Our program requires a $20 donation to process your application. We suggest a donation of $180 USD per week ($600 USD per month) included housing in our Volunteer House, plus breakfast and lunch during work days at the Daycare or Preschool. Housing in the volunteer house includes a bed in a shared room, private bathrooms in each room, a fully-equipped kitchen, laundry, wifi, cable, drinking water, and housekeeping daily.

About Program

Welcome to Centro Infantil de los Angeles! We are a 501c(3) nonprofit providing free childcare and preschool education daily to low-income single mothers in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. Our services allow mothers and families to go to work and earn an income to provide for their children without having to worry about the cost or quality of childcare.

Our programs put kids on a path to long-term success by working with kids at critical development ages. We focus on preparing kids without means for primary school in terms of academics, social and emotional well-being, nutrition, and physical health. Our highly-integrated programs ensure kids are happy, healthy, and ready to take on the world.

Volunteers assist daycare teachers and preschool teachers with basic childcare and enrichment activities, working directly with children of different ages, feeding and changing them, engaging them in art projects and fun extracurricular classes, and assisting on field trips.

Go to Casa de los Angeles!

You will change lives . . . and YOURS will never be the same. The community of Casa de los Angeles is like a family, a family that includes the kids, moms, staff and volunteers. A great way to spend a week, a month or more. You won't be disappointed.

Questions & Answers

Are kids allowed to volunteer?

Yes, kids can volunteer. I think upper elementary school age (7+) would be best suited for the type of volunteer work at Centro Infantil de Los Angeles.

Why did you pick this program?

I picked Casa because I really believed it was a good program. I wanted to volunteer and I had studied Spanish in school, so I got to practice my Spanish skills as well!

What is the most important thing you learned abroad?

I became so much more independent while I was abroad. Going to classes and speaking to people in another language taught me to be more open to my surroundings and all the possibilities to meet new people. Make it your home and make an everyday life out of it, if you are staying for long time, that makes it more personal.

What do you tell your friends who are thinking about going abroad?

Just do it. Of cause it feels scary no matter how long of a time it is, but do it. I would recommend Casa to everyone who wants to have a good experience in Mexico, wants to know the culture, and have a good time!

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Prepare to be amazed and have an open mind! Go to Mexico and be a part of this community, stay open minded and explore the city of San Miguel, it's surroundings and the life in the center of San Miguel!

What is your favorite travel memory?

When I was a volunteer at Centro Infantil de Los Angeles in 2014, one of the teachers was getting married. She invited the volunteers to come. All of the volunteers were from different countries, and we had never been to a Mexican wedding. Our experience was amazing - there was dancing, Mariachi music, laughter, fireworks, and food!

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

It's easy to get caught up in your workload and all the things you have on your to-do list. Since being at Centro Infantil de Los Angeles, I've had to learn to take time to slow down and enjoy what's going on --- whether it's hanging out with the volunteers, helping the teachers, or playing the kids.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

Our returning volunteers are typically the ones who have built strong relationships with the children, their families, as well as the teachers. It's been amazing to witness these relationships form and continue to grow. One of our volunteers was asked to be the godmother of a student and will return next year for her confirmation!

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

One of the best things about our volunteer program is that you can come for as long as you want. Most volunteers come for a couple of months, but we've had people stay up to a year! I would encourage more volunteers to stay with us long-term. That way you can invest in the daycare and the San Miguel community, experience the culture, and learn the language.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

Centro Infantil de Los Angeles is a little family! The first time I volunteered here in 2014 I was amazed at how quickly I bonded with my housemates, and later, with the teachers and children. We spent time together doing Zumba, grocery shopping, learning to cook, going out, and exploring the city.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

There are a lot of factors in being successful, but for me, I think it's important to create an environment where people feel cared for, listened to, and respected. The care and respect we have for one another make teamwork possible, and it makes our organization run smoothly for everyone involved.
