a registered non-profit, supports local programs, like the Korando Educational Center, Kisumu Children Remand Home and Nyalenda Youngstars football club in the slums to change their story.

As a Better Me volunteer, you’ll directly impact these communities. You'll teach English to children, lead Creative Arts, Music, Swimming, Life Skills, and Physical Education activities. Your efforts will nurture abilities and confidence that last a lifetime.

You’ll work with different age groups while collaborating with local educators in Kisumu to create engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Our programs prioritize community engagement and local support.

Join the Better Me family and make a real difference in Kenya.

A Better World starts with a Better Me.

Program Highlights

  • We’re local: Our team lives and works in Kisumu. It’s their home and this work is close to their heart. Every volunteer fee and donation directly supports local people, schools, and community projects.
  • We’re ethical: No orphanage tourism. No staged photo ops. Just real, human connection and community-driven development.
  • We’re experienced: Since 2015, we’ve welcomed volunteers from 34 countries and built long-lasting partnerships with schools, organizations, government departments and local leaders.
  • We’re sustainable: Our programs continue with or without volunteers, ensuring lasting impact that’s rooted in the community, not in dependency.
  • We’re transformational: Our approach combines personal growth with real-world impact, because we believe a better world starts with a Better Me.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here. Learn more about how Better Me is promoting ethical volunteering.

Impact 🌎

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Better Me. Our programs are community-owned and Kenyan-led, built to flourish whether volunteers are present or not. This means projects don’t pause when a volunteer leaves—they continue to grow, guided by local expertise and long-term vision.
Every contribution—time, skills, or funds—feeds directly into lasting systems of education, empowerment, and opportunity. Rather than creating dependency, we strengthen schools, families, and community initiatives so that they remain resilient and self-sufficient for years to come.
We invest in local leadership and capacity building, ensuring that knowledge, skills, and decision-making stay where they belong: in the community. By combining personal transformation with responsible development, Better Me creates impact that endures—an approach where growth today becomes strength for tomorrow.
At Better Me we believe that true change begins within and grows outward. As a registered nonprofit rooted in Kisumu, Kenya, our work is led by local hearts and minds and shaped by the community we serve. Every volunteer experience and every euro of support flows directly into schools, families, and grassroots initiatives that make a lasting difference.
Our approach is built on respect and authenticity. We reject quick fixes, orphanage tourism, and staged photo opportunities. Instead, we cultivate real relationships and projects that continue to thrive whether volunteers are present or not. This ensures that the impact remains sustainable and never dependent on outside help.
Since 2015, people from more than thirty countries have joined us and discovered that volunteering can be both deeply personal and profoundly communal. They come to share skills and curiosity, and leave transformed—more connected, more aware, and more empowered to shape a better world.
Better Me isn’t about “fixing” Kenya. It’s about walking alongside the people who call it home, learning from their wisdom, and growing together. Through this exchange of hearts, cultures, and ideas, we create change that is ethical, enduring, and alive with possibility.

Program Impact

At Better Me, we believe that true change starts within—and grows outward into the community. By volunteering with us, you’ll help children and youth in Kisumu gain confidence, creativity, and essential life skills that open doors to a brighter future.

Our programs are designed to last: they continue with or without volunteers, ensuring sustainable impact rooted in the community. Every moment you spend—whether teaching English, leading arts and sports, or simply offering encouragement—contributes to long-term growth, both for the children and for yourself.

Together, we’re not just creating opportunities for today—we’re shaping a ripple effect of positive change that reaches far into the future.

Unforgettable time in Kenya with BetterMe

My time in Kenya was truly unforgettable. Caro and I came to Kenya with curiosity and a desire to work with children, and we leave the country with hearts full of memories, inspiration, and gratitude. From teaching and organizing activities to laughing with the children during swimming lessons, every day brought new experiences and emotions. The warm welcome from the team, the energy of the children, and the meaningful conversations we had will remain with us forever.

There was always someone to talk to, and you never felt alone. I learned a lot about the culture and the people, but I also heard some sad stories about the children. It was wonderful that they still brought so much joy to our everyday lives.

What was your funniest moment?
Basically nearly every moment witht the other volunteers!

My Family in Kenya

I spent 6 weeks with Better Me in 2017 and it was a wonderful experience - to learn, grow and share. At this time the organization was just at the beginning. I helped at the school and in the community. The children and organization became like a second family for me. I also met a lot of nice people in the community. With some of them I still am in contact. I visited the project several times since. It is always very welcoming and heartwarming. I cant wait to bring my daughter to Korando one day.

