About Program

We are a registered Non Profit Organization involved in education in a remote rural village in the Transkei, South Africa. We place volunteer teachers at surrounding schools to teach English to the local Xhosa students. Volunteer teachers do one-on-one reading with students as well as an hour of fun interactive English class using a textbook as a guideline but are free to be creative in the classroom.

Volunteers have lots of free time to explore the nearby pristine beaches and soak up the countryside. In exchange for bringing love and hope to the students, volunteers leave here having learnt about the fascinating Xhosa culture, unique to South Africa.

Exceptional teaching experience on the Wild Coast

Very rewarding teaching experience - enthusiastic, friendly and appreciative students! Conducted one on one tutoring and lead a class of grade 3 students after school. Flexibility to tailor the lesson plans and determine which students to tutor. Really feels like you're making a difference.

Was great to live within the community, join for mealtimes and participate in community events. My husband and I stayed in our own rondavel and enjoyed meals with Theo, Debby and the other volunteers. Theo is an exceptional cook!

Fantastic Way to Experience the Real Africa

Theo and Debby were wonderful hosts. The traditional rondavels we stayed in were lovely and the food Theo cooked was to die for.

I personally worked at the Soga primary school, but there are other options to choose from. The kids are incredible and very eager to learn from a native english speaker. If you enjoy a challenge and would like the ability to be flexible with your own lesson plans, this is the program for you.

A great place near the coast

We had a great experience in the community of Ngcizela in 2015, so much so that we chose to return again for a longer duration in 2016. There are a lot of different areas to be involved in between the schools and the education centre, it really is an incredible experience that you can tailor to your own goals or interests.
The location is incredible! Beautiful beaches are within walking distance and it is a very remote unique environment.
Since returning we have been working with the Qolora education centre to help develop sustainable programs in the community to help increase the performances of the local schools and help make more of an impact. The new programs in place this year will really start to benefit the schools and improve literacy.

What would you improve about this program?
Debby and Theo are very open and willing to try new ideas and take on advice, its great because the program benefits from all of the different backgrounds and areas of expertise the volunteers bring.
