About Program

The Lao Conservation Trust for Wildlife is the first wildlife rescue, conservation, and education center in Lao PDR. Lao PDR is a hotspot for the illegal wildlife trade in Southeast Asia. Due to the ongoing illegal wildlife trade, volunteers at LCTW make immediate and direct impacts to the wildlife here in Laos.

We currently care for a huge variety of species numbering over 200 animals including gibbons, crocodiles, bears, leopard cats, deer, turtles binturongs, and many others. Many of these have a high conservation value.

Volunteers work in supervised teams to provide daily care for our wildlife, and assist with various enrichment projects to ensure the mental health and wellbeing of the resident animals at our center. Larger projects such as building new enclosures for animals, renovating old enclosures, and general maintenance around the center are also ongoing.

Program Impact

In July 2024 we moved our entire site and all of our animals to a brand new site, based on the edge of the Phou Khao Khouay National Park. We only had 18 months to fine, secure, plan, build and move into this new site, which didn't even have roads, electricity or plumbing beforehand! This move means we have been able to design enclosures to the highest standard for the animals in our care, meaning we now have world class enclosures, to prepare our animals for release to the wild! The hurried nature of the move however, means the work never stops, and work is constantly underway to continue building new enclosures, and improve the existing ones to the highest standards. Volunteers are now immersed in nature during their stay with us, and have the unique opportunity to join us on releasing of animals into the national park wherever possible. You can be sure that your visit will make a lasting impact on the future of our center, and of wildlife in Laos - your help is needed now more than ever!

The best

I had the best experience at LCTW. The staff is very welcoming and fun to work with, their knowledge about wildlife is great and they are always eager to teach you new stuff about it.

The volunteer area is also very comfortable with everything you need at proximity of your bungalow. I had the best sleep there, it is very peaceful and you wake up to the gibbons calling! There also is a great resort 3 minutes away from the center where you can jump in the pool and eat good Lao food for free!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Hike in the jungle to make a bonfire while drinking beer and eating bamboo shoots.

Laos Dec-Jan 2024-25

The staff are so helpful and friendly. They work hard to accommodate the different work levels and personalities of the volunteers and included us in fun staff after hours events. There are a lot of different activities to assist with onsite and the staff are great at sharing information about the animals on and off site.

You can tell that everyone cares about the welfare of the animals, and the variety is wide. I love that they strive to release every animal possible. The clinic is great, and all the new developments are exciting.

AMAZING

LCTW is truly a place where you feel that you’re making a difference! They are releasing animals back into the wild constantly and the enclosures before that are massive, giving the animals the best chance for rehabilitation.

As a volunteer you’re involved and every day is different. The staff and fellow volunteers make the days fly by so fast. You get up close to the animals without touching them and are located in the jungle, making your time at LCTW an experience of a lifetime! Cannot recommend enough!

Awesome experience

This volunteer programme is excellent, I had the best time here. The volunteer co-ordinators are super friendly and you feel very at home straight away. The accommodation is really cute and it's amazing to listen to the Jackals at night and the Gibbons when you wake up in the morning. During the day you will be helping clean quarantine enclosures, creating enrichments for the animals and helping build new enclosures and renovate old ones. You can directly see how you are improving the lives of animals at the centre. Watching the bears enjoy fruit ice lollies which you have made them is amazing, it's such a satisfying feeling to see the animals enjoying life. The Vet's on site are awesome too, and are always happy to explain which animals they are treating currently and why if you are interested in the medical side of things. All the staff are so passionate and really care about the mission here. The centre is located in a rural town of Laos, you get to experience what life in Laos is really like, meet the locals and enjoy the easy-going lifestyle. You won't be disappointed.
