About Program

Developing Solidarity works with community-based organizations in Puerto Rico coordinating costumized volunteer abroad, community and project-based service learning and alternative breaks programs for groups from schools, universities, churches and companies from the USA and around the world to support residents of low-income communities on the island.

We support self-managed, sustainable development projects located in urban, rural and coastal settings and focus on environmental stewardship, micro-enterprise development, youth development, cultural preservation and quality of life issues. Programs include field trips to important cultural and/or natural sites, basic Spanish, and afro-Puerto Rican dance and music, among other activities. Serve with us and get to know the beautiful tropical archipelago of Puerto Rico, only few hours by airplane from USA east coast. No passport needed if coming from the US.

Yes, I recommend this program

Great cultural experience in Puerto Rico!

If you are looking to engage with the Puerto Rican culture, learn Spanish and volunteer in a local community, this program is a great choice! Luis, the director of the program, coordinated everything for me (pickup, hostel, Spanish classes) and I learned a lot from him about Puerto Rican culture and history. He even showed me around Old San Juan. In addition, helping at the community center is a great way to learn more about sustainable development and the local culture of the town.
