About Program

We believe young people can change the world. So we run Nepal volunteering programs for young people to ignite their passion for change and equip them with the skills, networks and confidence to become leaders.

Nepal is the second poorest country in Asia with nearly one-quarter of the population living below the poverty line. In 2015, the country was hit by a devastating earthquake that mostly affected rural areas and destroyed much of vital infrastructure. On the Nepal program, you will support your peers to drive change for their communities. You'll work with local people suffering from the aftermath of the earthquake to improve their access to water and sanitation facilities.

Raleigh Expedition is an international volunteering program delivered by the youth-driven development charity, Raleigh International. Raleigh Expedition is one of the first UK programs to be accredited by the Gap Year Association (GYA) and recognized by TeenLife as a Top 15 Most Popular Gap Program.

Program Impact

We’re holding development projects to account using technology, developing the skills to run behaviour change campaigns and reducing the impact of climate change on communities most at risk. Youth-driven change is getting things done!

Join over 55,000 people from over 100 countries and become part of a global community dedicated to supporting youth-led action. Young people are continuing to take action in their own communities, from creating sustainable start-ups, to challenging gender inequality and calling for action on the climate emergency and human rights.

If we are going to finally defeat poverty and injustice, find sustainable ways to protect our planet and achieve the Global Goals, young people must be the ones taking the lead and driving the solutions. Read our impact report at: raleighinternational.org/our-work/our-impact

Raleigh Nepal

I was lucky enough to be able to take part in this program and I dare say, it’s life-changing. As a volunteer, I was able to spend 10 weeks in breathtaking locations, surrounded by snowy mountains and lush rainforests, taste incredible food, meet a multitude of interesting people, all while making a lasting difference within local disadvantaged communities. This program is an opportunity to explore a whole new culture, a whole new way of life in all of its authenticity, as life on expedition is led within local households. But what you bring to these communities is far greater: clean and functional water systems, hygiene education, world awareness, and the list goes on.
100% would recommend!

What would you improve about this program?
Although Raleigh was an exceptional experience, I would say that it could have all generally been a bit more relaxed in terms of safety measures that may sometimes have been a bit over the top!

Nepal 2019 10 Week Experience

This is by far the best decision I have made as a young adult! This program allowed me to meet others similar to me and make memories I will never forget. While it was challanging at times, for me more in a social aspect than physically, I enjoyed every part of the adventure especially interacting with people from such a diverse culture. I have made bonds with people from the country that I hope to maintain and built friendships with nepali volunteers I wish to visit In the future again :) Daisy

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My biggest advice would be to not feel like you always need to be a social butterfly as you will be part of a MASSIVE group of young adults and sometimes, it can feel quite pressurising to keep up with others.

Nepal 2019

This is an amazing opportunity to get into the heart of the poorer parts of Nepal and support the victims of the 2015 Earthquake as they re-build their communities. You are able to live and work in remote mountain villages educating, improving water supply and sanitation and experiencing the warmth and friendliness of the Nepalese people. You will be part of a young and enthusiastic team with shared goals as they spend 3 week phases in the villages around the Gorkha region, a couple of hours or so drive from the capital, Kathmandu. in addition to the local support you will also have the opportunity to trek through the Ruby Valley experiencing some of the most majestic mountain views in the world sharing your time with new friends. Your group will be led by your peers and you will sleep in local tea houses and community buildings in the remote mountain villages, many of which have no road access.
It will be a life changing experience and the opportunity to experience this style of adventure is unique. Support Raleigh and the Nepali people, you won't be disappointed.

What would you improve about this program?
This was a great opportunity. There are no frills, accommodation is basic and will require sharing, Food is plentiful but lacks variety and again is basic. Work is hard and tiring.
Your efforts will be significantly rewarded.

3 months in Nepal

I went out in 2017 January to volunteer with young people and develop their leadership skills as well as try working in a different environment to that which i am used to. I learned lots about the Nepali culture, cuisine, language and way of life. Living in a rural community for 6 weeks and trekking through the Ruby valley for 3 weeks are among the best experiences of my life.

In the community we worked alongside qualified masons and trainee masons to build earthquake resistant homes for the community. Who received the homes was decided within the community. I was lucky enough to develop a positive relationship with one of the recipients of a home. She and her family were also involved in the building and learning how to build an earthquake resistant home. Hopefully they will take this knowledge and the skills forward and help others build their own homes built to resist destruction from an earthquake.

Seeing the young people develop over the 3 months was wonderful too. Some arrived shy and under confident and as they left they had gained positive skills enabling them to find employment or increase their social circles. This could be anyone with the support Raleigh offers to all the volunteers.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Listen to the host country volunteers, they have a wealth of knowledge and information to share.

Such an amazing experience of living and working in a remote Nepalese village!

For our project we were based in a rural village which took 2 hours from the nearest road to walk there - it was one of the most remote places I have been and staying with local families in their homes was truly amazing. Despite the fact that we didn't share a common language we formed a close bond with our family as we got by on a mixture of Nepali and English words and a large amount of miming!

Being able to be part of the water and sanitation project which Raleigh was carrying out there was such a privilege. The village had limited access to water and the construction of a new water system meant that they had a more reliable source of water. The construction of new tap stands and toilets also meant better access to facilities in the village.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make the most of every day - it goes far too quickly!

Raleigh Expedition in Nepal

I had a gorgeous time in Nepal, living with a host family, trekking across amazing living landscapes and pushing myself every day. Appreciation and gratitude became a daily occurrence. I think about the experience regularly, miss all the great food and miss being able to appreciate living in such a meaningful way. It was all about people and the landscapes - focussing on the important things in life instead of the shallow day to day bits we get caught up in at home.

Being able to spend an elongated period of time in such a beautiful country surrounded by wonderful people (both volunteers and locals) was, for me, what made the experience so special. I only wish I could have been there longer, working on more projects - two/three months didn't feel like long enough for me!

I cannot recommend it enough. A wonderful organisation - it's nice to trust the company you work for truly has the best in mind. This is the real deal, not some shallow, voluntourism experience.

What would you improve about this program?
I would have loved some language preparation lessons as this was another skill that I found enhanced the experience with my host family.
