About Program

In Peru many species fall victim to illegal hunting, either for meat or to be sold into the Pet Trade. We rescue and rehabilitate animals that have been confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade. Where possible we will always try to release an animal back into the wild, however sadly this is not possible with all cases. As a result we also provide permanent homes to animals deemed unfit for release. We protect a large area of Rainforest and actively look to reforest areas previously lost to farming or logging.

As a volunteer you will be involved hands-on with the daily care of the animals. This involves preparing food, feeding, cleaning the cages, assisting with veterinary treatment and meeting any special care needs, for example giving milk/vitamins to orphaned baby monkeys. There are also lots of other activities to get involved in, such as creating enrichment for the animals, constructing enclosures, reforestation, planting trees, maintenance, or administration.

Amazing experience

During my internship I stayed in Esperanza Verde for 5 months. During my time there I learned so much about nature conservation, life in the jungle and animals.

For me the best part of the internship was the overall life in the jungle and the animals around. Seeing the monkeys doing their natural behaviours after a sweaty day of work brings a lot of satisfaction. Life in the jungle with all the other volunteers is a lot of fun like, swimming in the river or doing games at the end of the day.

Pros
  • The facilities
  • The purpose of the organization
  • The jungle experience

Simply Amazing

This is truly an amazing center that genuinely cares about all living creatures. I got to work hands on with animals in a beautiful rainforest environment, and I got to do it with some of the best people I've ever met. I loved everything about my experience here, from feeding birds and caring for monkeys to hiking through the forest and laughing around a fire with my fellow volunteers. Some days are harder than others, but every day is rewarding. If you love nature, if you love wildlife, if you want to disconnect and find yourself through service, this is the perfect place. I will never forget my time here!

Amazing Experience

I stayed with EV for about 3months and it was a truly amazing time, from working with the animals and working along side the other volunteers. I had little to no experience working with animals of this variety. But it was well worth my time and I learned so much from everyone at the there. Hopefully one day I will be able to visit the project again to see how it has grown. Don't hesitate just go for it. You will not regret you time here.

I wanna go back to the jungle

First of all Thank you so much for having me Esperanza! It was just an amazing time there! I mean you get to shower in waterfall every day. That alone is worth going! Living in the jungle in general is just the best experience, you basically see a new animal everyday.
Work can be hard, but it a good way. It's very very rewarding and thanks to olivia and douwe's knowledge and experience you get to learn so much about animal, the forrest and Peru/Southamerica. Also having no permanent internet connection first sounds bad, but it actually calms you down and makes you apreciate the jungle and the company of the other volonteers even more.
I can only recommend going and i really wanna come back :-)

The perfect place to volunteer

I have volunteered at many rescue centres and this is one of the best! I spent over 3 months at Esperanza Verde and was always learning new things. The family that run the centre are amazing and make sure everybody is safe and having a great time. Its amazing to see animals, that were previously kept in cages, in the wild carrying out their natural behaviours and being given a second chance at life. This is the perfect chance to help rescue wild animals and make a difference for them.
Overall I would recommend this place to all travellers! no experience necessary !

An unforgettable experience

My experience at Esperanza Verde was a mosaic of different experiences and discoveries.
Concerning wildlife, I was constantly exposed to a beautiful surrounding composed of a wide diversity of plant and animal species. I got to learn about the behavior, the diet and how the local animals interact with their ecosystem. The whole team as well as the activities allowed me to learn about different species that I had never seen before, or about which is the best way to protect these species (usually differently than most people think). Being at the center definitely helped me feel more comfortable around these wild species and to really understand the balance of human/animal cohabitation.
Apart from discovering the natural landscape I also lived there an amazing human experience. Meeting other volunteers and locals who are very open to new cultures and ideas was so enriching. I had an amazing time, with numerous interesting conversations and many good laughs.
As for the organization, I was amazed by how easy it all was. The team was always there to help me with any doubt and the trip was no problem at all. The place is very well equipped and your security is a priority at all times.
My experience there is something I will hardly forget; I learned, laughed, felt useful and met so many beautiful people and animals. I strongly recommend this center for anyone interested in the environment and who is just simply looking to help.