What was your funniest moment?
When i spontaneously got a ride on a camel on the school Court
Pros
  • Get to know a different culture authentically
  • Learn how to live hakuna matata in the best way
  • Bring Part of a multicultural family

February2023

I had a great experience staying with Better Me, it was an introduction to social work and the impact ngo's can have for local communities. There is a general positive energy. The experience also gave me a peek into Kenyan culture and customs, for example by adressing people with their last name, washing clothes, cooking with firewood... Faremost, the team members value volunteer safety while also allowing the freedom to explore the city by yourself. During both day and nighttime the team members make arrangements to enjoy the city of Kisumu while also keeping an eye for possible hazards to safety. This allowed me to make personal connections outside of the program for which i am forever grateful.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I loved the food in general, some new foods i was introduced to are chapati, ugali, dengu, matoke and the way of cooking eggs and meat also left an impression on my tastebuds.
Pros
  • Amazing team members
  • Safety
  • Introduces Kenyan culture
Cons
  • Transport

Better me= Second family

Travelling to Kenya with Better Me has truly been life-changing. I still remember stepping on the plane at 19, completely on my own, excited but also overwhelmed. Yet, from the very first moment, I never felt alone. At the airport and later at Korando, I was welcomed with such warmth by the team, the children, the volunteers, and basically by everyone I met. It instantly felt like I had arrived in a familiar place, even though I have never been here before.

During my first stay, I experienced more you could ever wish for as a volunteer: I was teaching in the Remand home, caring for babies at Mama Ngina, joining spontaneous hospital visits as a medical student, and spending time with the kids at Korando, whose kindness touched me deeply! Not to forget the countless activities in our freetime, such as Karaoke, sunrise hill walks, nature walks…. What stood out most was how Better Me makes everything personal. Nothing ever feels “too crazy” or “too much” – whatever your passion is, someone will stand beside you and make it possible, without judgment, only with encouragement.

Leaving after four weeks broke my heart. Back in Austria, not a single day passed without me thinking of Kenya. I never thought it was possible to miss a place – and the people in it – so intensely.

That’s why I returned in 2025 for six weeks, this time with three of my friends. Additionally, I had the chance to take a spontaneous trip to Tanzania – another adventure I wouldn’t have had without the people behind Better Me.

My friends and I did our medical internship at the Kisumu County Referral hospital, and once again Better Me took care of every detail. Even though this wasn’t part of the standard program, it was created just for us. That flexibility, that willingness to shape the experience around you, is what makes Better Me unlike anything else.

Saying goodbye again was just as hard.
Especially the children have carved a permanent place in my heart. I know I’ll return again and again, because Better Me isn’t just a program – it’s a home away from home. It’s a place where you are accepted for who you are. Where you are supported in becoming the best version of yourself.

For me, Better Me has been the best time of my life. It gifted me not only with unforgettable experiences and new friendships, but also with a second family. And that’s something I will carry with me forever.

To my second family: Asante sana!!!!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One of the things I couldn’t really imagine before coming to Kenya – and which turned out so different from anything I had known – was my time at the hospital. In Austria, we are used to a health system that provides almost everything without us even realizing how privileged that is. Seeing how healthcare works in Kenya was incredibly eye- opening, but at the same time sometimes deeply heartbreaking.

I realized how grateful we should feel for what we have – that our government cares for the sick, supports children, and ensures education in such a comprehensive way. In Kenya, there were moments that moved me to tears: listening to the painful stories of children, seeing how limited resources meant that some treatments – standard procedures at home – simply weren’t possible.

At the same time, I was deeply inspired by the mentality of the hospital staff. Despite all the barriers – financial hurdles, shortages of equipment and supplies – they kept going, always doing their best for the patients. I learned how much resilience, creativity, and multitasking it takes to be a doctor in such an environment. When the “first-best” option wasn’t available, they had to find a second-best solution and improvise, guided by their experience, courage, and compassion.

This experience has changed me profoundly. It made me more grateful for my own healthcare system in Austria and more aware of the challenges faced in other parts of the world. It also gave me a new sense of respect for the strength and dedication of the medical staff who work under such difficult conditions – and it reminded me why I chose to study medicine in the first place.
Pros
  • The individual program
  • Guidance at every step you make
  • The familiar environment
Cons
  • That I had to leave so soon.
  • That I had to leave so soon.
  • That I had tto leave so soon.

