Volunteer abroad with Love Volunteers in Morocco! Morocco is home to a unique mix of culture and history with both Arab and French influences. You are free explore Morocco during your free time on weekends and evenings. While you volunteer in Morocco you will also have the opportunity to enroll in language classes. Awesome Experiece for New Travellers

It was overall a good experience.Everything came together and was an excellent learning experience. It was challenging, but I wasn't looking for anythinv easy.

I recommend for someone who is brave and looking for a challenge. I learned a lot about myself and the county.

This trip wasn't about partying, but it was about learning.And I had a lot of flexibility with my plans. The coordinators were encouraging and made sure I enjoyed my experience.

What would you improve about this program?
I would have liked there to be more communication between myswlf and the coordinators, particularly Love Volunteers. I often had to waits days for a response. But, having said that, when I pushed for a response I did get it.

Volunteer in Morocco!

I spent this summer teaching English at a language center in Rabat, Morocco. It was the most meaningful summer I have ever had. The students I worked with were so bright and so eager to learn. The diverse range of ages and abilities present in the classes was a challenge. However, with a little creativity and flexibility, this was easily overcome. I was given so much freedom to create and carry out lessons. I quickly learned what worked and didn’t work, and was able to develop my personal skills on top of helping out the students. I enjoyed going to work everyday, because it was fun, engaging, and meaningful. It’s such an incredible feeling to be striving and working for positive change in a community – amongst so many hardworking and inspiring people who are doing the same. And to be embraced as a member within that community in return is even more of a blessing. Through the experiences I had and the relationships that were built, I was able to learn a lot about myself and to develop new skills that will help me in the future.

The home stay was a huge component of the program. It is such a quick and powerful way to be integrated into the community. You grow attached to your family and begin to realize that this is really a home away from home. The families are incredible – so friendly and open to embracing you as a part of their family. You learn about the local culture and customs as well as receive useful tips and advice for navigating life in Morocco. And Rabat, a small but lively capital, was a great place to live. Some of the city's highlights are its beaches, parks, cybercafes, traditional restaurants and several museums.

Love Volunteers was definitely the right choice for me. The placement was perfect, the prices affordable and the experience one that I will never forget. The staff at Love Volunteers was invaluable throughout the entire process – providing resources, support, and advice. I never felt unsafe or overwhelmed; in fact I couldn’t believe just how easy it was to adjust to such a completely new experience. I absolutely recommend volunteering in Morocco. It is a beautiful and open place – and you have many volunteer options to choose from. Be sure to participate in the community, be flexible and open, put passion and patience into your work, and of course, remember to have fun, make friends, and travel!

Why did you choose this program?

As a woman that grew up in Mexico I was witness to the inequalities between men and women in my society. These abuses often let me angry, frustrated and wishing that I could have an active role in stopping it.

The program in Morocco attracted me even more because no only was the organization working with women but with indigenous women that had even less opportunities and political voice in a country that is still prominently male dominated.

The idea that I was able to make a change and contribute to the world gave me motivation to take this opportunity.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Love Volunteers was a great mediator between me and my organization. They took care of contacting the NGO and arranging the accommodation in Rabat.

All of my questions were answered quickly and they made sure I had all the necessary information. The only thing I had to do for myself was find the flight and get medical insurance/vaccines.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

I think the most important thing is not to have expectations. Most of the time, things never go as we imagine and that leads to disappointment.

Being prepared for the idea that you might be working in an office and doing logistical work, rather than hands on work, is also helpful. If you are hesitant about volunteering abroad, don't be. It is one of the greatest, most profitable experiences one could ever have.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

A normal day consisted on going to my organization around 10 am and working at the office translating documents, organizing workshops or looking up information.

At 16:00 I would be out of the office and be able to wander around the city and grab a coffee, walk along the beach, or visit one of the many touristic sites in Rabat.

I would often meet friends as well and go out to explore the Medina and ruins near the city. In the evening I would go back to the volunteer house to meet with the rest of the volunteers, have dinner and talk for a while before going to bed.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it and/or how did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was without doubt the religious difference between Morocco and my own country. The media has spread stereotypes about Islam that have really affected the way we see Muslim countries and sometimes family members are not very encouraging.

However, once I was living there I found it ridiculous that it was my fear before coming. Once I started immersing myself in the culture and interacting with the people I realized that there was nothing to be afraid of and felt at home in a matter of days.

How is it for a woman to travel alone in Morocco?

This is one of the questions I was asked the most. I think that traveling as a woman in Morocco has its own challenges but at the same time was very empowering.

It is normal for men to cat call women walking on the streets and approach them with inappropriate comments and questions. It is not something to be afraid of, and the best thing to do is simply ignore them and keep doing your own thing. However, it can be a little scary for those of us who are not used to the attention.

On the other hand, being able to travel alone and be independent in a country where the society is mostly male dominant, can give a woman a lot of self confidence.