Review of Floor Gielis

I still think about my stay in Kisumu with BetterMe. As a volunteer, you get treated so well by the whole team. I think our help definitely makes a difference; you can help with money, time, our talents, kindness, and teaching skills.

I do think the organisation has to work a bit on its social media. The posts are not always up to date, and I feel like some pictures are taken/chosen without permission.

But overall, the organisation is doing amazing! Everybody really cares and also wants the volunteers to have an amazing time. I love what the organisation does, and I hope it can accomplish even more in the future.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I have multiple answers:
1. The huge avocados
2. The way some people treated the animals for example: chickens, cows or dogs was totally different
3. How open everyone is
Pros
  • Even your help might feel small, it’s so big.
  • You get to know about Kenia and the people.
  • You learn so much.
Cons
  • You never know if you will get along with the other volunteers.

The BEST thing you can do with your life

My experience with Better Me has been life changing. I have gone the past two summers and plan to continue returning because of how incredible it is. The people you meet here are so kind and supportive. The children are so beautiful and I am inspired by their courage. If you love working with children and traveling… THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO!!!! My favorite part of the whole experience is those little moments you have where you just feel so connected to the kids. Reading, swimming, and painting with them are just a few of the many ways that I developed such close bonds with the children here.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
This experience is what you make of it… If you put your heart into your lessons and experiences, you will get the most rewarding results. Cherish every day and don’t forget to smile!
Pros
  • Great people
  • Super fun
  • Teaching the most amazing children

Looking for a meaningful, learning oriented work experience? This is the place!

My time at Better Me was an incredible learning experience, both professionally and in personal terms.

On a professional level, the team was very open and supportive in taking into consideration my learning goals and assigned me tasks targeting my interests, which eventually shaped my present career in the humanitarian sector as a project coordinator. On a personal level, living in a stimulating environment, in a wonderfully welcoming community, and with an incredibly fun team, makes it still today, the best period in my life!! I would suggest this experience to someone who is flexible, wants to explore social work in the field, or is interested in how an NGO works. The strength of Better Me is that they have plenty of local partners who are always happy to have extra help; therefore, it's possible to work on a single project or multiple projects, depending on personal preferences and goals. Kenya and the city of Kisumu is also great places for a first experience abroad, the city is really safe, is not a huge overwhelming metropolis like Nairobi, but still offers fun, and any service one might need. However, one can still have a strong connection with the local community through activities on the field or simply by hanging out with the team. Lastly, I would suggest this experience to someone who is proactive. The magic in this organisation happens thanks to the synergy between the team and the volunteers, meaning that one has to be fully engaged and motivated to work hard and contribute to the projects, so don't expect people tell you all the time what to do. On the contrary, the more you engage yourself in the projects, the more you will take from the whole experience.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Once you arrive you quickly realise that your world is upside down, and everything feels like a hurdle, but especially the communication is a huge effort. I felt like nobody could understand me, what I needed or what we could do better. I was suddenly surrounded by locals, kids, elderly people, volunteers coming from every continent each with an immensely different culture than mine. Then I learned that communication means listening first, questioning my own way of socialising and communicating. It means patience, curiosity, and open mindedness.
Pros
  • Helps you explore your career preferences (on a task level)
  • Contact with the local community
  • You learn to live in harmony with your environment
Cons
  • Heat can be annoying
  • Food option can be limited
  • Intense for introverts

Life changing three and a half months in Kisumu, Kenia

Hey my name is Ben im 22 and from Munich in Germany,

I had one of my coolest and most interesting times in Kenia with BetterMe. I learned so much and really started to trust myself again ... this trip gave me the courage to dive into things without hesitation. It was grounding to see communities working together, and I loved exploring, stepping into different people’s surroundings, and playing football with BetterMe, Coach Billy and the boys from Kisian and Korando. The BetterMe team was super great ... every one of them has their own superpower. Also all of them are meaningful people that are willing to support you and also to help and guide you through everything. I’d recommend anyone who wants to see another part of the world and help out to volunteer with BetterMe. Big greetings from Munich, Germany.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
To not hesitate with anything and be curious about everything. There is so much to explore in Kisumu and also around Kisumu and Nairobi. Be open to the culture and try to have a free experience.
Pros
  • Grounding experience
  • Beautiful moments and people
  • Exploring a new ''world''
